1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord through the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, and he proclaimed by word of mouth and also in writing throughout his kingdom, saying :
2 Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: The Lord God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
3 Whoever is among you of his people, let God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel (he is the God), which is in Jerusalem.
4 And as for whoever is left, wherever he lives, let the men of his place help him with silver, gold, goods and livestock, as well as freewill offerings for the house of God, which is in Jerusalem.
5 Then arose the heads of the fathers’ houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and Levites, all whose spirit God stirred up to go up to build the house of the Lord, which is in Jerusalem.
6 And all who were around them helped them with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with precious things, in addition to everything that was offered voluntarily.
7 And King Cyrus brought out the vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods.
8 So Cyrus king of Persia brought them out by the hand of Mithridates the treasurer, who gave them as an account to Sheshbazzar prince of Judah.
9 And this is their account: thirty gold bowls, a thousand silver bowls, twenty-nine knives,

61 And of the sons of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Cosh, the sons of Barzilai, who took a wife from the daughters of Barzilai the Gileadite, and was called by their name.
62 These searched for his genealogical record, and it was not found; and they were excluded from the priesthood,
63 and the governor told them not to eat of the most holy things, until there was a priest to consult with Urim and Thummim.
64 The whole congregation, united as one man, was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,

68 And some of the heads of the fathers’ houses, when they came to the house of the Lord which was in Jerusalem, made freewill offerings for the house of God, to rebuild it in its place.
69 According to their strength, they gave the treasurer of the work sixty-one thousand drachmas of gold, five thousand pounds of silver, and one hundred priestly robes.
70 And the priests, the Levites, the people, the singers, the doorkeepers, and the temple servants lived in their cities; and all Israel in their cities.
1 When the seventh month arrived, and the children of Israel were already established in the cities, the people gathered together as one man in Jerusalem.
2 Then Jeshua the son of Jehozadak and his brothers the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his brothers arose, and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.
3 And they placed the altar on its base, because they were afraid of the people of the lands, and they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, burnt offerings in the morning and in the evening.
4 They also celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles, as it is written, and burnt offerings every day in order according to the ritual, each in its day;
5 Besides this, the continual burnt offering, the new moons, and all the solemn festivals of the Lord, and every spontaneous sacrifice, every freewill offering to the Lord.
6 From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord; but the foundation of the temple of the Lord had not yet been laid.
7 And they gave money to the bricklayers and carpenters; also food, drink and oil to the Sidonians and Tyrians to bring cedar wood from Lebanon by sea to Joppa, according to the will of Cyrus king of Persia regarding this.
8 In the second year of his coming to the house of God in Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, Jeshua the son of Jehozadak, and the rest of his brothers, the priests and the Levites, and all those who had come from the captivity to Jerusalem; And they appointed the Levites from twenty years old and up to activate the work of the house of Jehovah.
9 Jeshua also, his sons and his brothers, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, as one man attended to activate those who did the work in the house of God, together with the sons of Henadad, his sons and his brothers. , levitates.
10 And when the builders of the temple of the LORD were laying the foundation, they set the priests clothed in their robes and with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the LORD, according to the ordinance of David king of Israel.
11 And they sang, praising and giving thanks to the Lord, and saying, Because he is good, because his mercy endures forever on Israel. And all the people shouted with great joy, praising the Lord because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.
12 And many of the priests, the Levites, and the heads of the fathers’ houses, the elders who had seen the first house, seeing the foundation of this house being laid, wept aloud, while many others gave loud shouts of joy.
13 And the people could not distinguish the clamor from the shouts of joy, from the voice of weeping; because the people cried out with great joy, and the noise could be heard even from afar.
1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that those who had come from captivity were building the temple of the Lord God of Israel,
2 they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the fathers’ houses, and said to them, We will build with you, because like you we seek your God , and to him we have offered sacrifices since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us here.
3 Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the fathers of Israel said, “It is not fitting for us to build a house for our God with you, but we alone will build it for the Lord God of Israel, as King Cyrus, king of Persia, commanded us.”
4 But the people of the land intimidated the people of Judah, and frightened them from building.
5 They also bribed the counselors against them to thwart their intentions, all the time of Cyrus king of Persia and until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote accusations against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7 Also in the days of Artaxerxes, Bislam, Mithridates, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing and language of the letter were in Aramaic.
8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimsai the secretary wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes.
9 On that date wrote Rehum the chancellor and Shimsai the secretary, and their other companions, the judges, governors and officials, and those of Persia, of Erech, of Babylon, of Susa, that is, the Elamites,
10 and the other peoples that the great and glorious Asnapar transported and inhabited the cities of Samaria and the other provinces on the other side of the river.
11 And this is the copy of the letter they sent: To King Artaxerxes: Your servants across the river greet you.
12 Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you to us came to Jerusalem; and they build the rebellious and evil city, and raise the walls and repair the foundations.
13 Now let it be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt, and the walls are raised, they will not pay tribute, taxes and revenues, and the treasury of the kings will be diminished.
14 Since we are kept from the palace, it is not fair for us to see the king’s contempt, so we have sent to inform the king,
15 so that it can be searched in the book of the memories of your fathers. You will find in the book of memories, and you will know that this city is a rebellious city, and harmful to the kings and the provinces, and that from ancient times rebellions were formed in its midst, for which this city was destroyed.
16 We inform the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls raised, the region beyond the river will not be yours.
17 The king sent this answer: To Rehum the chancellor, to Shimsai the secretary, to his other companions who live in Samaria, and to the rest on the other side of the river: Health and peace.
18 The letter you sent us was read clearly before me.
19 And by me the order was given and they searched; and they found that that city of ancient times rises up against the kings and rebels, and sedition is formed in it;
20 and that there were strong kings in Jerusalem who ruled in everything beyond the river, and that tribute, taxes and revenues were paid to them.
21 Now therefore give the order that those men cease, and let that city not be rebuilt until a new order is given by me.
22 And see that you are not negligent in this; Why should the damage increase to the detriment of kings?
23 Then, when the copy of the letter of King Artaxerxes was read before Rehum, and Shimsai’s secretary, and his companions, they hastened to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them cease with power and violence.
24 Then the work of the house of God that was in Jerusalem ceased, and was suspended until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
1 Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, both prophets, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel who was over them.
2 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jehozadak arose, and began to rebuild the house of God that was in Jerusalem; and with them the prophets of God who helped them.
3 At that time Tatnai, the governor from the other side of the river, and Shethar-boznai and his companions came to them, and said to them: Who gave you orders to build this house and raise these walls?
4 They also asked: What are the names of the men who make this building?
5 But the eyes of God were upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not cause them to cease until the matter was brought to Darius; and then they responded by letter about this.
6 A copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor of the other side of the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions, the governors who were on the other side of the river, sent to King Darius.
7 They sent him a letter, and thus it was written in it: To King Darius all peace.
8 Let it be known to the king that we went to the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is built with large stones; and the beams are already placed on the walls, and the work is done quickly, and prospers in their hands.
9 Then we asked the elders, saying to them: Who gave you orders to build this house and to erect these walls?
10 And we also asked their names to let you know, to write to you the names of the men who were over them.
11 And they answered us saying thus: We are servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we rebuild the house that had been built many years before, which the great king of Israel built and finished.
12 But after our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to anger, he delivered them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried the people captive to Babylon.
13 But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus himself gave orders for this house of God to be rebuilt.
14 Also the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple of Babylon, King Cyrus took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed as governor;
15 and said to him, Take these utensils, go, and take them to the temple that is in Jerusalem; and let the house of God be rebuilt in its place.
16 Then this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God, which is in Jerusalem, and from then until now it has been built, and is not yet finished.
17 And now, if it pleases the king, let him search in the king’s treasure house which is there in Babylon, if it be so that by King Cyrus the order had been given to rebuild this house of God in Jerusalem, and we were told. send to tell the king’s will on this.
1 Then King Darius gave the order to search the archives, where they kept the treasures there in Babylon.
2 And there was found at Acmeta, in the palace which is in the province of Media, a book in which it was written: Memory:
3 In the first year of king Cyrus, king Cyrus himself gave order concerning the house of God , which was in Jerusalem, that the house might be rebuilt as a place for offering sacrifices, and that its walls might be firm; Its height is sixty cubits, and its width is sixty cubits;
4 and three rows of large stones, and one of new wood; and that the expense be paid by the king’s treasury.
5 And also the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and carried them over to Babylon, be returned and go to their place, to the temple that is in Jerusalem, and be placed in the house of God.
6 Now therefore, Tatnai governor of the other side of the river, Setar-boznai, and your companions the governors who are on the other side of the river, depart from there.
7 Let the work of that house of God be done; Let the governor of the Jews and his elders rebuild that house of God in his place.
8 And by me an order is given what you are to do with those elders of the Jews, to rebuild that house of God; That from the king’s estate, which he has from the tribute from the other side of the river, the expenses be punctually given to those men, so that the work does not cease.
9 And whatever is necessary, calves, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to what the priests who are in Jerusalem say, may be given to them day by day without any hindrance,
10 so that they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king and for his children.
11 It is also ordered by me that whoever tampers with this decree must have a piece of wood torn from his house and lifted up and hanged on it, and his house be made a dunghill for this.
12 And the God who made his name dwell there, destroy all kings and people who lay their hand on him to change or destroy that house of God, which is in Jerusalem. I Darius have given the decree; be fulfilled promptly.
13 Then Tatnai, governor of the other side of the river, and Shethar-boznai and his companions did exactly as King Darius had ordered.
14 And the elders of the Jews built and prospered, according to the prophecy of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. So they built and finished, by order of the God of Israel, and by command of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.
fifteenThis house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.
16 Then the children of Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the rest who had come out of captivity, dedicated this house of God with joy.
17 And they offered at the dedication of this house of God one hundred calves, two hundred rams, and four hundred lambs; and twelve goats as a sin offering for all Israel, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.
18 And they appointed the priests in their courses, and the Levites in their classes, for the service of God in Jerusalem, according to what was written in the book of Moses.
19 The children of the captivity also celebrated the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.
20 For the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together; They were all clean, and they sacrificed the Passover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brothers the priests, and for themselves.
21 The children of Israel who had returned from captivity ate, along with all those who had turned away from the filth of the people of the land to seek the Lord God of Israel.
22 And they celebrated with joy the feast of unleavened bread seven days, because the LORD had made them glad, and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward them, to strengthen his hands in the work of the house of God, of the God From Israel.
1 After these things had passed, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,
2 the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitob,
3 the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraiot,
4 son of Zeraiah, son of Uzi, son of Buchi,
5 son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the first priest,
6 this Ezra came up from Babylon. He was a diligent scribe in the law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all that he asked, because the hand of the Lord his God was on Ezra.
7 And with him went up to Jerusalem some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, and servants of the temple, in the seventh year of king Artaxerxes.
8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month of the seventh year of the king.
9 For on the first day of the first month was the beginning of his departure from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, the good hand of God being with him.
10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to inquire into the law of the Lord and to do it, and to teach his statutes and decrees in Israel.
11 This is the copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, a scribe versed in the commandments of the Lord and in his statutes to Israel:
12 Artaxerxes king of kings, to Ezra, a priest and scribe learned in the law of the God of sky: Peace.
13 By me it is given a command that everyone in my kingdom, of the people of Israel and their priests and Levites, who wants to go with you to Jerusalem, must go.
14 For you have been sent by the king and his seven counselors to visit Judea and Jerusalem, according to the law of your God which is in your hand;
15 and to take the silver and gold that the king and his counselors willingly offer to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem,
16 and all the silver and gold that you find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offerings of the people and of the priests, who willingly offer for the house of their God, which is in Jerusalem.
17 Therefore you shall diligently purchase with this money calves, rams, and lambs, with their offerings and their libations, and you shall offer them on the altar of the house of your God, which is in Jerusalem.
18 And whatever it seems to you and your brothers to do with the other silver and gold, do it according to the will of your God.
19 You shall restore the utensils that are given to you for the service of the house of your God before God in Jerusalem.
twentyAnd all that is required for the house of your God, that you need to give, you will give from the king’s treasure house.
21 And by me, Artaxerxes king, a command is given to all the treasurers who are on the other side of the river, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, asks of you, may be granted promptly,
22 up to one hundred talents of silver, one hundred cors of wheat, one hundred baths of wine, and one hundred baths of oil; and salt without measure.
23 Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be done quickly for the house of the God of heaven; For why should his anger be against the king’s kingdom and his sons?
24 And we make known to you that on all the priests and Levites, singers, doorkeepers, servants of the temple and ministers of the house of God, no one may impose tribute, contribution or rent.
25 And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom that you have from your God, appoint judges and governors to govern all the people who are on the other side of the river, all those who know the laws of your God; and whoever does not know them, you will teach him.
26 And whoever does not keep the law of your God, and the law of the king, let him be judged promptly, whether to death, to banishment, to fine, or to imprisonment.
27 Blessed is the Lord, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing in the heart of the king to honor the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem,
28 and has shown mercy to me before the king and his counselors and all the mighty princes. King. And I, strengthened by the hand of my God upon me, gathered the leaders of Israel to go up with me.
1 These are the heads of fathers’ houses, and the genealogy of those who came up with me from Babylon, during the reign of King Artaxerxes:
2 Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom; of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel; of David’s sons, Hathus.
3 Of the sons of Shecaniah and of the sons of Paros, Zechariah, and with him, in the line of men, one hundred and fifty.
4 Of the sons of Pahat-moab, Elioenai the son of Zeraiah, and with him two hundred men.
5 Of the sons of Shecaniah the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred men.
6 Of the sons of Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty men.
7 Of the sons of Elam, Jesaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy men.
8 Of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him eighty men.
9 Of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen men.
10 Of the sons of Shelomith, the son of Josipiah, and with him one hundred and sixty men.
11 Of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty-eight men.
12 Of the sons of Azgad, Johanan the son of Hakatan, and with him one hundred and ten men;
13 Of the sons of Adonicam, the last, whose names are these: Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them sixty men.
14 And of the sons of Bigvai, Utai and Zabud, and with them sixty men.
15 I gathered them by the river that goes to Ahava, and we camped there three days; And when I searched among the people and among the priests, I found none of the sons of Levi there.
16 Then I sent Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, leading men, also Joiarib and Elnathan, learned men;
17 And I sent them to Iddo, the ruler in the place called Cassiphia, and put in their mouths the words that they were to speak to Iddo, and to his brothers the servants of the temple in the place called Casiphia, so that they would bring us ministers for the house. of our God.
18 And they brought us according to the good hand of our God upon us, a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli the son of Levi, the son of Israel; Sherebiah with his sons and his brothers, eighteen;
19 Hasabiah, and with him Jesaiah of the sons of Merari, his brothers, and his sons, twenty;
20 And of the servants of the temple, whom David with the princes appointed for the ministry of the Levites, two hundred and twenty servants of the temple, all of whom were designated by name.
twenty-oneAnd I fasted there by the river Ahava, to afflict us before our God, to request from him a straight path for us, and for our children, and for all our possessions.
22 Because I was ashamed to ask the king for troops and horsemen to defend us from the enemy on the road; for we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is for good upon all them that seek him; but his power and his fury are against all who forsake him.
23 So we fasted and asked our God about this, and he was kind to us.
24 Then I separated twelve of the chief priests, Sherebiah and Hasabiah, and with them ten of his brothers;
25 And I weighed them the silver, the gold, and the utensils, an offering that the king and his counselors and his princes, and all Israel present there, had offered for the house of our God.
26 So I weighed into their hands six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and vessels of silver for one hundred talents, and one hundred talents of gold;
27 In addition, twenty gold bowls worth a thousand drachmas, and two vessels of very fine burnished bronze, precious as gold.
28 And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the Lord, and the vessels, and the silver, and the gold, are holy, a free will offering unto the Lord God of our fathers.
29 Keep watch and guard them, until you weigh them before the chief priests and Levites, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of Israel in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the Lord.
30 The priests and the Levites received the weight of the silver and gold and the utensils, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.
31 And we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth of the first month, to go to Jerusalem; and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and from the lurker in the way.
32 And we came to Jerusalem, and rested there three days.
33 On the fourth day the silver, the gold, and the utensils were weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the priest son of Uriah, and with him Eleazar son of Phinehas; and with them Jozabad the son of Jeshua and Noadiah the son of Binui, Levites.
34 By account and by weight everything was delivered, and all that weight was recorded at that time.
35 The children of the captivity, who had come out of captivity, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel, twelve calves for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve goats for a sin offering, all as a burnt offering to the Lord.
36 And they delivered the king’s dispatches to his satraps and captains on the other side of the river, who helped the people and the house of God.
1 When these things were finished, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel and the priests and Levites have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, from the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites. , and do according to their abominations.
2 For they have taken some of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, and the holy lineage has been mixed with the people of the lands; and the hand of princes and governors has been the first to commit this sin.
3 When I heard this, I tore my clothing and my cloak, and tore out hair from my head and from my beard, and I sat down in extreme distress.
4 And all those who feared the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those in captivity, gathered together to me; but I was very distressed until the hour of the evening sacrifice.
5 And at the time of the evening sacrifice I arose from my affliction, and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell on my knees, and stretched out my hands to the Lord my God,
6 and said, My God, I am confounded and ashamed. to lift up my face to you, O my God, for our iniquities have multiplied over our heads, and our crimes have increased to heaven.
7 From the days of our fathers until this day we have lived in great sin; and for our iniquities we, our kings and our priests, have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to theft, and to shame that covers our faces, as it is today.
8 And now for a little while there has been mercy from the Lord our God, to make a remnant free for us, and to give us a safe place in his sanctuary, so that our God may enlighten our eyes and give us a little life in our servitude.
9 For we are servants; But our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has shown us mercy before the kings of Persia, so that we may be given life to build up the house of our God and to restore its ruins, and to give us protection in Judah and in Jerusalem.
10 But now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,
11 which you commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, The land into which you are entering to possess is an unclean land because of the uncleanness of the people of those regions, because of the abominations of which they They have filled from one end to the other with their filth.
12 Now therefore you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons, nor shall you ever seek their peace or their prosperity; so that you may be strong and eat the good of the land, and leave it as an inheritance to your children forever.
13 But after all that has happened to us because of our evil deeds, and because of our great sin, since you, our God, have not punished us according to our iniquities, and have given us a remnant like this,
14 Do we have to break your commandments again, and become acquainted with people who commit these abominations? Would you not be indignant against us until we were consumed, with no remnant left and no one to escape?
15 O Lord God of Israel, you are righteous, since we are left a remnant that has escaped, as on this day. Here we are before you in our crimes; because it is not possible to be in your presence because of this.
1 While Ezra was praying and making confession, weeping and prostrating himself before the house of God, a very large crowd of Israel gathered to him, men, women and children; and the people wept bitterly.
2 Then answered Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the children of Elam, and said to Ezra, We have sinned against our God, for we have taken foreign wives from the peoples of the land; but despite this, there is still hope for Israel.
3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God, that we will put away all the women and those born to them, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
4 Get up, for this is your obligation, and we will be with you; Make an effort, and get to work.
5 Then Ezra stood up and swore an oath to the chief priests and Levites, and to all Israel, that they would do accordingly; and they swore.
6 Then Ezra arose from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Johanan son of Eliashib; He and gone there, he did not eat bread nor drink water, because he was sad because of the sin of those in captivity.
7 And they proclaimed in Judah and in Jerusalem that all the children of the captivity should be gathered to Jerusalem;
8 and that whoever did not come within three days, according to the agreement of the princes and elders, would lose all his property, and he would be excluded from the congregation of those in captivity.
9 So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together in Jerusalem within three days, on the twentieth day of the month, which was the ninth month; And all the people sat in the square of the house of God, trembling because of that matter, and because of the rain.
10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have sinned because you took foreign wives, thus adding to the sin of Israel.”
11 Now therefore give glory to the Lord God of your fathers, and do his will, and separate yourselves from the people of the lands, and from foreign women.
12 And all the assembly answered, and said with a loud voice, Let it be done according to thy word.
13 But the people are many, and the weather is rainy, and we cannot be in the street; Neither the work takes one day nor two, because there are many of us who have sinned in this.
14 Let our princes remain in place of the entire congregation, and all those who in our cities have taken foreign wives, let them come at appointed times, and with them the elders of each city, and the judges of them, until we remove from us the fierce wrath of our God upon this.
fifteenOnly Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahaziah son of Ticva opposed this, and the Levites Meshullam and Sabtai helped them.
