Exodus 1-20

Exodus Chapter 1

Affliction of the Israelites in Egypt

1 These are the names of the children of Israel who entered Egypt with Jacob; each one entered with his family:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin,
4 Dan, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 All the people born to Jacob were seventy. And Joseph was in Egypt.
6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.
7 And the children of Israel were fruitful and multiplied, and were greatly increased and strengthened, and the land was filled with them.
8 Meanwhile, a new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph; and he said to his people:
9 Behold, the people of the children of Israel are greater and stronger than us.
10 Now therefore let us be wise toward him, lest he multiply, and it come to pass that when war comes, he also joins with our enemies and fights against us, and departs from the land.
11 Then they placed tax commissioners over them to bother them with their burdens; and they built for Pharaoh the storage cities, Pithon and Rameses.
12 But the more they oppressed them, the more they multiplied and grew, so that the Egyptians feared the children of Israel.
13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve harshly,
14 and made their lives bitter with harsh servitude, in making clay and brick, and in all work in the field and in all their service, to which they forced them with rigor.
15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrew women, one of whom was named Shiphra, and another Puah, and said to them:
16 When you assist the Hebrew women in their births, and you see the sex, if it is a son, kill him ; and if it is a daughter, then live.
17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but kept the children alive.

18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, Why have you done this, that you have preserved the life of the children?

19 And the midwives answered Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptians; for they are strong, and give birth before the midwife comes to them.
20 And God did good to the midwives; and the people multiplied and became greatly strengthened.
21 And because the midwives feared God, he prospered their families.
22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, Throw every son that is born into the river, and preserve the life of every daughter.

Exodus Chapter 2

Birth of Moses

1 A man of the family of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi to wife,
2 and she conceived and gave birth to a son; And seeing that he was beautiful, he hid him for three months.
3 But not being able to hide him any longer, he took a reed box and caulked it with asphalt and pitch, and placed the child in it and placed him in a reed bed on the bank of the river.
4 And one of his sisters stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
5 And Pharaoh’s daughter went down to wash in the river, and as her maids were walking along the bank of the river, she saw the casket in the reedbed, and sent one of her maids to take it.
6 And when she opened it, she saw the child; and behold, the child was crying. And having compassion on him, she said, This is one of the children of the Hebrews.
7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse this child for you?”
8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said, Go. Then the damsel went and called the child’s mother,
9 to whom Pharaoh’s daughter said, Take this child and raise it for me, and I will repay you. And the woman took the child and nursed him.
10 And when the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him, and named him Moses, saying, Because I drew him out of the water.

Moses flees Egypt

11 In those days it happened that Moses, when he was grown, went out to his brothers, and saw them at their hard work, and he observed an Egyptian beating one of the Hebrews, his brothers.
12 Then he looked everywhere, and seeing that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews quarreling; Then he said to the one who mistreated the other: Why do you hit your neighbor?
14 And he said, Who has made you prince and judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian? Then Moses was afraid, and said, Surely this has been discovered.
15 When Pharaoh heard about this fact, he sought to kill Moses; but Moses fled from Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian.

16 And as he sat by the well, seven daughters of the priest of Midian came to draw water to fill the basins and to water their father’s sheep.
17 But the shepherds came and drove them out from there; Then Moses arose and defended them, and watered his sheep.
18 And they returned to his father Reuel, and he said to them, Why have you come so soon today?
19 They answered: An Egyptian man defended us from the hand of the shepherds, and he also drew water for us and watered the sheep.

20 And he said to his daughters, Where is he? Why have you left that man? Call him to eat.
21 And Moses agreed to live with that man; and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses as a wife.
22 And she bore him a son; and he called him Gershom, for he said, I am a stranger in a strange land.
23 And it came to pass after many days that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and cried out; and their cry went up to God because of their slavery.
24 And God heard their groaning, and remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
25 And God looked at the children of Israel, and God recognized them.

Exodus Chapter 3

Call of Moses

1 As Moses was feeding the sheep of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, he led the sheep through the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
2 And the Angel of Jehovah appeared to him in a flame of fire in the midst of a bush; and he looked, and saw that the bush was burning with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
3 Then Moses said, I will go now and see this great vision, why the bush does not burn.
4 When Jehovah saw that he was going to see, God called him out of the middle of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses! And he answered: Here I am.
5 And he said, Come not near; Take off your shoes from your feet, for the place where you are is holy ground.
6 And he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses covered his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
7 Then Jehovah said: I have well seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their attackers; for I have known their troubles,
8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them out of that land to a good and wide land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the places of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, of the Perizzite, of the Hivite, and of the Jebusite.
9 Therefore the cry of the children of Israel has come before me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.
10 Come therefore now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.
11 Then Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?
12 And he said, Go, for I will be with you; and this will be a sign to you that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain.
13 Moses said to God, Behold, I come to the children of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you. If they ask me: What is your name? What will I answer?
14 And God answered Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And he said, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: I AM sent me to you.
15 Furthermore God said to Moses: Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever; with him I will be remembered for all centuries.
16 Go and assemble the elders of Israel, and say to them: Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying: Truly I have visited you, and I have seen what you have seen. ago in Egypt;

14 photo

17 and I have said, I will bring you out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey.
18 And they will hear your voice; and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, The Lord God of the Hebrews has found us; Therefore, we will now go three days’ journey through the desert, to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.
19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go except by a strong hand.
20 But I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all my wonders that I will do in it, and then it will let you go.
21 And I will give this people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, so that when you go out, you will not go empty-handed;
22 But each woman shall ask her neighbor and her guest for jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold, and clothing, which you shall put on your sons and your daughters; and you will despoil Egypt.

Exodus Chapter 4

1 Then Moses answered and said, Behold, they will not believe me, neither will they hear my voice; for they will say, Jehovah has not appeared to you.
2 And Jehovah said, What is this that you have in your hand? And he answered: A rod.
3 He said to him: Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a snake; and Moses fled from her.
4 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Stretch out your hand and take it by the tail. And he stretched out his hand, and took it, and it became a rod in his hand.
5 Therefore they will believe that Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.
6 And Jehovah said to him, Now put your hand into your bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom; and when he brought it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow.
7 And he said, Put your hand again into your bosom. And he put his hand again into his bosom; and when he took it out of the bosom again, behold, it had become like other flesh.
8 If it happens that they do not believe you or obey the voice of the first sign, they will believe the voice of the last sign.
9 And if they still do not believe these two signs, nor listen to your voice, you will take some of the water of the river and pour it on the ground; and those waters that you will take from the river will be changed and will become blood on the earth.
10 Then Moses said to Jehovah, “Alas, Lord! I have never been a man of easy speech, neither before, nor since you spoke to your servant; because I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.
11 And Jehovah said unto him, Who gave man a mouth? Or who made the mute and the deaf, the seeing and the blind? Am I not Jehovah?
12 Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth, and I will teach you what you shall speak.
13 And he said, Alas, Lord! Send, I pray you, through him who must send.
14 Then Jehovah was angry with Moses, and said, Do I not know your brother Aaron the Levite, and that he speaks well? And behold, he will come out to meet you, and when he sees you he will rejoice in his heart.
15 You shall speak to him, and put his words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his, and I will teach you what you shall do.
16 And he will speak for you to the people; He will be to you instead of a mouth, and you will be to him instead of God.
17 And you will take this staff in your hand, with which you will do signs.

Moses returns to Egypt

18 So Moses went away, and returning to his father-in-law Jethro, he said to him, I will go now and return to my brothers who are in Egypt, to see if they are still alive. And Jethro said to Moses: Go in peace.
19 Jehovah also said to Moses in Midian, Go and return to Egypt, for all those who sought your death are dead.
20 Then Moses took his wife and his children, and put them on a donkey, and returned to the land of Egypt. Moses also took the staff of God in his hand

21 And Jehovah said to Moses, When you return to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders that I have put in your hand; but I will harden his heart, so that he will not let the people go.
22 And you shall say to Pharaoh, Thus says Jehovah: Israel is my son, my firstborn.
23 I have already told you to let my son go, so that he may serve me, but you have not wanted to let him go; Behold, I am going to kill your son, your firstborn.
24 And it came to pass on the way, that Jehovah met him at an inn, and wanted to kill him.
25 Then Zipporah took a sharp flint and cut off the foreskin of her son, and threw it at her feet, saying, Truly you are a blood husband to me.
26 So she immediately let him go. And she said, Husband of blood, because of circumcision.
27 And Jehovah said to Aaron, Go meet Moses in the wilderness. And he went and found him on the mountain of God, and kissed him.
28 Then Moses told Aaron all the words of Jehovah that he had sent him, and all the signs that he had given him.
29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel.
30 And Aaron spoke about all the things that Jehovah had said to Moses, and he did the signs before the eyes of the people.
31 And the people believed; And hearing that Jehovah had visited the children of Israel, and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed down and worshiped.

Exodus Chapter 5

Moses and Aaron before Pharaoh

1 Then Moses and Aaron entered into the presence of Pharaoh and said to him, Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: Let my people go to celebrate me a feast in the wilderness.
2 And Pharaoh said, Who is Jehovah, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know Jehovah, nor will I let Israel go.
3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews has found us; So now we will go three days’ journey through the wilderness and offer sacrifices to Jehovah our God, so that he will not come upon us with pestilence or with sword.
4 Then the king of Egypt said to them, Moses and Aaron, why do you make the people stop from their work? Go back to your tasks.
5 Pharaoh also said: Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them cease from their tasks.
6 And Pharaoh commanded that same day to the men of the people who had charge of him, and to his foremen, saying:
7 From now on you will not give straw to the people to make brick, as until now; Let them go and gather the chaff for themselves.
8 And you will impose on them the same task of brickwork that they did before, and you will not diminish anything from them; Because they are idle, therefore they raise their voices saying, Let us go and offer sacrifices to our God.
9 Let the bondage be heavy upon them, so that they may be engaged in it, and not listen to lying words.
10 And the men of the people and their overseers went out and spoke to the people, saying, Thus says Pharaoh: I will not give you straw.
11 Go yourselves and gather the chaff where you find it; but nothing will be diminished from your task.
12 Then the people spread throughout the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.
13 And the crewmen urged them, saying: Finish your work, each day’s task in its day, as when you were given straw.
14 And they flogged the foremen of the children of Israel whom Pharaoh’s servants had placed over them, saying, Why have you not completed your work of brick yesterday or today, as before?
15 And the overseers of the children of Israel came to Pharaoh and complained to him, saying, Why do you do this to your servants?
16 Your servants are not given straw, and yet they tell us: Make the brick. And behold, your servants are scourged, and your people are guilty.
17 And he said, You are idle, yes, idle, and therefore you say, Let us go and offer sacrifices to Jehovah.
18 Go therefore now and work. You will not be given straw, and you must deliver the same brick task.

19 Then the overseers of the children of Israel were distressed, when it was said to them, “Nothing will be diminished from your brick, from your daily work.”
20 And finding Moses and Aaron, who were in their sight as they went out from the presence of Pharaoh,
21 they said to them, Let Jehovah look upon you, and judge; for you have made us abominable before Pharaoh and his servants, putting the sword in their hands to kill us.

Jehovah commissions Moses and Aaron

22 Then Moses turned to Jehovah and said, Lord, why do you afflict this people? What did you send me for?
23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak to him in your name, he has afflicted this people; and you have not delivered your people.

Exodus Chapter 6

1 Jehovah said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will let them go, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.
2 God spoke again to Moses, and said to him, I am JEHOVAH.
3 And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as Almighty God, but in my name JEHOVAH I did not make myself known to them.
4 I also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they were strangers, and in which they dwelt.
5 Likewise I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians make serve, and I have remembered my covenant.
6 Therefore you shall say to the children of Israel, I am JEHOVAH; and I will bring you out from under the heavy labors of Egypt, and I will deliver you from its bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments;
7 and I will take you as my people and will be your God; and you will know that I am Jehovah your God, who brought you out from under the heavy tasks of Egypt.
8 And I will bring you into the land for which I raised my hand, swearing that I would give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it to you as an inheritance. I JEHOVAH.
9 Thus spoke Moses to the children of Israel; but they did not listen to Moses because of the anguish of spirit and the hard slavery.
10 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
11 Go in and speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go from his land.
12 And Moses answered before Jehovah, Behold, the children of Israel will not listen to me; How then will Pharaoh listen to me, since I am dull of lips?
13 Then Jehovah spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them a commandment for the children of Israel, and for Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
14 These are the heads of his fathers’ families: The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Phalu, Hezron and Carmi; These are Rubén’s families.
15 The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Saul the son of a Canaanite woman. These are the families of Simeon.
16 These are the names of the sons of Levi according to their families: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari. And the years of Levi’s life were one hundred and thirty-seven years.
17 The sons of Gershom: Libni and Shimei, by their families.
18 And the sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. And the years of Kohath’s life were one hundred and thirty-three years.
19 And the sons of Merari: Mahli and Musi. These are the families of Levi by his lineages.
20 And Amram took his aunt Jochebed to wife, and she bore Aaron and Moses. And the years of Amram’s life were one hundred and thirty-seven years.
21 The sons of Izhar: Korah, Nepheg and Zicri.
22 And the sons of Uzziel: Mishael, Elzaphan and Shitri.

23 And Aaron took to wife Elizabeth the daughter of Amminadab, sister of Nahshon; which she gave birth to Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
24 The sons of Korah: Asir, Elkanah and Abijah. These are the families of the Chorites.
25 And Eleazar son of Aaron took for himself a wife from the daughters of Phutiel, and she bore him Phinehas. And these are the heads of the fathers of the Levites by their families.
26 This is that Aaron and that Moses, to whom the LORD said, Bring out the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.
27 These are they who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt. Moses and Aaron were these.
28 When Jehovah spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt,
29 then Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, I am Jehovah; Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all the things that I say to you.
30 And Moses answered before Jehovah, Behold, I am dull of lips; How then can Pharaoh hear me?

Exodus Chapter 7

1 Jehovah said to Moses, See, I have made you a god to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.
2 You shall say all that I command you, and Aaron your brother shall speak to Pharaoh, so that he may let the children of Israel go from his land.
3 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and I will multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.
4 And Pharaoh will not hear you; but I will lay my hand on Egypt, and I will bring out my armies, my people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt, with great judgments.
5 And the Egyptians will know that I am Jehovah, when he stretches out my hand on Egypt and brings out the children of Israel from among them.
6 And Moses and Aaron did as Jehovah commanded them; so they did it.
7 Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Aaron's rod

8Jehovah spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
9 If Pharaoh answers you, saying, Show a miracle; You shall say to Aaron, Take your rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, that it may become a snake.
10 So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh and did as the Lord had commanded. And Aaron cast his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a snake.
11 Then Pharaoh also called wise men and sorcerers, and the sorcerers of Egypt also did the same with their enchantments;
12 So each one threw down his staff, and they became snakes; but Aaron’s rod devoured their rods.
13 And Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.

The plague of blood

14 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Pharaoh’s heart is hardened, and he will not let the people go.
15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning, behold, he goes out to the river; and you stand on the shore before him, and take in your hand the rod that became a snake,
16 and say to him,Jehovah God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, Let my people go, that they may serve me. in the desert; and behold, until now you have not wanted to hear.
17 Thus says Jehovah: By this you will know that I am Jehovah: behold, I will strike the water that is in the river with the rod that is in my hand, and it will become blood.
18 And the fish that are in the river will die, and the river will stink, and the Egyptians will be disgusted to drink the water of the river.

19 And Jehovah said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Take your rod, and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over its rivers, over its streams, and over its pools, and over all its reservoirs of water, that they may become blood, and let there be blood throughout all the region of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.

20 And Moses and Aaron did as Jehovah commanded; And lifting up his rod he struck the waters that were in the river in the presence of Pharaoh and his servants; and all the water that was in the river became blood.
21 Likewise the fish that were in the river died; and the river became corrupt, so much so that the Egyptians could not drink from it. And there was blood throughout the land of Egypt.
22 And the sorcerers of Egypt did the same with their enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them; as Jehovah had said.
23 And Pharaoh turned and went to his house, and he paid no attention to this either.
24 And throughout Egypt they made wells around the river for drinking, because they could not drink the waters of the river.
25 And seven days were fulfilled after Jehovah struck the river.

Exodus Chapter 8

The plague of frogs

1 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Go into the presence of Pharaoh and say to him, Thus says Jehovah: Let my people go, that they may serve me.
2 And if you do not want to let him go, behold, I will punish all your territories with frogs.
3 And the river will breed frogs, which will come up and enter your house, into the chamber where you sleep, and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants, into your people, into your ovens and into your troughs.
4 And the frogs will come up on you, on your people, and on all your servants.
5 And Jehovah said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, streams, and pools, that I may cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.
6 Then Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.
7 And the sorcerers did the same with their enchantments, and caused frogs to come upon the land of Egypt.
8 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said to them, Pray to Jehovah that he may take away the frogs from me and from my people, and I will let your people go, that they may offer sacrifices to Jehovah.
9 And Moses said to Pharaoh: Please tell me when I should pray for you, for your servants, and for your people, so that the frogs may be removed from you and from your houses, and that they will only remain in the river.
10 And he said, Tomorrow. And Moses said, It will be done according to your word, so that you may know that there is no one like Jehovah our God.
11 And the frogs will leave you, and your houses, your servants, and your people, and will remain only in the river.
12 Then Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh. And Moses cried to the Lord concerning the frogs which he had sent to Pharaoh.
13 And Jehovah did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died in the houses, in the farms, and in the fields.
14 And they gathered them in heaps, and the land stank.
15 But when Pharaoh saw that they had given him rest, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, as Jehovah had said.

The plague of lice

16 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch out your rod and strike the dust of the ground, so that it may become lice throughout the land of Egypt.
17 And they did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the ground, and it became lice, both on man and beast; All the dust of the land became lice throughout the land of Egypt.
18 And the sorcerers also did so, to remove lice with their enchantments; but they could not. And there were lice on both men and beasts.
19 Then the sorcerers said to Pharaoh, This is the finger of God. But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as Jehovah had said.

The plague of flies

20Jehovah said to Moses, Get up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh, behold, he comes out to the river; and say to him, Thus says the Lord: Let my people go, that they may serve me.
21 For if you do not let my people go, behold, I will send all kinds of flies on you, on your servants, on your people, and on your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians will be filled with all kinds of flies, and also the land where they are.
22 And on that day I will separate the land of Goshen, where my people live, so that there will be no flies in it, so that you may know that I am Jehovah in the midst of the land.
23 And I will put redemption between my people and yours. Tomorrow will be this sign.
24 And Jehovah did so, and all kinds of very annoying flies came upon the house of Pharaoh, upon the houses of his servants, and upon all the land of Egypt; and the earth was corrupted because of them.
25 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said to them, Go, offer sacrifice to your God in the land.
26 And Moses said, It is not fitting for us to do so, for we would offer to Jehovah our God the abomination of the Egyptians. Behold, if we sacrificed the abomination of the Egyptians before them, would they not stone us?
27 We will go three days’ journey through the desert, and we will offer sacrifices to Jehovah our God, as he will tell us.
28 Pharaoh said, I will let you go so that you may offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, provided you go no further; pray for me.
29 And Moses said, Behold, when I go out from thy presence, I will pray to Jehovah that the various kinds of flies may depart from Pharaoh, and from his servants, and from his people in the morning of him; provided that Pharaoh does not fail again, not letting the people go to sacrifice to Jehovah.
30 Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord.
31 And Jehovah did according to the word of Moses, and removed all those flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, without one remaining.
32 But Pharaoh hardened his heart even this time, and he would not let the people go.

Exodus Chapter 9

The plague on livestock

1 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Go into the presence of Pharaoh and say to him, Thus says Jehovah, the God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
2 For if you do not want to let him go, and you still detain him,
3 behold, the hand of Jehovah will be on your cattle that are in the field, horses, donkeys, camels, cows and sheep, with a very serious plague.
4 And Jehovah will separate the livestock of Israel from the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing of all the children of Israel will die.
5 And Jehovah appointed a time, saying, Tomorrow Jehovah will do this thing in the land.
6 The next day Jehovah did this, and all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the cattle of the children of Israel not one died.
7 Then Pharaoh sent, and behold, of the cattle of the children of Israel not one had died. But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not let the people go.

The plague of ulcers

8 And Jehovah said to Moses and Aaron, Take handfuls of ashes from a furnace, and Moses will scatter them toward heaven before Pharaoh;
9 and it will become dust over all the land of Egypt, and will cause boils and ulcers on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.
10 And they took ashes from the furnace, and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered them toward heaven; and there was a rash that produced ulcers on both men and beasts.
11 And the sorcerers could not stand before Moses because of the rash, for there was a rash on the sorcerers and on all the Egyptians.
12 But Jehovah hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not listen to them, as  Jehovah had spoken to Moses.

The Hail Plague

13 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Get up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh, and say to him, Thus says Jehovah, the God of the Hebrews: Let my people go, that they may serve me.
14 For this time I will send all my plagues on your heart, on your servants and on your people, so that you may understand that there is no one like me in all the earth.
15 For now I will stretch out my hand to strike you and your people with a plague, and you will be removed from the land.
16 And indeed I have appointed you to show my power in you, and that my name may be announced in all the earth.
17 Are you still arrogant against my people, so as not to let them go?
18 Behold, tomorrow at this time I will cause it to rain very heavy hail, such as has never been in Egypt, from the day it was founded until now.
19 So send to gather your livestock, and all that you have in the field; for every man or animal that is found in the field, and is not brought home, the hail will fall on him, and he will die.
20 Of Pharaoh’s servants, he who feared the word of Jehovah caused his servants and his livestock to flee home;
21 But whoever did not put the word of Jehovah in his heart, he left his servants and his livestock in the field.
22 And Jehovah said to Moses, Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that hail may come throughout the land of Egypt, upon man, and upon beast, and upon all the grass of the field in the land of Egypt.

23 And Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and Jehovah made it thunder and hail, and the fire came upon the earth; and Jehovah rained hail upon the land of Egypt.
24 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so great as never was in all the land of Egypt since it was inhabited.
25 And that hail struck throughout the land of Egypt everything that was in the field, both man and beast; Likewise the hail destroyed all the grass in the field, and broke down all the trees in the country.
26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail.
27 Then Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, I have sinned this time; The Lord is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.
28 Pray to Jehovah that the thunder of God and the hail may cease, and I will let you go, and you will stop no more.
29 And Moses answered him, As soon as I leave the city, I will stretch out my hands to Jehovah, and the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail; so that you may know that the earth belongs to the Lord.
30 But I know that neither you nor your servants will yet fear the presence of Jehovah God.
31 So the flax and the barley were destroyed, because the barley was already in the grain, and the flax in reeds.
32 But the wheat and rye were not destroyed, because they were late.
33 And Moses went out from the presence of Pharaoh, outside the city, and he stretched out his hands to Jehovah, and the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain fell no more on the earth.
34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain had ceased, and the hail, and the thunder, he persisted in sinning, and he and his servants hardened their hearts.
35 And Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not let the children of Israel go, as Jehovah had said through Moses.

Exodus Chapter 10

The locust plague

1 Jehovah said to Moses: Enter into the presence of Pharaoh; for I have hardened his heart, and the hearts of his servants, to show these my signs among them,
2 and that you may tell your children and your grandsons the things that I did in Egypt, and my signs that I did among them; so that you may know that I am Jehovah.
3 Then Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh and said to him, Thus says Jehovah God of the Hebrews: How long will you not humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.
4 And if you still refuse to let him go, behold, tomorrow I will bring the locusts upon your territory,
5 which will cover the face of the earth, so that the earth cannot be seen; and she will eat what escaped, what is left of you from the hail; She will also eat every tree that bears fruit for you in the field.
6 And it will fill your houses, and the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians, such as your fathers and grandfathers never saw, since they were on the earth until this day. And she turned and went out from before Pharaoh.
7 Then Pharaoh’s servants said to him, How long will this man be a snare to us? Let these men go, that they may serve Jehovah his God. Don’t you still know that Egypt is already destroyed?
8 And Moses and Aaron were called again before Pharaoh, and he said unto them, Go, serve Jehovah your God. Who are the ones who have to go?
9 Moses answered: We must go with our children and with our old men, with our sons and with our daughters; We must go with our sheep and with our cows; because it is our solemn feast to Jehovah.
10 And he said to them, So be Jehovah with you! How can I let you and your children go? Look how the evil is in front of your face!
11 It will not be so; Go now, you men, and serve Jehovah, for this is what you asked. And they drove them out of Pharaoh’s presence.
12 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt to bring in the locusts, so that they may come up on the land of Egypt and consume all that the hail left behind.
13 And Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and Jehovah brought an east wind over the land all that day and all that night; and when morning came the east wind brought the locusts.
14 And the locusts came up over all the land of Egypt, and settled in all the land of Egypt in such great numbers as had never been before or ever will be after;
15 and he covered the face of the whole country, and darkened the land; and he consumed all the grass of the land, and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left; There was nothing green left on the trees or on the grass of the field in all the land of Egypt.
16 Then Pharaoh hastened to call Moses and Aaron, and said, I have sinned against Jehovah your God, and against you.
17 But I beg you now to forgive my sin just this once, and to pray to Jehovah your God to remove at least this deadly plague from me.
18 And Moses went out from before Pharaoh, and prayed to Jehovah.

19 Then Jehovah brought a very strong west wind, and removed the locusts and threw them into the Red Sea; Not a single locust was left in all the land of Egypt.
20 But Jehovah hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.

The plague of darkness

21 Jehovah said to Moses: Stretch out your hand toward heaven, so that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, so much so that anyone can feel it.
22 And Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was darkness over all the land of Egypt for three days.
23 No one saw his neighbor, nor did anyone leave his place in three days; but all the children of Israel had light in their rooms.
24 Then Pharaoh called for Moses, and said, Go, serve Jehovah; only your sheep and your herds remain; Let your children also go with you.
25 And Moses said, You also will give us sacrifices and burnt offerings to offer to the Lord our God.
26 Our cattle will also go with us; not a single hoof will remain; for we must take of them to serve Jehovah our God, and we do not know with what we are to serve Jehovah until we get there.
27 But Jehovah hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go.
28 And Pharaoh said to him, Depart from me; Be careful that you see my face no more, because on any day that you see my face, you will die.
29 And Moses answered, You have said well; I will not see your face again.

Exodus Chapter 11

Death of first-born children announced

1 Jehovah said to Moses, “I will bring another plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt, after which he will let you go from here; and he will surely drive you out of here altogether.
2 Now speak to the people, and let each one ask his neighbor, and each one from his neighbor, jewelry of silver and gold.
3 And Jehovah gave favor to the people in the sight of the Egyptians. Moses was also considered a great man in the land of Egypt, in the eyes of Pharaoh’s servants, and in the eyes of the people.
4 So Moses said, Thus says Jehovah: At midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt,
5 and every firstborn in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the servant who is behind the mill, and all the firstborn of the beasts.
6 And there will be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as never was, nor ever will be.
7 But against all the children of Israel, from man to beast, not a dog will move his tongue, so that you may know that Jehovah makes a difference between the Egyptians and the Israelites.
8 And all these your servants will come down to me, and bow down before me and say, Go, you and all the people who are under you; and after this I will go out. And he left Pharaoh very angry.
9 And Jehovah said to Moses, Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that my wonders may multiply in the land of Egypt.
10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh; for Jehovah had hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not send the children of Israel out of his country.

Exodus Chapter 12

Easter

1 Jehovah spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
2 This month will be the beginning of months for you; For you this will be the first in the months of the year.
3 Speak to the whole congregation of Israel, saying: On the tenth of this month let everyone take a lamb according to the families of their fathers, one lamb per family.
4 But if the family is so small that it is not enough to eat the lamb, then he and his immediate neighbor to his house will take one according to the number of the people; According to each man’s eating, you shall count the lamb.
5 The animal will be without defect, a male one year old; you will take it from the sheep or from the goats.
6 And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, and the whole congregation of the people of Israel shall sacrifice it between the two evenings.
7 And they will take some of the blood, and put it on the two posts and on the lintel of the houses where they will eat it.
8 And that night they will eat meat roasted in the fire, and unleavened bread; They will eat it with bitter herbs.
9 You shall not eat anything of it raw, nor cooked in water, but roasted with fire; his head with his feet and his entrails.
10 You shall leave nothing of it until the morning; and whatever remains until morning you will burn in the fire.
11 And you will eat it like this: with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you will eat it hastily; It is Jehovah’s Passover.
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and I will execute my judgments on all the gods of Egypt. I am Jehovah.
13 And the blood will be a sign for you in the houses where you are; and I will see the blood and will pass over you, and there will be no plague of mortality among you when I strike the land of Egypt.
14 And this day will be a memorial to you, and you will celebrate it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; by a perpetual statute you will celebrate it.
15 Seven days you will eat unleavened bread; and so on the first day you will ensure that there is no leaven in your houses; for whoever eats leavened from the first day to the seventh will be cut off from Israel.
16 On the first day there will be a holy convocation, and likewise on the seventh day you will have a holy convocation; No work will be done in them, except only that you prepare what each one will eat.
17 And you shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; Therefore you will keep this commandment in your generations by perpetual custom.
18In the first month you will eat unleavened bread, from the fourteenth day of the month in the evening until the twenty-first day of the month in the evening.
19 For seven days no leaven will be found in your houses; For whoever eats leavened food, whether a foreigner or a native of the country, will be cut off from the congregation of Israel.
20 You shall not eat anything leavened; In all your rooms you will eat unleavened bread.
21 And Moses called together all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Bring forth and take lambs for your families, and sacrifice the passover.
22 And take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that will be in a basin, and anoint the lintel and the two posts with the blood that will be in the basin; and none of you go out from the doors of his house until the morning.
23 For Jehovah will strike the Egyptians; and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two posts, Jehovah will pass through that door, and he will not let the wounder enter your houses to strike.
24 You shall keep this as a statute for yourselves and for your children forever.
25 And when you enter the land that Jehovah will give you, as he promised, you will keep this ritual.
26 And when your children say to you, “What is this ritual of yours ?
, and freed our houses. Then the people bowed and worshiped.
28 And the children of Israel went and did so punctually, as  Jehovah had commanded Moses and Aaron.

Death of firstborns

29 And it came to pass at midnight that Jehovah struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in prison, and all the firstborn of the animals.
30 And that night Pharaoh arose, he and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, because there was no house where there was not a dead person.
31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said to them, Come out from among my people, you and the children of Israel, and go, serve Jehovah, as you have said.
32 Take also your sheep and your herds, as you have said, and go; and bless me too.
33 And the Egyptians urged the people, making haste to drive them out of the land; because they said: We are all dead.
34 And the people carried their dough before it was leavened, their dough wrapped in their sheets on their shoulders.
35 And the children of Israel did according to the commandment of Moses, asking of the Egyptians jewelry of silver, and of gold, and clothing.
36 And jehovah gave favor to the people before the Egyptians, and they gave them whatever they asked for; thus they plundered the Egyptians.

The Israelites leave Egypt

37 The children of Israel set out from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, not counting the children.
38 Also went up with them a great multitude of all kinds of people, and sheep, and many cattle.
39 And they baked unleavened cakes from the dough they had brought out of Egypt, because it had not risen, because when the Egyptians had driven them out, they had not even had time to prepare food.
40 The time that the children of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years.
41 And after four hundred and thirty years, on the same day all the hosts of Jehovah left the land of Egypt.
42 It is a night of observance for Jehovah, because he brought them out of the land of Egypt. This night must be kept for Jehovah by all the children of Israel throughout their generations.
43 And Jehovah said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover; no stranger will eat of it.
44 But every human servant bought with money shall eat of it, after you have circumcised him.
45 The foreigner and the hired servant shall not eat of it.
46 It shall be eaten in a house, and you shall not carry any of that meat outside of it, nor break any of its bones.
47 The entire congregation of Israel will do it.
48 But if any foreigner dwells with you, and wishes to keep the Passover to the Lord, let every male be circumcised, and then he will keep it, and he will be like one of your nation; but no uncircumcised man shall eat of it.
49 The same law will be for the native, and for the foreigner who lives among you.
50 All the children of Israel did so; As Jehovah commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.
51 And on that same day Jehovah brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by his armies.

Exodus Chapter 13

Consecration of the firstborn

1 Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
2 Consecrate to me every firstborn. Whoever opens a womb among the children of Israel, both man and beast, is mine.
3 And Moses said to the people: Remember this day, on which you came out of Egypt, from the house of bondage, for Jehovah has brought you out from here with a strong hand; therefore you shall not eat leavened.
4 You are going out today in the month of Abib.
5 And when Jehovah has brought you into the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land dripping with milk and honey, you shall celebrate this celebration in this month.
6 Seven days you will eat unleavened bread, and the seventh day will be a festival to Jehovah.
7 For seven days unleavened bread will be eaten, and nothing leavened or leavened will be seen with you in all your territory.
8 And you shall tell it on that day to your son, saying, This is done because of what the Lord did to me when he brought me out of Egypt.
9 And it shall be as a sign upon your hand, and as a memorial before your eyes, that the law of Jehovah may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand Jehovah brought you out of Egypt.
10 Therefore you will keep this ritual in its season from year to year.
11 And when Jehovah has brought you into the land of the Canaanite, as he has sworn to you and your fathers, and when he has given it to you,
12 you shall dedicate to Jehovah everyone who opens the womb, and also every firstborn of your animals; the males will be Jehovah’s.
13 But every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you do not redeem him, you will break his neck. And you shall redeem the firstborn of your sons.
14 And when your son asks you tomorrow, saying, “What is this?”
15 And Pharaoh being hardened to not let us go, Jehovah put to death in the land of Egypt every firstborn, from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of the beast; and for this cause I sacrifice to Jehovah every firstborn male, and I redeem the firstborn of my sons.
16 Therefore it will be a sign upon your hand and a memorial before your eyes, because Jehovah brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand.

The column of cloud and fire

17 And after Pharaoh let the people go, God did not take them by the way of the land of the Philistines, which was near; for God said: Lest the people repent when they see war, and return to Egypt.
18 But God made the people go around by the way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up from Egypt armed.
19 Moses also took with him the bones of Joseph, who had sworn to the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and you will bring up my bones from here with you.
20 And they left Sukkot and camped at Etham, at the entrance to the wilderness.
21 And Jehovah went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to guide them on the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they might walk by day and by night.
22 The pillar of cloud never departed from before the people by day, nor the pillar of fire by night.

Exodus Chapter 14

The Israelites cross the Red Sea

1 Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying:
2 Tell the children of Israel to turn and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea toward Baal-zephon; Before him you will camp by the sea.
3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel: They are shut up in the land, the wilderness has shut them up.
4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will follow them; and I will be glorified in Pharaoh and in all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Jehovah. And they did so.
5 And it was told to the king of Egypt that the people were fleeing; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants turned against the people, and they said, How have we done this, that we have let Israel go, that they should not serve us?
6 And he yoked his chariot, and took his people with him;
7 and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and the captains over them.
8 And Jehovah hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he followed the children of Israel; but the children of Israel had come out with a mighty hand.
9 So the Egyptians followed them, with all of Pharaoh’s cavalry and chariots, his horsemen, and all of his army, and overtook them encamped by the sea, next to Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon.
10 And when Pharaoh had come near, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians came after them; Therefore the children of Israel feared greatly, and cried unto Jehovah.
11 And they said to Moses, Were there no graves in Egypt, that you have taken us out to die in the wilderness? Why have you done this to us, that you have brought us out of Egypt?
12 Is this not what we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, Let us serve the Egyptians? Because it would be better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die ourselves in the desert.
13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not; stand firm, and see the salvation that Jehovah will do for you today; because the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see again forever.
14 Jehovah will fight for you, and you will be at ease.
15 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Why do you cry to me? Tell the children of Israel to go.
16 And lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it, and let the children of Israel enter into the midst of the sea on dry land.
17 And behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will follow them; and I will glorify myself in Pharaoh and in all his army, in his chariots and in his horsemen;
18 And the Egyptians will know that I am Jehovah, when I glorify myself in Pharaoh, in his chariots, and in his horsemen.
19 And the angel of God, who was going before the camp of Israel, turned aside and followed them; and likewise the pillar of cloud that went before them moved away and stood behind them,
20 and went between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, and it gave light to Israel by night, and throughout that night they never came near one another.
21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Jehovah caused the sea to recede by a strong east wind all that night; and the sea became dry, and the waters were divided.

22 Then the children of Israel entered into the midst of the sea on dry ground, with the waters as a wall on their right and on their left.

23 And the Egyptians followed them, and entered after them to the middle of the sea, all of Pharaoh’s cavalry, his chariots, and his horsemen.
24 It came to pass in the morning watch, that Jehovah looked upon the camp of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and cloud, and overturned the camp of the Egyptians,
25 and removed the wheels of their chariots, and overturned them severely. Then the Egyptians said, Let us flee from before Israel, for Jehovah fights for them against the Egyptians.
26 And Jehovah said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may return upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their cavalry.
27 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and when it was dawn, the sea returned in all its strength, and the Egyptians fled and met the sea; and Jehovah struck down the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots and the cavalry, and all the army of Pharaoh that had entered after them into the sea; Not one of them remained.
29 And the children of Israel went through the midst of the sea on dry ground, with the waters as a wall on their right and on their left.
30 Thus Jehovah saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.
31 And Israel saw that great deed that Jehovah did against the Egyptians; and the people feared Jehovah, and believed in Jehovah and in Moses his servant.

Exodus Chapter 15

Song of Moses and Mary

1 Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to Jehovah, and said, I will sing to Jehovah, for he has greatly magnified himself; He has thrown the horse and the rider into the sea.
2 Jehovah is my strength and my song, and he has been my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him; God of my father, and I will exalt him.
3 Jehovah is a man of war; Jehovah is his name.
4 He cast Pharaoh’s chariots and his army into the sea; And his chosen captains were sunk in the Red Sea.
5 The abysses covered them; They descended to the depths like a stone.
6 Your right hand, O Jehovah, has been magnified in power; Your right hand, O Jehovah, has broken the enemy.
7 And by the greatness of your power you have struck down those who rose up against you. You sent your anger; He consumed them like stubble.
8 At the breath of your breath the waters gathered; The currents gathered together as in a heap; The deeps were congealed in the sea.
9 The enemy said: I will pursue, I will capture, I will divide the spoil; My soul will be satisfied with them; I will draw my sword, my hand will destroy them.
10 You blew with your wind; the sea covered them; They sank like lead in the mighty waters.
11 Who is like you, O Jehovah, among the gods? Who is like you, magnificent in holiness, Terrible in wonderful deeds, worker of wonders?
12 You stretched out your right hand; The earth swallowed them.
13 You led this people that you redeemed in your mercy; You took him with your power to your holy abode.
14 The people will hear it and tremble; The land of the Philistines will take pain.
15 Then the leaders of Edom will be troubled; The mighty men of Moab will be overcome with trembling; All the inhabitants of Canaan will be dismayed.
16 Let trembling and fear fall upon them; To the greatness of your arm be silent like a stone; Until your people have passed away, O Jehovah, Until this people that you rescued have passed away.
17 You shall bring them in and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, In the place of your dwelling, which you have prepared, O Jehovah, In the sanctuary which your hands, O Jehovah, have established.
18 Jehovah will reign forever and ever.
19 For Pharaoh rode with his chariots and his horsemen into the sea, and Jehovah turned the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel passed through the midst of the sea on dry land.
20 And Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dancing.
21 And Mary answered them: Sing to Jehovah, for he has become extremely great; He has thrown the horse and the rider into the sea. The bitter water of Mara

The bitter water of Mara

22 And Moses made Israel leave the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; And they walked three days in the desert without finding water.
23 And they came to Marah, and could not drink the waters of Marah, because they were bitter; That’s why they named her Mary.
24 Then the people murmured against Moses, and said, What shall we drink?
25 And Moses cried to Jehovah, and Jehovah showed him a tree; and he cast it into the waters, and the waters became sweet. There he gave them statutes and ordinances, and there he tested them;
26 And he said, If you will carefully listen to the voice of Jehovah your God, and do what is right in his sight, and give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will not bring any of the diseases that I brought upon the Egyptians to you; for I am Jehovah your healer.
27 And they came to Elim, where there were twelve fountains of water, and seventy palm trees; and they camped there by the water.

Exodus Chapter 16

God gives the manna

1 Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel departed from Elim, and came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they left the land of Egypt.
2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness;
3 And the children of Israel said to them, If only we had died by the hand of Jehovah in the land of Egypt, when we sat at the pots of meat, when we ate bread to our fill; for you have brought us out into this desert to starve all this multitude.
4 And Jehovah said to Moses, Behold, I will rain bread for you from heaven; and the people will go out and gather a day’s portion daily, so that I may test them whether they walk in my law or not.
5 But on the sixth day they will prepare to store twice as much as they usually gather each day.
6 Then Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, In the evening you will know that Jehovah has brought you out of the land of Egypt,
7 and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord; for he has heard your murmurings against Jehovah; For what are we that you should murmur against us?
8 Moses also said: Jehovah will give you meat to eat in the evening, and bread in the morning to fill you; for Jehovah has heard your murmurings with which you have murmured against him; because we, what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against Jehovah.
9 And Moses said to Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near to the presence of the Lord, for he has heard your murmurings.
10 And Aaron spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of Jehovah appeared in the cloud.
11 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel; Speak to them, saying: In the evening you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be satisfied with bread, and you will know that I am Jehovah your God.
13 And when evening came, quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning dew fell around the camp.
14 And when the dew ceased to descend, behold, on the face of the desert, a small, round thing, small as frost on the earth.
15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, What is this? because they didn’t know what it was. Then Moses said to them: It is the bread that Jehovah gives you to eat.
16 This is what Jehovah has commanded: Gather from it each one according to what he can eat; an omer per head, according to the number of your people, you shall take each one for those who are in his tent.
17And the children of Israel did so; and they gathered some more, some less;
18 And they measured it by omer, and he who had gathered much had no surplus, nor was he who had gathered little lacking; Each one gathered according to what he had to eat.
19 And Moses said to them, Let no one leave any of it until tomorrow.
20 But they did not obey Moses, but some left it for another day, and he bred worms, and there was a stink; and Moses was angry with them.
21 And they gathered it every morning, each one according to what he had to eat; and after the sun got hot, it melted.

22 On the sixth day they collected a double portion of food, two omeres for each; and all the princes of the congregation came and told Moses.
23 And he said to them, This is what Jehovah has said: Tomorrow is the holy day of rest, the holy rest of Jehovah; What you have to cook, cook it today, and what you have to cook, cook it; and whatever you have left, save it for tomorrow.
24 And they kept him until the morning, according to what Moses had commanded, and he did not have any worms, nor did he stink.
25 And Moses said, Eat it today, for today is the Sabbath of the Lord; today you will not find in the field.
26 Six days you will gather it; but the seventh day is a day of rest; It will not be found in it.
27 And it came to pass that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, and found nothing.
28 And Jehovah said to Moses, How long will you not keep my commandments and my laws?
29 Behold, Jehovah gave you the Sabbath, and therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Let everyone therefore remain in his place, and let no one go out of him on the seventh day.
30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 And the house of Israel called it Manna; and it was like coriander seed, white, and its taste was like flakes with honey.
32 And Moses said, This is what the Lord has commanded: Fill an omer with it, and keep it for your descendants, so that they may see the bread that I gave you to eat in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.
33 And Moses said to Aaron, Take a vessel, and put in it an omer of manna, and set it before Jehovah, that it may be kept for your descendants.
34 And Aaron set it before the Testimony to keep it, as Jehovah commanded Moses.
35 So the children of Israel ate manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; They ate manna until they reached the borders of the land of Canaan.
36 And an omer is a tenth of an ephah.

Exodus Chapter 17

Rock water

1 The whole congregation of the children of Israel set out from the wilderness of Sin on their journeys, according to the commandment of Jehovah, and camped at Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 And the people quarreled with Moses, and said, Give us water to drink. And Moses said to them: Why do you argue with me? Why do you test Jehovah?
3 So the people were thirsty there, and murmured against Moses, and said, Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4 Then Moses cried unto Jehovah, saying, What shall I do to this people? In a little while they will stone me.
5 And Jehovah said to Moses, Go ahead of the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go.
6 Behold, I will be before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you will strike the rock, and water will come out of it, and the people will drink. And Moses did so in the presence of the elders of Israel.
7 And he called the name of that place Massah and Meribah, because of the strife of the children of Israel, and because they tempted Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah then among us or not?

War with Amalek

8 Then Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim.
9 And Moses said to Joshua, Choose men, and go out to fight against Amalek; Tomorrow I will be on the top of the hill, and the staff of God in my hand.
10 And Joshua did as Moses told him, fighting against Amalek; and Moses and Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11 And it came to pass, that when Moses lifted up his hand, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.
12 And Moses’ hands grew weary; so they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur held their hands, one on one side and the other on the other; Thus there was firmness in his hands until the sun set.

13 And Joshua destroyed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 And the LORD said to Moses, Write this as a memorial in a book, and tell Joshua that I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.
15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi;
16 and said, Because the hand of Amalek was lifted up against the throne of Jehovah, Jehovah will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Jethro visits Moses

1 Jethro the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard all that God had done to Moses and to Israel his people, and how Jehovah had brought Israel out of Egypt.
2 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her,
3 and her two sons; one was called Gershom, for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land;
4 and the other was called Eliezer, for he said, The God of my father helped me, and he delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.
5 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, with his sons and his wife, came to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped by the mountain of God;
6 And he said to Moses, I, your father-in-law Jethro, come to you, with your wife, and her two sons with her.
7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed down, and kissed him; and they asked each other how they were, and they came to the tent.
8 And Moses told his father-in-law all the things that Jehovah had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the trouble they had endured on the way, and how Jehovah had delivered them.
9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the good that Jehovah had done to Israel, in delivering them from the hand of the Egyptians.
10 And Jethro said, Blessed be Jehovah, who delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who delivered the people out of the hand of the Egyptians.
11 Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all the gods; because in what they were arrogant he prevailed against them.
12 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took burnt offerings and sacrifices to God; And Aaron and all the elders of Israel came to eat with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

Jethro visits Moses

13 It came to pass on the next day that Moses sat down to judge the people; and the people stood before Moses from morning until evening.
14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did with the people, he said, “What is this that you do with the people?” Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?
15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to inquire of God.
16 When they have matters, they come to me; and I judge between the one and the other, and declare the ordinances of God and his laws.
17 Then Moses’ father-in-law said to him, What you are doing is not right.

18 You will completely faint, you, and also this people who are with you; because the work is too heavy for you; You won’t be able to do it alone.
19 Hear now my voice; I will advise you, and God will be with you. You stand for the people before God, and submit matters to God.

20 And teach them the ordinances and the laws, and show them the way in which they should walk, and what they should do.
21 Moreover, among all the people, choose men of virtue, fearing God, men of truth, who hate covetousness; and set them over the people as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.
22 They will judge the people at all times; and every serious matter they will bring to you, and they will judge every small matter. In this way you will lighten the burden on you, and they will carry it with you.
23 If you do this, and God commands you, you will be able to sustain yourself, and all this people will also go in peace to their place.
24 And Moses heard the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he said.
25 Moses chose men of virtue from all Israel, and he made them rulers over the people, over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties, and over tens.
26 And they judged the people at all times; They brought the difficult matter to Moses, and they judged every small matter.
27 And Moses sent away his father-in-law, and he went into his land.

Exodus Chapter 19

Israel in Sinai

1 In the third month after the departure of the children of Israel from the land of Egypt, on the same day they came to the desert of Sinai.
2 They had left Rephidim, and came to the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; And Israel camped there before the mountain.
3 And Moses went up to God; and Jehovah called to him from the mountain, saying, Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and declare to the children of Israel:
4 You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I took you on the wings of eagles, and brought you to my.
5 Now therefore, if you will give ear to my voice, and keep my covenant, you will be my special treasure above all people; because all the earth is mine.
6 And you will be to me a kingdom of priests, and holy people. These are the words that you will say to the children of Israel.
7 Then Moses came and called the elders of the people, and declared before them all these words that Jehovah had commanded him.
8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that Jehovah hath spoken we will do. And Moses told the words of the people to Jehovah.
9 Then Jehovah said to Moses, Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may hear while I speak to you, and also so that they may believe you forever. And Moses reported the words of the people to Jehovah.
10 And Jehovah said to Moses, Go to the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow; and wash your clothes,
11 and be prepared for the third day, for on the third day Jehovah will descend in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai.
12 And you shall mark a boundary for the people all around, saying, Beware, do not go up the mountain, nor touch its borders; Whoever touches the mountain will surely die.
13 No hand will touch him, because he will be stoned or shot with arrows; Whether he is an animal or a man, he will not live. When the horn sounds long, they will go up the mountain.
14 And Moses came down from the mountain to the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.
15 And he said unto the people, Be ready for the third day; Don’t touch woman.
16 It came to pass on the third day, when morning came, that there came thunder and lightning, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of a very loud trumpet; and all the people who were in the camp trembled.
17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stopped at the foot of the mountain.
18 All Mount Sinai was smoking, because Jehovah had descended on it in fire; and the smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.

19 The sound of the horn became increasingly loud; Moses spoke, and God answered him with a thunderous voice.
20 And Jehovah came down on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain; And Jehovah called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
21 And Jehovah said to Moses, Go down, command the people not to go beyond the limits to see Jehovah, for a multitude of them will fall.
22 And also let the priests who come to Jehovah be sanctified, so that Jehovah may not destroy them.
23 Moses said to Jehovah, The people will not be able to go up to Mount Sinai, because you have commanded us, saying: Mark the boundaries of the mountain, and sanctify it.
24 And Jehovah said to him, Go, go down, and you shall come up, and Aaron with you; But let not the priests and the people go beyond the limit to go up to Jehovah, lest he wreak havoc upon them.
25 Then Moses went down and told the people.

Exodus Chapter 20

The ten Commandments

1 And God spoke all these words, saying:
2 I am Jehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 You will have no other gods before me.
4 You shall not make for yourself an image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down to them, nor honor them; For I am Jehovah your God, strong and jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
6 and showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 You shall not take the name of Jehovah your God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him innocent who takes his name in vain.
8 Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
9 Six days you will work, and you will do all your work;
10 But the seventh day is a rest to Jehovah your God; Do not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your maidservant, nor your beast, nor your foreigner who is within your gates.
11 For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; Therefore, Jehovah blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it.
12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that Jehovah your God is giving you.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 You shall not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.

The terror of the people

18 All the people watched the noise and the lightning, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; And when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off.
19 And they said to Moses, Speak with us, and we will hear; but let God not speak with us, lest we die.
20 And Moses said to the people, Fear not; for God came to test you, and that the fear of him might be before you, so that you would not sin.
21 Then the people stood at a distance, and Moses approached the darkness where God was.
22 And Jehovah said to Moses, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.
23 Do not make me gods of silver, nor shall you make gods of gold for yourselves.
24 You will make an altar of earth for me, and you will sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your herds; In every place where I cause the memory of my name to be, I will come to you and bless you.
25 And if you make me an altar of stones, do not hew them with stone; for if you lift up a tool on it, you will defile it.
26 You shall not climb steps to my altar, lest your nakedness be revealed near it.
