1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God moved on the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light; and it was the light.
4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and morning one day.
6 Then God said, Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the expanse, and he separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was like that.
8 And God called the expanse Heavens. And there was evening and morning the second day.
9 God also said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together in one place, and let the dry land be revealed. And it was like that.
10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering of the waters he called Seas. And God saw that he was good.
11 Then God said, Let the earth produce green grass, grass yielding seed; fruit tree that bears fruit according to its kind, that its seed is in it, on the earth. And it was like that.
12 So the earth brought forth green grass, grass yielding seed according to its kind, and a tree yielding fruit, whose seed is in it, according to its kind. And God saw that he was good.
13 And there was evening and morning on the third day.
14 Then God said: Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them serve as signs for the seasons, for days and years,
15 and be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth. And it was like that.
16 And God made the two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he also made the stars.
17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,
18 and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And he saw God that he was good.
19 And there was evening and morning on the fourth day.
20 God said: Let the waters produce living creatures, and birds that fly over the earth, in the open expanse of the heavens.
21 And God created the great sea monsters, and every living creature that moves, which the waters produced according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that he was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.
23 And there was evening and morning on the fifth day.
24 Then God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds, beasts and creeping things and animals of the earth according to their kinds. And it was like that.
25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kind, and cattle according to their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that he was good.
26 Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.
27 And God created man in his image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
28 And God blessed them, and he said to them, Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over all the living things that move on the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant that yields seed, which is upon all the earth, and every tree in which there is fruit and that yields seed; They will be for you to eat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to every creeping thing on the earth, in which there is life, every green plant shall be for food. And it was like that.
31 And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, he was very good. And there was evening and morning the sixth day.
1 So the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their host.
2 And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he did.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it, because on it he rested from all the work that he had done in creation.
4 These are the origins of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that Jehovah God made the earth and the heavens,
5 and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it was born; for Jehovah God had not yet caused rain to fall on the earth, nor was there a man to till the earth,
6 but a mist came up from the earth and watered the whole face of the earth.
7 Then the Jehovah God formed the man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
8 And the Jehovah God planted a garden in Eden eastward; and he put there the man whom he had formed.
9 And the Jehovah God made to grow out of the ground every tree that is delightful to the sight and good for food; also the tree of life in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 And a river came out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it was divided into four branches.
11 The name of the one was Piso; This is the one that surrounds the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold;
12 and the gold of that land is good; There is also bdellium and onyx there.
13 The name of the second river is Gihon; This is the one that surrounds the entire land of Cush.
14 And the name of the third river is Hidekel; This is the one that goes to the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 So Jehovah God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
16 And the Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, From every tree of the garden you may eat;
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.
18 And the Jehovah God said, It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.
19 So out of the ground the Jehovah God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever Adam called the living animals, that is his name.
20 And Adam gave names to every beast and to the fowl of the air and to every livestock of the field; but for Adam no help meet was found for him.
21 Then the Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and while he slept, he took one of his ribs, and closed the flesh in its place.
22 And of the rib that the Jehovah God took from the man, he made a woman, and brought her to the man.
23 Then Adam said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; She will be called Woman, because she was taken from Man.
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, Adam and his wife, and were not ashamed.
1 But the serpent was more crafty than all the animals of the field that the Jehovah God had made; which he said to the woman: Has God then said to you, Do not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden;
3 But of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, God said, You shall not eat of it, nor touch it, lest you die.
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die;
5 But God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
6 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant in her eyes, and a desirable tree to make one wise; and she took of the fruit thereof, and ate; and he also gave it to her husband, who ate it as well as her.
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; So they sewed fig leaves together and made aprons for themselves.
8 And they heard the voice of the Jehovah God walking in the garden in the cool of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Jehovah God among the trees of the garden.
9 But the Jehovah God called to the man and said to him, Where are you?
10 And he answered, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because he was naked; and I hid.
11 And God said to him: Who taught you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat?
12 And the man answered, The woman whom you gave me as a companion gave me the tree, and I ate.
13 Then the Jehovah God said to the woman, What have you done? And the woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate.
14 And the Jehovah God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle and above all the animals of the field; You will walk on your chest, and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; she will bruise your head, and you will bruise her heel.
16 To the woman he said, I will greatly multiply the pain of your pregnancies; In pain you will give birth to children; and your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.
17 And to the man he said, Because you obeyed the voice of your wife, and ate of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed will be the land because of you; In pain you will eat of it all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat plants of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the land, because from it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you will return.
20 And Adam called the name of his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
21 And the Jehovah God made the man and his woman coats of skin, and clothed them.
22 And the Jehovah God said, Behold, the man is like one of us, knowing good and evil; Now therefore let him not stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever.
23 And the Jehovah brought him out of the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken.
24 So he cast out the man, and placed cherubim on the east side of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword moving on every side, to guard the way to the tree of life.
1 Adam knew his wife Eve, who conceived and gave birth to Cain, and said, By the will of the Jehovah I have acquired a man.
2 Then she gave birth to her brother Abel. And Abel was a shepherd of sheep, and Cain was a husbandman of the land.
3 And as time went on, Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Jehovah.
4 And Abel also brought of the firstborn of his sheep, of the fattest of them. And the Jehovah looked with favor on Abel and on his offering;
5 But he did not look with favor on Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
6 Then the Jehovah said to Cain, Why have you become angry, and why has your countenance fallen?
7 If you do well, will you not be exalted? and if you do not do well, sin is at the door; With all this, his desire will be yours, and you will rule over him.
8 And Cain said to his brother Abel, Let us go out into the field. And it came to pass, while they were in the field, that Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him.
9 And the Jehovah said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he answered: I don’t know. Am I my brother’s guardian?
10 And he said to him, What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the earth.
11 Now therefore be cursed to you from the ground, for he has opened his mouth to receive your brother’s blood at your hand.
12 When you till the land, it will not give you its strength again; You will be a wanderer and a stranger in the land.
13 And Cain said to the Jehovah, My punishment is too great to bear.
14 Behold, today you cast me out of the land, and I will hide myself from your presence, and I will be a wanderer and a stranger in the land; and it will come to pass that whoever finds me will kill me.
15 And the Jehovah said unto him, Surely whosoever killeth Cain shall be punished sevenfold. Then the Jehovah put a mark on Cain, so that anyone who found him would not kill him.
16 So Cain went out from before the Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch.
18 And to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad begat Mehujael, and Mehujael begat Methushael, and Methushael begat Lamech.
19 And Lamech took to himself two wives; The name of the one was Ada, and the name of the other was Zilah.
20 And Ada gave birth to Jabal, who became the father of those who live in tents and keep cattle.
21 And the name of her brother was Jubal, who was the father of all those who play the harp and the flute.
22 And Zila also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the maker of all works of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naama.
23 And Lamech said to his wives, Ada and Zilah, hear my voice; Women of Lamech, hear my saying: I will kill a man for my wound, And a young man for my blow.
24 If Cain will be avenged seven times, Lamech will truly be avenged seventy times seven.
25 And Adam knew her wife again, and she bore him a son, and he called her name Seth: For God (she said) has substituted another son for me in the place of Abel, whom Cain killed.
26 And to Seth also a son was born, and he called her name Enos. Then men began to call on the name of Jehovah.
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. On the day that God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.
2 Male and female he created them; and he blessed them, and called their name Adam, on the day they were created.
3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his likeness, after his image, and he called his name Seth.
4 And the days of Adam were after he begat Seth eight hundred years, and he begat sons and daughters.
5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.
6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begat Enos.
7 And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died.
9 Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan.
10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years; and he died.
12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel.
13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters.
14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.
15 Mahalaleel lived sixty-five years, and begat Jared.
16 And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.
17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died.
18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begat Enoch.
19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.
21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah.
22 And Enoch walked with God, after he begat Methuselah, three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years.
24 So Enoch walked with God, and disappeared, because God took him.
25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and became the father of Lamech.
26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred and eighty-two years, and begat sons and daughters.
27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.
28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and fathered a son;
29 and he called his name Noah, saying, This one will relieve us from our works and from the labor of our hands, because of the land which the Jehovah cursed.
30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred and ninety-five years, and begat sons and daughters.
31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.
32 And when Noah was five hundred years old, he begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
1 It came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,
2 that the sons of God, seeing that the daughters of men were beautiful, took wives for themselves, choosing among them all.
3 And the Jehovah said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for he is flesh; but his days will be one hundred and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days, and also after that the sons of God came to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the brave men who from ancient times were men of renown.
5 And the Jehovah saw that the wickedness of men was great in the land, and that every imagination of the thoughts of their heart was only evil continually.
6 And the Jehovah repented that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart.
7 And the Jehovah said, I will destroy from the face of the earth the men whom I have created, from man to beast, and to creeping things, and to the birds of the air; Well, I regret having done them.
8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Jehovah.
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah, a righteous man, was perfect in his generations; Noah walked with God.
10 And Noah begat three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was full of violence.
12 And God looked at the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth.
13 So God said to Noah: I have decided the end of everything, because the earth is full of violence because of them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; You will make rooms in the ark, and you will caulk it with pitch inside and out.
15 And this is how you will make it: the length of the ark will be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
16 You will make a window for the ark, and you will finish it at a cubit elevation from the top; and you will place the door of the ark by its side; and you will make it a ground floor, second and third floor.
17 And behold, I bring a flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which there is the spirit of life under heaven; everything on earth will die.
18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you, will enter the ark.
19 And of all living things, of all flesh, two of every kind you shall bring into the ark, so that they may live with you; male and female they will be.
20 Of the birds according to their kind, and of the beasts according to their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth according to its kind, two of each kind shall come in with you, that they may have life.
21 And take with you all the food that is eaten, and store it up, and it will provide sustenance for you and for them.
22 And Noah did so; He did according to everything that God commanded him.
1 Then the Jehovah said to Noah, Go you and all your house into the ark; for I have seen you right before me in this generation.
2 Of every clean animal you shall take seven pairs, male and its female; but of the animals that are not clean, a pair, the male and his female.
3 Also of the birds of the air, seven pairs, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of the earth.
4 For after seven days have passed, I will cause it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights; and I will wipe out from the face of the earth every living creature that I have made.
5 And Noah did according to all that the Jehovah commanded him.
6 Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth.
7 And because of the waters of the flood Noah entered into the ark, and with him his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives.
8 Of the clean animals, and of the animals that were not clean, and of the birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth,
9 two by two they entered with Noah into the ark; male and female, as God commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass on the seventh day that the waters of the flood came upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the waterfalls of heaven were opened,
12 and there was rain on the earth forty days and forty nights.
13 On this same day Noah, and Shem, Ham, and Japheth, sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons, entered with him into the ark;
14 them, and all wild animals according to their kinds, and all domesticated animals according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth according to its kind, and every bird according to its kind, and every bird of every kind.
15 So they came with Noah to the ark, two by two of all flesh in which was the spirit of life.
16 And those who came, male and female of all flesh, came, as God had commanded; and the Jehovah closed the door on him.
17 And the flood lasted forty days on the earth; and the waters increased, and lifted up the ark, and it rose above the earth.
18 And the waters rose and increased greatly on the earth; and the ark floated on the surface of the waters.
19 And the waters rose greatly upon the earth; and all the high mountains that were under all the heavens were covered.
20 Fifteen cubits higher the waters rose, after the mountains were covered.
21 And all flesh that moves on the earth died, both birds and cattle and beasts, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man.
22 Everything that had the breath of the spirit of life in his nostrils, everything that was on the earth, died.
23 Thus was destroyed every living thing that lived on the face of the earth, from man to beast, creeping things, and birds of the air; and they were destroyed from the earth, and only Noah remained, and those who were with him in the ark.
24 And the waters prevailed over the earth one hundred and fifty days.
1 And God remembered Noah, and all the animals, and all the beasts that were with him in the ark; And God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided.
2 And the fountains of the deep and the waterfalls of heaven were closed; and the rain from heaven was stopped.
3 And the waters gradually decreased from off the earth; and the waters receded after one hundred and fifty days.
4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.
5 And the waters decreased until the tenth month; On the tenth, on the first of the month, the tops of the mountains were discovered.
6 It came to pass after forty days that Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made,
7 and sent out a raven, which came out and came and went until the waters were dried up from the earth.
8 He also sent a dove from him to see if the waters had receded from the face of the earth.
9 And the dove could not find a place to rest the sole of his foot, and it returned to him to the ark, because the waters were still on the face of the whole earth. Then he stretched out his hand, and taking it, he brought it with him into the ark.
10 He waited another seven days, and again sent the dove out of the ark.
11 And the dove returned to him in the evening; and behold, he had an olive leaf in his beak; And Noah understood that the waters had receded from the earth.
12 And he waited another seven days, and sent out the dove, which returned no more to him.
13 And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year of Noah, in the first month, on the first day of the month, that the waters were dried up from the earth; And Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the earth was dry.
14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the land was dry.
15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying,
16 Come out of the ark, you, and your wife, and your sons, and your sons’ wives with you.
17 All the animals that are with you of all flesh, of birds and beasts and of every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, you will take out with you; and go through the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.
18 Then Noah went out, and his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives with him.
19 All the animals, and every creeping thing, and every bird, and everything that moves on the earth according to its kind, came out of the ark.
20 And Noah built an altar to the Jehovah, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered a burnt offering on the altar.
21 And the Jehovah smelled a sweet aroma; And the Jehovah said in his heart, I will no more curse the land because of man; because the intent of a man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
22 As long as the earth remains, sowing and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night will not cease.
1 God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
2 The fear and fear of you will be on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the air, on everything that moves on the earth, and on all the fish in the sea; into your hand they are delivered.
3 Everything that moves and lives will be your maintenance: just as the vegetables and green plants, I have given you everything.
4 But flesh with its life, which is its blood, you shall not eat.
5 For I will surely require the blood of your lives; I will require it at the hand of every animal, and at the hand of man; At the hand of a man his brother I will require the life of a man.
6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood will be shed; because in the image of God man is made.
7 But you be fruitful and multiply; procreate abundantly on the earth, and multiply in it.
8 And God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying:
9 Behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your descendants after you;
10 and with every living creature that is with you; birds, animals, and every beast of the earth that is with you, from all those that came out of the ark to every beast of the earth.
11 I will establish my covenant with you, and I will no longer destroy all flesh with the waters of the flood, nor will there be any more flood to destroy the earth.
12 And God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I establish between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for everlasting ages:
13 I have set my bow in the clouds, which will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
14 And it will come to pass, that when I bring clouds upon the earth, then my bow will be seen in the clouds.
15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and there will be no more flood of waters to destroy all flesh.
16 The bow will be in the clouds, and I will see it, and I will remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature, with all flesh that is on the earth.
17 So God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.
18 And the sons of Noah that came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of Canaan.
19 These three are the sons of Noah, and the whole earth was filled with them.
20 Then Noah began to till the land, and planted a vineyard;
21 And he drank of the wine, and became drunk, and was uncovered in the midst of his tent.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers who were outside.
23 Then Shem and Japheth took the garment, and put it on their own shoulders, and walking backwards, they covered the nakedness of his father, having turned their faces, and so they did not see the nakedness of his father.
24 And Noah awoke from his drunkenness, and knew what his youngest son had done to him,
25 and said, Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants will be to his brothers.
26 He said further: Blessed by the Jehovah my God be Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.
27 May God magnify Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.
28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
29 And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.
1 These are the generations of Noah’s sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth, to whom sons were born after the flood.
2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras.
3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarma.
4 The sons of Javan: Elisa, Tarshish, Chittim and Dodanim.
5 Of these the coasts were peopled, each according to his language, according to his families in his nations.
6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan.
7 And the sons of Cush: Sheba, Havilah, Sabtha, Raama, and Sabteca. And the sons of Raama: Sheba and Dedan.
8 And Cush begat Nimrod, who became the first mighty man on earth.
9 This man was a mighty hunter before the Jehovah; therefore it is said: Even as Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Jehovah.
10 And the kingdom of Babel, Erech, Akkad, and Calne, in the land of Shinar, began.
11 From this land he went out to Assyria, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth, Calah,
12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah, which is a great city.
13 Mizraim begat Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim,
14 Patrusim, Casluhim, from whom came the Philistines, and Caphtorim.
15 And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, Heth,
16 the Jebusite, the Amorite, the Girgashite,
17 the Hivite, the Araite, the Sinite,
18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite; and then the families of the Canaanites were scattered.
19 And the territory of the Canaanites was from Sidon, towards Gerar, to Gaza; and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Adma and Zeboim, as far as Lasa.
20 These are the sons of Ham by their families, by their languages, in their lands, in their nations.
21 Sons were also born to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the elder brother of Japheth.
22 The sons of Shem were Elam, Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram.
23 And the children of Aram: Uz, Hul, Geter and Mas.
24 Arphaxad begat Shelah, and Shelah begat Eber.
25 And to Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, because in his days the land was divided; and the name of his brother, Joktan.
26 And Joktan begat Almodad, Sheleph, Hazar-maveth, Jera,
27 Adoram, Uzal, Diklah,
28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were sons of Joktan.
30 And the land in which they lived was from Mesha in the direction of Sephar, to the mountainous region of the east.
31 These were the children of Shem by their families, by their languages, in their lands, in their nations.
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah by their descendants, in their nations; and from these the nations were scattered on the earth after the flood.
1 Then the whole earth had one language and one word.
2 And it came to pass, when they went out from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they settled there.
3 And they said to one another, Come, let us make brick and bake it with fire. And brick was used instead of stone, and asphalt instead of mortar.
4 And they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, the top of which will reach to heaven; and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.
5 And the Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men were building.
6 And the Jehovah said, Behold, the people are one, and they all have one language; and they have begun the work, and nothing will now make them desist from what they have planned to do.
7 Now therefore let us go down and confuse their language there, so that no one may understand the speech of his companion.
8 So the Jehovah scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Jehovah confused the language of the whole earth, and from there he scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem, who was a hundred years old, begat Arphaxad two years after the flood.
11 And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
12 Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Salah.
13 And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
14 Salah lived thirty years and became the father of Eber.
15 And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg.
17 And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.
18 Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu.
19 And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.
20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug.
21 And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
22 Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor.
23 And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begat Terah.
25 And Nahor lived after he begat Terah one hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
26 Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 These are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
28 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves; The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, daughter of Haran, father of Milcah and Ishca.
30 But Sarai was barren, and she had no son.
31 And Terah took his son Abram, and Lot the son of Haran, the son of his son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran, and stayed there.
32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
1 But the Jehovah had said to Abram, Go from your country and from your kindred, and from your father’s house, to the land that I will show you.
2 And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed in you.
4 And Abram departed, as the Jehovah had told him; and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.
5 So Abram took his wife Sarai, and his brother’s son Lot, and all their property that they had gained and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they left to go to the land of Canaan; They came to the land of Canaan.
6 And Abram passed through that land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh; and the Canaanite was then in the land.
7 And the Jehovah appeared to Abram and said to him, To your descendants I will give this land. And he built there an altar to the Jehovah, who had appeared to him.
8 Then he moved from there to a mountain east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and he built there an altar to the Jehovah, and called on the name of the Jehovah.
9 And Abram departed from there, walking and going toward the Negev.
10 Then there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there; because the famine was great in the land.
11 And it came to pass, when he was about to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold, now I know that thou art a beautiful woman;
12 And when the Egyptians see you, they will say: She is his wife; and they will kill me, and they will save your life.
13 Now therefore say that you are my sister, so that it may go well with me because of you, and my soul may live because of you.
14 And it came to pass, when Abram entered Egypt, that the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.
15 Pharaoh’s princes also saw her, and praised her before him; and the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house.
16 And he did good to Abram because of her; and he had sheep, oxen, donkeys, male servants, maidservants, donkeys, and camels.
17 But the Jehovah struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues, because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.
18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said to him, “What is this that you have done to me?” Why didn’t you declare to me that she was your wife?
19 Why did you say: She is my sister, putting me in the position of taking her as my wife? Now, therefore, here is your wife; she take it, and go.
20 Then Pharaoh gave command to his people concerning Abram; and they accompanied him, and his wife, with everything he had.
1 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, he and his wife, with all that he had, and Lot with him.
2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, silver, and gold.
3 And he returned on his journey from the Negev to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been before between Bethel and Ai,
4 to the place of the altar which he had made there before; and there he called upon Abram on the name of the Jehovah.
5 Lot, who was with Abram, also had sheep, cattle, and tents.
6 And the land was not enough for them to live together, because their possessions were many, and they could not live in the same place.
7 And there was a strife between the shepherds of Abram’s cattle and the herders of Lot’s cattle; and the Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.
8 Then Abram said to Lot, Let there be no quarrel between us two now, between my shepherds and your shepherds, for we are brothers.
9 Is not the whole earth before you? I beg you to depart from me. If you go to the left hand, I will go to the right; and if you go to the right, I will go to the left.
10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was all irrigated, like the garden of the Jehovah, like the land of Egypt in the direction of Zoar, before the Jehovah destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.
11 Then Lot chose for himself the entire plain of the Jordan; And Lot went towards the east, and they separated from each other.
12 Abram camped in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and he pitched his tents as far as Sodom.
13 But the men of Sodom were very wicked and sinners against the Jehovah.
14 And the Jehovah said to Abram, after Lot had departed from him, Lift up now your eyes, and look from the place where you are toward the north and the south, and the east and the west.
15 For all the land that you see, I will give to you and your descendants forever.
16 And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth; For if anyone can count the dust of the earth, your descendants will also be numbered.
17 Arise, go through the land along its length and its breadth; because I will give it to you.
18 So Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the oak forest of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Jehovah.
1 It came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goim,
2 that these made war against Bera king of Sodom, against Birsha king of Gomorrah, against Sinab king of Adma, against Shemeber king of Zeboim, and against the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
3 All these were gathered together in the valley of Siddim, which is the Salt Sea.
4 Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
5 And in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer came, and the kings who were on his side, and defeated the Rephaim in Ashtaroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shave Kiriathaim,
6 and the Horites in Mount Seir. , to the plain of Paran, which is next to the desert.
7 And they returned and came to En-mispat, which is Kadesh, and devastated all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who lived in Hazezontamar.
8 And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Adma, the king of Zeboim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar, went out and ordered battle against them in the valley of Siddim;
9 that is, against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against five.
10 And the valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and when the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah fled, some fell there; and the rest fled to the mountain.
11 And they took all the wealth of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and departed.
12 They also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who lived in Sodom, and his property, and they departed.
13 And one of those who escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who lived in the oak forest of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner, who were allies of Abram.
14 Abram heard that his relative was a prisoner, and he armed his servants, those born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and followed them to Dan.
15 And he fell upon them by night, he and his servants, and attacked them, and followed them to Hobah north of Damascus.
16 And he recovered all the property, and also Lot his relative and his property, and the women and other people.
17 When he was returning from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh, which is the Valley of the King.
18 Then Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the Most High God, brought out bread and wine;
19 and blessed him, saying, Blessed be Abram by the Most High God, creator of the heavens and the earth;
20 and blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand. And Abram gave him tithes of everything.
21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, Give me the people, and take the goods for yourself.
22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand to the Jehovah God Most High, creator of heaven and earth,
23 that from a thread to a shoe strap, I will take nothing of all that is yours, lest I say: I made Abram rich;
24 except only what the young men ate, and the portion of the men who went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre, who will take his portion.
1 After these things the word of the Jehovah came to Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram; I am your shield, and your reward will be exceedingly great.
2 And Abram said, Lord Jehovah, what will you give me, since I am childless, and the steward of my house is that Eliezer of Damascus?
3 Abram also said, See, you have not given me offspring, and behold, a slave born in my house will be my heir.
4 Then the word of the Jehovah came to him, saying, This man will not inherit you, but one of your sons will inherit you.
5 And he took him outside, and said to him, Look now at the heavens, and count the stars, if you can number them. And he said unto him, Thus shall thy descendants be.
6 And he believed the Jehovah, and it was counted to him as righteousness.
7 And he said to him, I am the Jehovah, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit.
8 And he said, Lord Jehovah, by what means shall I know that I shall inherit it?
9 And he said to him, Bring me a heifer of three years old, and a goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove also, and a young pigeon.
10 And he took all these, and he divided them in half, and laid each half one opposite the other; but he did not divide the birds.
11 And birds of prey descended on the dead bodies, and Abram drove them away.
12 But at sunset, sleep came upon Abram, and behold, the fear of great darkness fell upon him.
13 Then the Jehovah said to Abram, Be assured that your descendants will dwell in a foreign land, and will be slaves there, and will be oppressed four hundred years.
14 But also the nation whom they will serve, I will judge; and after this they will come out with great wealth.
15 And you will come to your fathers in peace, and you will be buried in a good old age.
16 And in the fourth generation they will return here; because the evil of the Amorites has not yet reached its height until now.
17 And it came to pass that as the sun set and it was already dark, a furnace was seen smoking, and a torch of fire passing between the divided animals.
18 On that day the Jehovah made a covenant with Abram, saying: To your descendants I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates;
19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Admonites,
20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaites,
21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.
1 Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children; and she had an Egyptian servant, whose name was Hagar.
2 Then Sarai said to Abram, You see that the Jehovah has made me barren; I beg you, then, to come to my servant; Maybe I will have children from her. And Abram heeded Sarai’s request.
3 And Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar, her Egyptian maid, after ten years that Abram had lived in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram, her husband, as a wife.
4 And he came to Hagar, and she conceived; and when he saw that he had conceived, he looked with contempt at his lady.
5 Then Sarai said to Abram, My disgrace be upon you; I gave you my servant as a wife, and seeing herself pregnant, she looks at me with contempt; May the Jehovah judge between you and me.
6 And Abram said to Sarai, Behold, your handmaid is in your hand; Do with her what seems good to you. And as Sarai grieved her, she fled from her presence.
7 And the angel of the Jehovah found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain that is on the road to Shur.
8 And he said to her, Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where do you come from, and where are you going? And she answered: I flee from Sarai my lady.
9 And the angel of the Jehovah said to her, Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.
10 The angel of the Jehovah also said to him: I will multiply your descendants so much that they will not be numbered because of the multitude.
11 And the angel of the Jehovah said to her, Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son, and you will call his name Ishmael, because the Jehovah has heard your affliction.
12 And he will be a fierce man; His hand will be against all, and the hand of all against him, and his brothers will dwell before all.
13 Then she called the name of the Jehovah who spoke with her: You are God who sees; for she said, Have I not also seen him here who sees me?
14 Therefore she called the well: Well of the Living-Who-Sees-Me. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 And Hagar bore a son to Abram, and she called Abram the name of the son that Hagar bore him, Ishmael.
16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.
1 Abram was ninety-nine years old when the Jehovah appeared to him and said, “I am the Almighty God; walk before me and be perfect.
2 And I will put my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you greatly.
3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God spoke to him, saying,
4 Behold, my covenant is with you, and you will be the father of many nations.
5 And your name will no longer be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham, because I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
6 And I will multiply you greatly, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come out of you.
7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your descendants after you throughout their generations, as a perpetual covenant, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
8 And I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land in which you dwell, all the land of Canaan for an everlasting inheritance; and I will be their God.
9 God said again to Abraham: As for you, you will keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.
10 This is my covenant, which you will keep between me and you and your descendants after you: Every male among you will be circumcised.
11 Therefore you will circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and you.
12 And from the age of eight days every male among you throughout your generations will be circumcised; the one born at home, and the one bought for money from any foreigner, who is not of your lineage.
13 He who is born in your house must be circumcised, and he who is bought with your money; and my covenant will be in your flesh for a perpetual covenant.
14 And the uncircumcised male, whoever has not circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; He has violated my covenant.
15 God also said to Abraham, You shall not call Sarai your wife Sarai, but her name shall be Sara.
16 And I will bless her, and I will also give you her son; yes, I will bless her, and she will become the mother of nations; kings of people will come from her.
17 Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a son be born to a man a hundred years old? And will Sara, now ninety years old, conceive?
18 And Abraham said to God, May Ishmael live before you.
19 God answered, Surely Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you will call his name Isaac; and I will establish my covenant with him as a perpetual covenant for his descendants after him.
20 And as for Ishmael, I have also heard you; behold, I will bless him, and cause him to be fruitful and multiply greatly; He will beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
21 But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you this time next year.
22 And he finished speaking with him, and God came up from being with Abraham.
23 Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all the servants born in his house, and all those bought with his money, every male among the servants of Abraham’s house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on that same day. , as God had told him.
24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin.
25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised.
26 On the same day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised.
27 And all the males of his house, the servant born in the house, and the one bought from abroad for money, were circumcised with him
1 Then the Jehovah appeared to him in the oak grove of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day.
2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, three men stood by him; and when he saw them, he ran out from the door of his tent to meet them, and fell down on the ground,
3 and said, Lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, I pray you, do not pass by your servant.
4 Now let some water be brought, and wash your feet; and lie down under a tree,
5 and I will bring a morsel of bread, and sustain your heart, and then you will pass over; for that is why you have passed by your servant. And they said: Do as you have said.
6 Then Abraham hurried to the tent to Sarah, and said to her, Take quickly three measures of fine flour, and knead it, and make bread baked under the embers.
7 And Abraham ran to the cows, and he took a young and good calf, and gave it to the servant, and he hastened to prepare it.
8 He also took butter and milk, and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stayed with them under the tree, and they ate.
9 And they said to him, Where is Sarah your wife? And he answered: Here in the store.
10 Then he said, I will surely return to you; And according to the time of life, behold, Sarah your wife will have a son. And Sara listened at the door of the tent, which was behind him.
11 And Abraham and Sarah were old, of advanced years; and Sara had already stopped the custom of women.
12 So Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am old shall I have pleasure, since my Lord is also old?
13 Then the Jehovah said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, Will it be true that I will give birth when I am old?
14 Is there anything difficult for God? At the appointed time I will return to you, and according to the time of life, Sarah will have a son.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I did not laugh; because she was afraid. And he said: It is not so, but you have laughed.
16 And the men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them, accompanying them.
17 And the Jehovah said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am going to do,
18 since Abraham will be a great and strong nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?
19 For I know that he will command his sons and his household after him to keep the way of the Jehovah, doing righteousness and justice, so that the Jehovah may bring upon Abraham what he has spoken concerning him.
20 Then the Jehovah said to him: Because the cry against Sodom and Gomorrah increases more and more, and their sin has become extremely serious,
21 I will now go down and see if they have completed their work according to the cry that has come to me; and if not, I will know.
22 And the men departed from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham was still before the Jehovah.
23 And Abraham came and said, Will you also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
24 Perhaps there are fifty righteous within the city: will you also destroy and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are within it?
25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, that you would cause the righteous to die with the wicked, and let the righteous be treated like the wicked; never do that. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?
26 Then the Jehovah said, If I find fifty righteous men in Sodom within the city, I will spare this whole place for their sake.
27 And Abraham replied and said, Behold, now I have begun to speak to my Lord, although I am dust and ashes.
28 Perhaps five of the fifty righteous will be missing; Will you destroy the entire city for those five? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I find there forty-five.
29 And he spoke to him again, and said, Perhaps forty will be found there. And he answered: I will not do it for the love of forty.
30 And he said, Let not my Lord be angry now, if I speak: perhaps thirty will be found there. And he said, I will not do it if I find thirty there.
31 And he said, Behold, now that I have undertaken to speak to my Lord: perhaps twenty will be found there. I will not destroy it, he replied, for the love of the twenty.
32 And he said again: Let not my Lord be angry now, if I speak but once: perhaps ten will be found there. I will not destroy it, he replied, for the love of the ten.
33 And the Jehovah departed, after he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.
1 So the two angels came to Sodom at evening; and Lot sat at the gate of Sodom. And when Lot saw them, he stood up to meet them, and bowed down to the ground,
2 and said, Now, my Lord’s, I beseech you, come to your servant’s house and lodge, and wash your feet; and in the morning you will arise and go on your way. And they answered: No, we will stay in the street tonight.
3 But he persisted with them very much, and they went with him, and entered his house; and he made them a feast, and he baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, all the people together, from the youngest to the oldest.
5 And they called to Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men that came to thee this night? Bring them out, so that we may know them.
6 Then Lot came out to them at the door, and closed the door behind him,
7 and said, I beseech you, my brothers, do not do such evil.
8 Behold, now I have two daughters who have not known a man; I will bring them out to you, and do with them as you see fit; Only do nothing to these men, since they came in the shadow of my roof.
9 And they answered: Get away there; And they added: This stranger has come to live among us, and will he become a judge? Now we will deal worse than them. And they did great violence to the man, to Lot, and approached to break the door.
10 Then the men stretched out their hands, and brought Lot into the house with them, and closed the door.
11 And they struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, from the least to the greatest, so that they labored searching for the door.
12 And the men said to Lot, Have you any more here? Sons-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and all that you have in the city, bring them out of this place;
13 For we are going to destroy this place, because the cry against them has risen before the Jehovah; therefore, Jehovah has sent us to destroy it.
14 Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to take his daughters, and said to them, Arise, leave this place; because Jehovah is going to destroy this city. But it seemed to his sons-in-law that he was mocking.
15 And at daybreak, the angels urged Lot, saying, Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, so that you may not perish in the punishment of the city.
16 And as he stood still, the men took hold of his hand, and of his wife’s hand, and of his two daughters’ hands, according to the mercy of the Jehovah toward him; and they took him out and put him outside the city.
17And when they had brought them out, they said, Escape for your life; do not look behind you, nor stop in all this plain; Escape to the mountain, lest you perish.
18 But Lot said to them, No, I pray you, my Lord’s.
19 Behold, now your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have shown me by giving me life; but I will not be able to escape to the mountain, lest evil overtake me and I die.
20 Behold, now this city is near to flee thither, which is small; let me escape there now (isn’t she small?), and I will save my life.
21 And she answered him, Behold, I have also received your supplication concerning this, and I will not destroy the city of which you have spoken.
22 Hurry, escape there; because I will be able to do nothing until you have arrived there. That is why the name of the city was called, Zoar.
23 The sun was rising over the land when Lot came to Zoar.
24 Then the Jehovah rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Jehovah out of heaven;
25 and he destroyed the cities, and all that plain, with all the inhabitants of those cities, and the fruit of the land.
26 Then Lot’s wife looked behind him and turned into a pillar of salt.
27 And Abraham went up in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Jehovah.
28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of that plain he looked; and behold, the smoke rose from the earth like the smoke of a furnace.
29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the destruction, laying waste the cities where Lot was.
30 But Lot went up from Zoar and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to stay in Zoar, and he and his two daughters lived in a cave.
31 Then the elder said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is no man left in the land who will come to us according to the custom of the whole land.
32 Come, let us give our father wine to drink, and sleep with him, and we will keep offspring from our father.
33 And they gave her father wine to drink that night, and the eldest came in, and she slept with her father; but he did not feel when she lay down, nor when she got up.
34 The next day the elder said to the younger, Behold, I slept last night with my father; Let us also give him wine to drink tonight, and go in and sleep with him, so that we may preserve offspring from our father.
35 And they gave his father wine to drink also that night, and the younger one got up and slept with him; but he did not notice when she went to bed, nor when she got up.
36 And Lot’s two daughters conceived by his father.
37 And the eldest gave birth to a son, and he called her name Moab, who is the father of the Moabites to this day.
38 The younger girl also gave birth to a son, and she called his name Ben-ammi, who is the father of the Ammonites to this day.
1 From there Abraham journeyed into the land of the Negev, and camped between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
2 And Abraham said of his wife Sarah, She is my sister. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, you are dead because of the wife whom you have taken, who is married to a husband.
4 But Abimelech had not come to her, and said, Lord, will you also kill the innocent?
5 Did he not say to me: She is my sister; and she also said: Is she my brother? With simplicity of my heart and cleanliness of my hands I have done this.
6 And God said to him in a dream: I also know that with the integrity of your heart you have done this; and I also stopped you from sinning against me, and so I did not allow you to touch her.
7 Now therefore he returns the wife to her husband; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live. And if you do not return it, he knows that you and all your people will surely die.
8 Then Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants, and spoke all these words in their ears; and the men feared greatly.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, What have you done to us? How have I sinned against you, who have brought such great sin upon me and upon my kingdom? What you should not have done you have done with me.
10 Abimelech also said to Abraham, What were you thinking, that you should do this?
11 And Abraham answered, Because I said to myself, Surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.
12 And indeed she is also my sister, my father’s daughter, but not my mother’s daughter, and I took her to wife.
13 And when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to him: This is the favor that you will do to me, that in all the places where we go, you will say of me: He is my brother.
14 Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and he restored to him Sarah his wife.
15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee; Live where it seems good to you.
16 And to Sarah he said, Behold, I have given a thousand pieces of silver to your brother; See that he is like a veil to the eyes of all who are with you, and to everyone; she thus she was vindicated.
17 Then Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his servants, and they had children.
18 For the Jehovah had completely closed every womb of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
1 The Jehovah visited Sarah, as he had said, and the Jehovah did to Sarah as he had spoken.
2 And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in her old age, at the time that God had told her.
3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.
4 And Abraham circumcised his eight-day-old son Isaac, as God had commanded him.
5 And Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born.
6 Then Sarah said, God has made me laugh, and whoever hears it will laugh with me.
7 And she added: Who would tell Abraham that Sarah would nurse her children? Well, I have given her a son in her old age.
8 And the child grew, and was weaned; And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
9 And Sarah saw that the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, was mocking her son Isaac.
10 Therefore she said to Abraham, Cast out this maidservant and her son, for the son of this maidservant shall not inherit with my son Isaac.
11 This saying seemed very serious to Abraham because of his son.
12 Then God said to Abraham: Do not think it is serious because of the boy and your maidservant; In everything that Sarah says to you, she hears her voice, because in Isaac your descendants will be called.
13 And I will also make a nation of the son of the maidservant, because he is your descendant.
14 Then Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread, and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and gave the boy to her, and sent her away. And she went out and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
15 And she ran out of water from the skin, and she threw the boy under a bush,
16 and she went and sat opposite, a bowshot’s distance away; for she said: I will not see when the boy dies. And when she sat down opposite, the boy raised his voice at her and cried.
17 And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said unto her, What hast thou, Hagar? Do not worry; because God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.
18 Arise, lift up the boy, and hold him in your hand, for I will make him a great nation.
19 Then God opened his eyes, and he saw a fountain of water; and he went and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.
20 And God was with the boy; and he grew up, and dwelt in the wilderness, and was a bowman.
21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife from the land of Egypt.
22 It came to pass at that same time that Abimelech, and Phicol, prince of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, God is with you in all that you do.
23 Now therefore swear to me here by God, that you will not fail me, nor my son, nor my grandson, but according to the goodness that I did to you, you will do to me, and to the land where you have lived.
24 And Abraham said, I will swear.
25 And Abraham rebuked Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech’s servants had taken from him.
26 And Abimelech said, I do not know who did this, nor did you make it known to me, nor have I heard of it to this day.
27 And Abraham took sheep and herds, and gave them to Abimelech; and they both made a pact.
28 Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock aside.
29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, What do these seven lambs mean, which you have set aside?
30 And he said, Thou shalt take these seven ewe lambs at my hand, that they may be a testimony unto me that I dug this well.
31 Therefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they both swore.
32 Thus they made a covenant in Beersheba; and Abimelech arose, and Phicol prince of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines.
33 And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the Jehovah, the everlasting God.
34 And Abraham dwelt in the land of the Philistines many days.
1 It came to pass after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am.
2 And he said, Take now your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.
3 And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his servants, and Isaac his son; and he cut wood for the burnt offering, and arose, and went to the place of which God told him.
4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place far away.
5 Then Abraham said to his servants, Wait here with the donkey, and I and the boy will go there and worship, and we will return to you.
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it on his son Isaac, and he took the fire and the knife in his hand; and they both went together.
7 Then Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, My father. And he answered: Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, God will provide himself with a lamb for a burnt offering, my son. And they went together.
9 And when they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there, and laid out the wood, and bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar on the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
11 Then the angel of the Jehovah cried to him from heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am.
12 And he said, Do not lay your hand on the boy, nor do anything to him; because I already know that you fear God, because you did not refuse me your son, your only one.
13 Then Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by its horns; And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place, The Jehovah will provide. Therefore it is said today: In the mountain of the Jehovah it will be provided.
15 And the angel of the Jehovah called to Abraham the second time from heaven,
16 and said, I have sworn by myself, says the Jehovah, that because you have done this, and have not withheld your son from me, your only son;
17 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven and like the sand that is on the seashore; and your descendants will possess the gates of her enemies.
18 In your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you obeyed my voice.
19 And Abraham returned to his servants, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt in Beersheba.
20 It came to pass after these things that it was reported to Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah also has borne children to Nahor your brother:
21 Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,
22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildas, Jidlaf and Bethuel.
23 And Bethuel was the father of Rebekah. These are the eight children that Milcah, of Abraham’s brother Nahor, bore.
24 And his concubine, whose name was Rheumah, also bore Theba, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
1 The life of Sarah was one hundred and twenty-seven years; So many were the years of Sara’s life.
2 And Sarah died in Kiriath-arba, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to mourn her.
3 And Abraham arose from his dead woman, and spoke to the children of Heth, saying,
4 I am a stranger and a stranger among you; Give me property for burial among you, and I will bury my dead from before me.
5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, and said unto him,
6 Hear us, our Lord; You are a prince of God among us; In the best of our tombs bury your dead; None of us will deny you her burial, nor prevent you from burying your dead.
7 And Abraham arose, and bowed down to the people of that land, to the children of Heth,
8 and spoke to them, saying, If it is your will that I bury my dead from before me, hear me, and intercede for me with Ephron son of Zohar,
9 to give me the cave of Machpelah, which is at the end of his inheritance; Let him give it to me for its fair price, for possession of a tomb among you.
10 This Ephron was among the sons of Heth; And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham, in the presence of the sons of Heth, of all who entered at the gate of his city, saying,
11 No, my Lord, hear me: I give you the inheritance, and I also give you the cave that is in her; In the presence of the children of my people I give it to you; Bury your dead.
12 Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land,
13 and answered Ephron in the presence of the people of the land, saying: But if it pleases you, please listen to me. I will give the price of the inheritance; Take it from me, and I will bury my dead in it.
14 Ephron answered Abraham, saying,
15 My Lord, listen to me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is this between you and me? So bury your dead.
16 Then Abraham agreed with Ephron, and Abraham weighed out to Ephron the money that he said, in the presence of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, of good sterling among merchants.
17 And the field of Ephron that was in Machpelah on the east of Mamre, the field with the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, and in all its surroundings, remained,
18 as Abraham’s property, in the presence of the sons of Heth and of all those who entered through the gate of the city.
19 After this Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.
20 And the field and the cave that was in it remained of Abraham, as a possession for burial, received from the children of Heth.
1 Abraham was already old, and well advanced in years; and the Jehovah had blessed Abraham in everything.
2 And Abraham said to one of his servants, the eldest of his house, who ruled over all that he had: Now put your hand under my thigh,
3 and I will swear to you by the Jehovah, the God of heaven and the God of the land, that you shall not take for my son a wife from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;
4 but you will go to my country and to my kindred, and you will take a wife for my son Isaac.
5 The servant answered him: Perhaps the woman will not want to come after me to this land. Shall your son then return to the land from which you came?
6 And Abraham said to him, Take care that you do not return to my son there.
7 Jehovah, God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred, and spoke to me and swore to me, saying, To your descendants I will give this land; He will send his angel before you, and you will bring a wife for my son from there.
8 And if the woman does not want to come after you, you will be free from this my oath; Just don’t return my son there.
9 Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him about this matter.
10 And the servant took ten camels of his master’s camels, and went away, taking all kinds of choice gifts from his master; and setting out, he came to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.
11 And he made the camels kneel outside the city, by a well of water, at the time of the evening, the time when the maidens go out to draw water.
12 And he said, O Jehovah, God of my Lord Abraham, grant me, I pray thee, a good meeting this day, and show mercy to my Lord Abraham.
13 Behold, I am at the fountain of water, and the daughters of the men of this city go out to draw water.
14 Let it be then that the maiden to whom I say, Let down your pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink, and she may answer, Drink, and I will also water your camels; May this be the one that you have destined for your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that you have shown mercy to my Lord.
15 And it came to pass, before he had finished speaking, that, behold, Rebekah, who had been born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her waterpot on her shoulder.
16 And the maiden was very beautiful in appearance, a virgin, whom no man had known; she which she descended to the fountain, and she filled the pitcher with it, and she returned.
17 Then the servant ran to her and said, Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink.
18 She answered, Drink, my Lord; and she hastened to lower her pitcher onto her hand, and she gave him to drink.
19 And when he had finished watering them, he said, I will also draw water for your camels, until they have finished drinking.
20 And he made haste, and emptied his pitcher into the basin, and ran again to the well to draw water, and drew for all the camels from it.
21 And the man was amazed at her, remaining silent, to know whether the Jehovah had prospered her journey or not.
22 And when the camels had finished drinking, she gave the man a gold earring weighing half a shekel, and two bracelets weighing ten,
23 and said, Whose daughter are you? Please tell me: is there a place in your father’s house where we can lodge?
24 And she answered, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.
25 And she added: There is also in our house straw and much fodder, and a place to rest.
26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Jehovah,
27 and said, Blessed be the Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld his mercy and his truth from my master, since the Jehovah has guided me on the way to the house of my brothers. love.
28 And the damsel ran and told these things in her mother’s house.
29 And Rebekah had a brother named Laban, who ran outside to the man, to the fountain.
30 And when she saw the earring and the bracelets in the hands of her sister, saying, Thus spoke that man to me, she came to him; and behold, he was with the camels by the fountain.
31 And she said to him, Come, blessed of the Jehovah; why are you out? I have prepared the house, and the place for the camels.
32 Then the man came home, and Laban untied the camels; and he gave them straw and fodder, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men who came with him.
33 And they set before him what to eat; but he said, I will not eat until I have spoken my message. And he said to him: Speak.
34 Then he said, I am Abraham’s servant.
35 And the Jehovah has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and he has given her sheep and herds, silver and gold, male and female servants, camels and donkeys.
36 And Sarah, my master’s wife, gave birth to a son in her old age to my Lord, who has given him everything she has.
37 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;
38 But you will go to my father’s house and to my relatives, and you will take a wife for my son.
39 And I said: Perhaps the woman will not want to follow me.
40 Then he answered me, The Jehovah, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you, and your way will prosper; and you will take a wife for my son from my family and from my father’s house.
41 Then you will be free from my oath, when you have come to my family; and if they do not give it to you, you will be free from my oath.
42 So I came to the fountain today and said, “Jehovah, God of my Lord Abraham, if you now prosper my way in which I walk,
43 behold, I am at the fountain of water; Let it be, then, that the maiden who goes out for water, to whom I say, Give me to drink, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher,
44 and she shall answer me, Drink thou, and I will also draw water for thy camels; Let this be the woman whom Jehovah appointed for my Lord son.
45 Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the fountain, and drew water; and I said to him: please give me something to drink.
46 And she quickly took down her pitcher from off her, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also. And I drank, and she also watered my camels.
47 Then I asked her, and said, Whose daughter are you? And she answered, Daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milca bore to him. Then she put an earring on her nose, and bracelets on her arms;
48 And I bowed down and worshiped the Jehovah, and blessed the Jehovah God of my Lord Abraham, who had guided me in the way of truth to take my Lord’s brother’s daughter for his son.
49 Now therefore, if you show mercy and truth to my Lord, declare it to me; and if not, declare it to me; and I will go to the right hand or to the left.
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, This has come from the Jehovah; We cannot speak bad or good to you.
51 Behold Rebekah before you; Take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Jehovah has said.
52 When Abraham’s servant heard his words, he bowed down to the ground before Jehovah.
53 And he brought out silver jewels, and gold jewels, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; He also gave precious things to his brother and his mother.
54 And he and the men who came with him ate and drank, and slept; And rising early in the morning, he said, Send me my Lord.
55 Then his brother and his mother answered, Let the maiden wait with us for at least ten days, and then she will go.
56 And he said to them, Do not stop me, since Jehovah has prospered my way; Send me away to go to my Lord.
57 Then they answered, Let us call the damsel and ask her.
58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Will you go with this man? And she answered: Yes, I will go.
59 Then they let go Rebekah her sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men.
60And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, Our sister, be the mother of thousands of thousands, and let your descendants possess the gate of their enemies.
61 Then Rebekah and her maids arose, and mounted the camels, and followed the man; and the servant took Rebekah and departed.
62 And Isaac came from the well of the Living-Who-Sees-Me; because he lived in the Negev.
63 And Isaac had gone out to meditate in the field at evening; And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, the camels were coming.
64 Rebekah also lifted up her eyes, and she saw Isaac, and she got off the camel;
65 for she had asked the servant: Who is this man who is coming across the field towards us? And the servant had answered: This is my Lord. She then took the veil, and covered herself.
66 Then the servant told Isaac everything he had done.
67 And Isaac brought her to the tent of his mother Sarah, and he took Rebekah to wife, and loved her; and Isaac was comforted after the death of his mother.
1 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah,
2 and she bore him Zimram, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
3 And Jokshan begat Sheba and Dedan; and the sons of Dedan were Ashurim, Letusim and Leumim.
4 And the sons of Midian: Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida and Elda. All these were sons of Keturah.
5 And Abraham gave everything he had to Isaac.
6 But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and he sent them away from his son Isaac, while he was alive, toward the east, to the eastern land.
7 And these were the days that Abraham lived: one hundred and seventy-five years.
8 And Abraham gave up the spirit, and Abraham died in good old age, old and full of years, and was joined to his people.
9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is opposite Mamre,
10 a field that Abraham bought from the children of Heth; There Abraham was buried, and his wife Sarah.
11 And it came to pass, after Abraham was dead, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well of the Living-Who-Sees-Me.
12 These are the descendants of Ishmael son of Abraham, to whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, gave birth;
13 These then are the names of Ishmael’s sons, named in the order of his birth: Ishmael’s firstborn, Nebaioth; then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
14 Misma, Duma, Massa,
15 Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphis and Kedema.
16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are his names, by their towns and by their camps; twelve princes by their families.
17 And these were the years of Ishmael’s life, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed out the spirit Ishmael, and died, and was joined to his people.
18 And they dwelt from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt, coming to Assyria; and he died in the presence of all his brothers.
19 These are the descendants of Isaac the son of Abraham: Abraham begat Isaac,
20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took to wife Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Padan-aram, sister of Laban the Aramean.
21 And Isaac prayed to the Jehovah for his wife, who was barren; and the Jehovah accepted him, and his wife Rebekah conceived.
22 And the children fought within her; and she said: If so, why do I live? And she went to inquire of the Jehovah;
23 And the Jehovah said unto him, There are two nations in thy bosom, And two peoples shall be divided from thy bowels; One people will be stronger than the other people, And the older will serve the younger.
24 When her days for giving birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first one came out, blond, and he was all hairy like a coat; and they called his name Esau.
26 Then his brother came out, his hand caught in Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.
27 And the children grew up, and Esau was skilled in hunting, a man of the field; But Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents.
28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he ate of his game; but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 And Jacob cooked porridge; And Esau returning from the field, tired,
30 said to Jacob, Please give me this red stew to eat, for I am very tired. Therefore his name was called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day your birthright.
32 Then Esau said, Behold, I am going to die; What purpose, then, will my birthright be of use to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day. And he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and arose and departed. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
