Jonah chapter 1

Jonah flees from Jehovah

1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,
2 Arise and go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it; for her iniquity has come up before me.
3 And Jonah arose to flee from the presence of the LORD to Tarshish, and went down to Joppa, and found a ship sailing for Tarshish; and paying his fare, he entered it to go with them to Tarshish, far from the presence of the Lord.
4 But the LORD caused a great wind to arise on the sea, and there was such a great storm on the sea that it was thought the ship would break up.
5 And the sailors were afraid, and each one cried to his god; and they threw the belongings that were in the ship into the sea, to unload it of them. But Jonah had gone down into the ship and lay down to sleep.
6 And the master of the ship came to him and said, “What’s wrong with you, sleepyhead?” Arise, and cry to your God; perhaps he will have compassion on us, and we will not perish.
7 And each of them said to his companion, Come and let us cast lots, that we may know by whom this evil has come upon us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 Then they said to him, Tell us now why this evil has come upon us. What do you do, and where do you live? ¿How is your country, and you where town from?
9 And he said to them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.
10 And those men were greatly afraid, and said to him, Why have you done this? For they knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, for he had declared it to them.
11 And they said unto him, What shall we do with thee, that the sea may be still for us? Because the sea was getting rougher and rougher.
12 He answered them, Take me and throw me into the sea, and the sea will be still for you; because I know that this great storm has come upon you because of me.
13 And those men worked to bring the ship back to land; but they could not, because the sea became more and more violent against them.

14 Then they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee now, O LORD, that we may not perish for the life of this man, nor put innocent blood upon us; for you, Jehovah, have done as you willed.

15 And they took Jonah, and cast him into the sea; and the sea was stilled from its fury.
16 And those men feared the Lord with great fear, and offered sacrifice to the Lord, and made vows.
17 But the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah; And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah Chapter 2

Jonah's Prayer

1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish,
2 and said, I called upon the LORD in my distress, and he heard me; From the bosom of Sheol I cried, And you heard my voice.
3 You cast me into the deep, into the midst of the seas, And the flood surrounded me; All your ripples and waves passed over me.
4 Then I said, I am rejected from before your eyes; But I will still see your holy temple.
5 The waters surrounded me to my soul, the deep surrounded me; The seaweed got tangled around my head.
6 I went down to the foundations of the mountains; The earth has closed its doors on me forever; But you brought my life out of the grave, O Lord my God.
7 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you in your holy temple.
8 Those who follow illusory vanities abandon His mercy.
9 But I will offer sacrifices to you with a voice of praise; I will pay what I promised. Salvation is from Jehovah.
10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah on the ground.

Jonah Chapter 3

Nineveh repents

1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying,
2 Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim there the message that I will tell you.
3 And Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. And Nineveh was an extremely large city, three days’ journey away.
4 And Jonah began to enter the city, a day’s journey, and he preached, saying, Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed.
5 And the men of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.
6 And the news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his seat, took off his garment, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and announced in Nineveh, by command of the king and his nobles, saying: Men and animals, oxen and sheep, do not taste anything; Do not give them food, nor drink water;
8 But let men and animals cover themselves with sackcloth, and cry loudly to God; and let every man turn from his evil way, from the plunder that is in his hands.
9 Who knows whether God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, and we will not perish?
10 And God saw what they did, that they turned from their evil way; and he repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

Jonah Chapter 4

Jonah's anger

1 But Jonah was extremely grieved and angry.
2 And he prayed to the LORD and said, Now, O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my land? Therefore I hastened to flee to Tarshish; because I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, and of great mercy, and that you repent of evil.
3 Now therefore, O Lord, I pray thee, take my life; because death is better to me than life.
4 And the LORD said to him, Are you doing well to be so angry?
5 And Jonah left the city, and camped toward the east of the city, and made himself a tent there, and sat under it in the shade, until he saw what would happen in the city.
6 And the LORD God prepared a gourd, which grew over Jonah to cast a shade over his head, and to save him from his trouble; and Jonah was greatly rejoiced over the gourd.
7 But when dawn came the next day, God prepared a worm, which smote the gourd, and it withered.
8 And it came to pass, as the sun rose, that God prepared a strong east wind, and the sun struck Jonah on the head, and he fainted, and desired death, saying, Death would be better for me than life.
9 Then God said to Jonah, Are you so angry because of the pumpkin? And he answered: I am very angry, even to death.
10 And the LORD said, You were sorry for the gourd, for which you did not work, nor did you make it grow; that in the space of one night he was born, and in the space of another night he perished.
11 And shall I not have mercy on Nineveh, that great city where there are more than one hundred and twenty thousand people who do not know how to discern between their right hand and his left hand, and many animals?
