1 Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 Will a man benefit God? On the contrary, a wise man is profitable for himself.
3 Is the Almighty pleased that you are justified, Or is it profitable that you make your ways perfect?
4 Does he punish you, Or does he come to judgment with you, because of your piety?
5 Indeed your malice is great, And your wickednesses have no end.
6 Because you took a pledge from your brothers without cause, And you stripped the naked of their clothes.
7 You gave no water to drink to the weary, And you withheld bread from the hungry.
8 But the wealthy man had the land, and the distinguished man lived in it.
9 You sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless were broken.
10 Therefore there are snares around you, And sudden fear troubles you;
11 Or darkness, so that you do not see, And abundance of water covers you.
12 Is not God high in the heavens? Look how lofty the stars are, how high they are.
13 And will you say, What does God know? How will he judge him through the darkness?
14 The clouds surrounded him, and he does not see; And through the circuit of heaven he walks.
15 Do you want to follow the ancient path trodden by wicked men,
16 who were cut off before their time, whose foundation was like a poured out river?
17 They said to God: Depart from us. And what had the Almighty done to them?
18 He had filled his houses with good things. But let their advice be far from me.
19 The righteous will see and rejoice; And the innocent will mock them, saying:
20 Our adversaries were destroyed, and the fire consumed what was left of them.
21 Return now to friendship with him, and you will have peace; And for that you’ll be OK.
22 Now take the law from his mouth, and put his words in your heart.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up; You will remove affliction from your tent;
24 You will have more gold than land, And gold from Ophir like stones from streams;
25 The Almighty will be your defense, And you will have plenty of silver.
26 For then you will delight in the Almighty, And lift up your face to God.
27 You will pray to him, and he will hear you; And you will pay your votes.
28 You will also determine one thing, and it will be firm for you, And light will shine on your ways.
29 When they are brought low, you will say: There will be exaltation; And God will save the humble-eyed.
30 He will free the innocent, And by the cleanliness of your hands he will be delivered.
1 Job answered and said,
2 Today also I will speak bitterly; Because my wound is more serious than my groaning.
3 Who would give me the knowledge where to find God! I would go to his chair.
4 I would plead my case before him, And fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would know what he answered me, And I would understand what he told me.
6 Would he contend with me with great strength? No; Before he would attend to me.
7 There the righteous would reason with him; And I would escape forever from my judge.
8 Behold, I will go to the east, and will not find it; And to the west, and I will not perceive it;
9 If he shows his power to the north, I will not see it; To the south he will hide, and I will not see him.
10 But he knows my way; He will test me, and I will come forth as gold.
11 My feet have followed his footsteps; I kept the way from him, and did not depart.
12 From the commandment of his lips I have never separated; I kept the words from his mouth more than my food.
13 But if he determines a thing, who will change it? His soul desired, and did.
14 He, therefore, will finish what he has determined for me; And many things like these are in it.
15 Therefore I am terrified at his presence; When I consider it, I tremble because of it.
16 God has enervated my heart, And the Almighty has troubled me.
17 Why was I not cut off before the darkness, Nor was my face covered with darkness?
1 Since the times are not hidden from the Almighty, why do not those who know him see his days?
2 They trespass the boundaries, They steal the cattle, and feed them.
3 They take away the orphans’ donkeys, and take the widow’s ox as a pledge.
4 They drive the needy out of the way, And all the poor of the land hide.
5 Behold, like wild donkeys in the desert, They go out to their work early to steal; The desert is maintenance for his children.
6 In the field they reap their grass, And the wicked gather another’s vineyard.
7 They make the naked sleep without clothes, Without having cover against the cold.
8 They get wet with the rains from the mountains, And they embrace the rocks for lack of shelter.
9 They take away the breasts of the orphans, And from the poor they take the pledge.
10 They make the naked go without clothing, And they take the sheaves from the hungry.
11 Within its walls they squeeze the oil, They tread the winepresses, and they die of thirst.
12 From the city the dying groan, And the souls of the mortally wounded cry out, But God does not answer his prayer.
13 They are those who, rebelling against the light, Never knew its ways, Nor were they in its paths.
14 In the light the slayer rises; He kills the poor and the needy, And at night he is like a thief.
15 The eye of the adulterer is waiting for the night, Saying, No one will see me; And he hides his face from him.
16 In the darkness they undermine the houses That they marked for themselves by day; They don’t know the light.
17 For the morning is like the shadow of death to all of them; If they are known, terrors of the shadow of death take them.
18 They flee as swift as a stream of waters; His portion is cursed on the earth; They will not walk along the path of the vineyards
19 Drought and heat take away the waters of snow; So also Sheol to sinners.
20 The mother’s womb will forget them; the worms will feel sweetness from them; There will be no more memory of them, And the wicked will be broken like a tree.
21 He afflicted the barren woman, who did not conceive, and he did no good to the widow.
22 But she advanced the strong by her power; Once she gets up, none of them are sure of life.
23 He gives them security and confidence; His eyes are upon their ways.
24 They were exalted a little, but they disappear, And they are brought low like all the rest; They will be shut up and cut off like heads of grain.
25 And if not, who will deny me now, Or will he reduce my words to nothing?
1 Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,
2 Lordship and fear are with him; He makes peace in his heights.
3 Do they have the number of his armies? On whom is not his light?
4 How then can a man justify himself toward God? Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean?
5 Behold, not even the moon itself will be bright, Nor are the stars clean in his sight;
6 How much less man, who is a worm, And the son of man, also a worm?
1 Job answered and said,
2 How have you helped him who has no power? How have you protected the arm without strength?
3 In what have you advised him who has no knowledge, And what fullness of understanding have you made known?
4 To whom have you spoken words, And from whom is the spirit that proceeds from you?
5 The shadows tremble in the depths, The seas and all that dwells in them.
6 Sheol is open before him, and Abaddon has no covering.
7 He spreads the north over emptiness, He hangs the earth over nothing.
8 He binds the waters in his clouds, And the clouds do not break under them.
9 He covers the face of his throne, and spreads his cloud over it.
10 He set a limit to the surface of the waters, to the end of light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble, And are terrified at his rebuke.
12 He stirs up the sea with his power, And with his understanding he smites their arrogance.
13 His spirit adorned the heavens; His hand created the twisting serpent.
14 Behold, these things are only the edges of his ways; And how faint is the whisper we have heard from him! But the thunder of his power, who can understand it?
1 Job resumed his speech, and said:
2 As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has embittered my soul,
3 As long as my soul is in me, and there is the breath of God in my nostrils,
4 My lips will not speak iniquity, Nor will my tongue utter deceit.
5 It will never come to pass that I justify you; Until I die, I will not take away my integrity.
6 I have hold of my righteousness, and I will not give it up; My heart will not reproach me all my days.
7 Let my enemy be like the wicked, and my adversary like the wicked.
8 For what is the hope of the wicked, no matter how much he has stolen, when God takes his life?
9 Will God hear his cry When tribulation comes upon him?
10 Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times?
11 I will teach you about the hand of God; I will not hide what is with the Almighty.
12 Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then have you become so completely vain?
13 This is the portion of the wicked man with God, and the inheritance that the violent will receive from the Almighty:
14 If his children are multiplied, they will be for the sword; And his little ones will not be satisfied with bread.
15 Those who remain of him will be buried in death, and his widows will not mourn them.
16 Although I gather silver like dust, And prepare clothing like mud;
17 He will have prepared it, but the righteous will be clothed, And the innocent will distribute the silver.
18 He built his house like a moth, And like a bower that the keeper made.
19 Rico goes to bed, but for the last time; He will open his eyes, and he will have nothing.
20 Terrors will take hold of him like waters; The whirlwind will snatch it away at night.
21 He raises the windshield to him, and goes away; And a storm will take him away from his place.
22 Therefore God will take his burden on him, and will not forgive; What will he do to escape from his hand?
23 They will clap their hands over him, And from his place they will hiss at him.
1 Surely silver has its veins, And gold a place where it is refined.
2 Iron is taken from dust, And copper is melted from stone.
3 They put an end to darkness, And examine everything perfectly, The stones that are in darkness and in the shadow of death.
4 They open mines far from the inhabited, In forgotten places, where the foot does not pass. They are suspended and balanced, far from other men.
5 Bread is born from the earth, and beneath it it is as if turned into fire.
6 There is a place whose stones are sapphire, and whose dust is gold.
7 A path that no bird has ever known, nor has the vulture’s eye seen it;
8 Fierce animals never trod on it, nor did a lion pass through it.
9 She put her hand on the flint, And she overthrew the mountains at their roots.
10 He cut rivers from her rocks, and her eyes saw all that was precious.
11 She stopped the rivers at their source, And she brought to light what was hidden.
12 But where will wisdom be found? Where is the place of intelligence?
13 Man does not know his worth, Nor is he found in the land of the living.
14 The abyss says: It is not in me; And the sea said: Not even with me.
15 It will not be given for gold, nor will its price be a weight of silver.
16 She cannot be appreciated with Ophir gold, Nor with precious onyx, nor with sapphire.
17 Gold will not be equal to it, nor diamond, Nor will it be exchanged for jewelry of fine gold.
18 There will be no mention of coral or pearls; Wisdom is better than precious stones.
19 The Ethiopian topaz will not be equal to it; It cannot be appreciated with fine gold.
20 Where then will wisdom come from? And, where is the place for the intelligence?
21 For it is hidden from the eyes of every living person, and hidden from every bird of the air.
22 Abaddon and death said: We have heard the fame of him with our ears.
23 God understands her way, And knows her place.
24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and he sees everything under the heavens.
25 By giving weight to the wind, And setting the waters by measure;
26 When he gave law to the rain, and led to the lightning of thunder,
27 Then he saw it, and he manifested it; He prepared it and discovered it too.
28 And he said to the man, Behold, the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and the turning away from evil is understanding.
1 Job resumed his speech and said:
2 Who would return to me as in the months past, As in the days when God preserved me,
3 When he made his lamp shine on my head, By whose light I walked in the darkness;
4 As I was in the days of my youth, When the favor of God watched over my tent;
5 When the Almighty was still with me, and my children were around me;
6 When I washed my steps with milk, And the stone poured rivers of oil on me!
7 When I went out to the gate for judgment, and had my seat prepared in the square,
8 The young men saw me and hid; And the elders rose up and stood.
9 The princes stopped his words; They put their hand over his mouth.
10 The voice of the rulers was silenced, and their tongues clung to the roof of their mouths.
11 The ears that heard me called me blessed, and the eyes that saw me bore witness to me,
12 For I delivered the poor who cried, And the orphan who had no helper.
13 The blessing of him who was about to be lost came upon me, And I gave joy to the heart of the widow.
14 I clothed myself with righteousness, and it covered me; My righteousness was like a cloak and a diadem.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame.
16 To the needy he was a father, and of the cause that I did not understand, he informed me diligently;
17 And he broke the fangs of the wicked, and made the prey loose from his teeth.
18 I said: In my nest I will die, And like sand I will multiply my days.
19 My root was open by the waters, and the dew remained on my branches.
20 My honor was renewed in me, and my bow was strengthened in my hand.
21 They listened to me, and waited, And kept silent at my advice.
22 They did not reply after my word, and my reason poured out upon them.
23 They waited for me like the rain, And they opened their mouths like the latter rain.
24 If I laughed with them, they did not believe it; And they did not dim the light of my face.
25 I qualified their way, and I sat among them as their leader; And he dwelt like a king in the army, Like one who comforts those who mourn.
1 But now those younger than I laugh at me, whose fathers I would disdain to put with the dogs of my cattle.
2 And of what use would even the strength of his hands be to me? They have no strength.
3 Because of poverty and hunger they walked alone; They fled to solitude, to a dark, desolate and deserted place.
4 They gathered hollyhocks among the bushes, And juniper roots to keep warm.
5 They were thrown out from among the crowds, and everyone shouted after them as after a thief.
6 They lived in the ravines of the streams, in the caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
7 They roared among the bushes, And gathered under the thorns.
8 Sons of vile, and nameless men, Lower than the earth itself.
9 And now I am mocked by him, And I serve as a proverb to them.
10 They abhor me, they turn away from me, And they have not withheld their saliva from my face.
11 Because God loosed the rope from him, and he afflicted me, Therefore they rioted before my face.
12 On the right hand the mob rose up; They pushed my feet, And prepared paths of destruction against me.
13 They ruined my path, They took advantage of my destruction, And there was no helper against them.
14 They came as if through a wide gate, They revolted over my calamity.
15 Troubles have come upon me; They fought my honor like a wind, And my prosperity passed away like a cloud.
16 And now my soul is poured out in me; Days of affliction overtake me.
17 The night bores into my bones, And the pains that gnaw at me do not rest.
18 Violence deforms my clothing; It girds me like the collar of my tunic.
19 He brought me down to the ground, and I am like dust and ashes.
20 I cry to you, and you do not hear me; I show up, and you don’t attend to me.
21 You have become cruel to me; With the power of your hand you pursue me.
22 You lifted me above the wind, you made me ride on it, And you dissolved my substance.
23 For I know that you lead me to death, And to the house determined for every living person.
24 But he will not stretch out his hand against the tomb; Will the buried cry out when he breaks them?
25 Did I not weep for the afflicted? And my soul, is it not grieved over the needy?
26 When I expected good, then evil came; And when I expected light, darkness came.
27 My bowels are troubled and do not rest; Days of affliction have overtaken me.
28 I walk blackened, and not from the sun; I have stood up in the congregation, and cried out.
29 I have become a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches.
30 My skin has turned black and falls off, And my bones burn with heat.
31 My harp is changed into mourning, And my flute into the voice of mourners.
1 I made a covenant with my eyes; How then was I to look at a virgin?
2 For what reward would God give me from above, And what inheritance will the Almighty from on high?
3 Is there no destruction for the wicked, and alienation for those who do iniquity?
4 Does he not see my ways, And does he count all my steps?
5 If I have walked falsely, And if my foot has been quick to deceive,
6 May God weigh me in the scales of justice, And he will know my integrity.
7 If my steps have strayed from the path, If my heart has gone behind my eyes, And if something has clung to my hands,
8 Let me sow, and another eat, And let my sowing be uprooted.
9 If my heart was deceived about a woman, And if I was lurking at my neighbor’s door,
10 I grind my wife for another, And others will bow down over her.
11 For it is evil and iniquity That judges must punish.
12 For it is fire that would devour even Abaddon, and consume all my possessions.
13 If I had despised the right of my male and female servants, when they contended with me,
14 What would I do when God arises? And when he asked, what would I answer?
15 He who made me in the womb, did he not make him? And did not one himself arrange us in the womb?
16 If I hindered the contentment of the poor, And caused the widow’s eyes to fail;
17 If I ate my morsel alone, And the orphan did not eat of it
18 (For from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And from my mother’s womb I was a widow’s guide);
19 If I have seen anyone perish without clothing, And the needy without shelter;
20 If I was not blessed by his loins, and warmed by the fleece of my sheep;
21 If I raised my hand against the orphan, Even though I saw that they helped me at the door;
22 May my back fall from my shoulder, And the bone of my arm be broken.
23 For I feared the punishment of God, Against whose majesty I would have no power.
24 If I put my hope in gold, And said to gold, You are my trust;
25 If I rejoiced that my riches multiplied, And that my hand found much;
26 If I have looked at the sun when it shone, Or at the moon when it was beautiful,
27 And my heart was secretly deceived, And my mouth kissed my hand;
28 This would also be judged evil; Because he would have denied the sovereign God.
29 If I rejoiced in the destruction of him who hated me, And rejoiced when he found evil in him
30 (I did not even give up my tongue to sin, Asking for a curse for his soul);
31 Unless my servants said, Who has not been satisfied with his flesh?
32 (The stranger did not spend the night outside; My doors I opened to the traveler);
33 If I covered my transgressions like a man, Hiding my iniquity in my bosom,
34 Because I was afraid of the great multitude, And the contempt of the families made me afraid, And I kept silent, and did not go out from my door;
35 If only someone would listen to me! Behold, my confidence is that the Almighty will testify for me, Even though my adversary sues me.
36 Surely I would carry him on my shoulder, And he would gird him on me like a crown.
37 I would tell him the number of my steps, And as a prince I would present myself before him.
38 If my land cries out against me, And all its furrows weep;
39 If I ate its substance without money, Or afflicted the soul of its owners,
40 Instead of wheat, thistles grew to me, And thorns instead of barley. This is where Job’s words end.
1 These three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in their own eyes.
2 Then Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was enraged against Job; He burned with anger, because he justified himself rather than God.
3 He also burned with anger against his three friends, because they could not find an answer, although they had condemned Job.
4 And Elihu had waited for Job in the dispute, because the others were older than him.
5 But when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouths of those three men, he became angry.
6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzzite answered, and said, I am young, and you are old; Therefore, I have been afraid, and I have feared to declare my opinion to you.
7 I said: The days will speak, And the multitude of years will declare wisdom.
8 Surely there is spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty makes him understand.
9 Those who are old are not wise, Nor do the elderly understand the law.
10 Therefore I said, Listen to me; I will also declare my wisdom.
11 Behold, I have waited for your reasons, I have listened to your arguments, While you searched for words.
12 I have paid attention to you, and behold, there is none of you who reproaches Job, and answers his words.
13 Lest you say, We have found wisdom; God defeats him, not man.
14 Now Job did not direct his words against me, nor will I answer him with your reasons.
15 They were terrified, they answered no more; Their reasoning went away.
16 So I waited, but they did not speak; Rather, they remained silent and did not respond further.
17 Therefore I will also answer my part; I too will declare my judgment.
18 For I am full of words, And the spirit within me urges me.
19 Truly my heart is like wine that has no vent, And it breaks like new wineskins.
20 So I will speak and breathe; I will open my lips, and I will respond.
21 Now I will not be a respecter of persons, Nor will I use flattering titles with anyone.
22 Because I do not know how to speak flattery; Otherwise my Maker would soon consume me
1 Therefore, Job, hear now my words, And listen to all my words.
2 Behold, I will now open my mouth, and my tongue will speak in my throat.
3 My reasons will declare the uprightness of my heart, And what my lips know, they will speak truthfully.
4 The spirit of God made me, And the breath of the Almighty gave me life.
5 Answer me if you can; Order your words, stand up.
6 Here I am in the place of God, according to your saying; I was also formed from clay.
7 Behold, my terror will not terrify you, Nor will my hand be heavy upon you.
8 Truly you said in my ears, And I heard the voice of your words saying:
9 I am clean and without blemish; I am innocent, and there is no evil in me.
10 Behold, he sought reproaches against me, And he counts me as his enemy;
11 He put my feet in the stocks, And he watched all my paths.
12 Behold, in this you have not spoken rightly; I will answer you that God is greater than man.
13 Why do you contend against him? Because he doesn’t account for any of his reasons.
14 However, in one or two ways God speaks; But man does not understand.
15 By sleep, in a night vision, When sleep falls on men, When they fall asleep on the bed,
16 Then He reveals to the ears of men, And points out His advice to them,
17 To remove a man from his work, And to turn away from male pride.
18 He will restrain his soul from the grave, and his life from perishing by the sword.
19 Also on his bed he is punished With severe pain in all his bones,
20 That makes his life hate bread, And his soul soft food.
21 His flesh faints, so that he is not seen, and his bones, which were not seen before, appear.
22 His soul draws near to the grave, and his life to those who cause death.
23 If he had some highly chosen eloquent mediator near him, Let him announce to man his duty;
24 Let him tell him that God had mercy on him, That he saved him from going down to the grave, That he found redemption;
25 His flesh will be more tender than that of the child, he will return to the days of his youth.
26 He will pray to God, and he will love him, And he will see his face with joy; And he will restore to man his righteousness.
27 He looks upon men; and whoever says, I have sinned and perverted what is right, and he has not profited me,
28 God will redeem his soul so that he does not go to the grave, and his life will be seen in light.
29 Behold, God does all these things two and three times with man,
30 to separate his soul from the grave, and to illuminate him with the light of the living.
31 Listen, Job, and hear me; Be silent, and I will speak.
32 If you have reasons, answer me; Speak, because I want to justify you.
33 And if not, listen to me; Hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.
1 Furthermore Elihu said:
2 Hear, ye wise men, my words; And you, learned men, pay attention to me.
3 For the ear tastes words, As the palate tastes what one eats.
4 Let us choose judgment for ourselves, Let us know among ourselves what is good.
5 For Job has said, I am righteous, and God has taken away my right.
6 Should I lie against my reason? Painful is my wound without having committed a transgression.
7 What man is there like Job, Who drinks scorn like water,
8 And he keeps company with those who do iniquity, And he walks with evil men?
9 For he has said, It will profit a man nothing to conform his will to God.
10 Therefore, men of understanding, hear me: Far be it from God to impiety, and far from the Almighty to be iniquity.
11 For he will repay a man according to his work, and will reward him according to his way.
12 Yes, indeed, God will not do injustice, And the Almighty will not pervert justice.
13 Who visited the earth for him? And who put the whole world in order?
14 If he would set his heart upon man, and thus gather his spirit and his breath,
15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust.
16 If therefore there is understanding in you, hear this; Listen to the voice of my words.
17 Will he who hates judgment rule? And will you condemn the one who is so righteous?
18 Will it be said to the king: Perverse; And to the princes: Impious?
19 How much less to him who is no respecter of princes. Neither does he respect the rich more than the poor, because they are all the work of his hands?
20 In a moment they will die, And at midnight the people will riot, and pass away, And the mighty will be taken away without a hand.
21 For his eyes are on the ways of man, and he sees all his steps.
22 There is no darkness or shadow of death Where those who do evil hide.
23 Therefore he does not burden a man more than is just, so that he may go to God in judgment.
24 He will break down the strong without inquiry, And he will cause others to stand in his place.
25 Therefore he will make their works known, When he overthrows them in the night, and they are broken.
26 He will strike them like evil ones In a place where they will be seen;
27 Because they thus turned away from him, And considered none of his ways,
28 Making the cry of the poor come before him, And let him hear the cry of the needy.
29 If he gives rest, who will disturb? If he hides his face from it, who will look at it? This about a nation, and the same about a man;
30 Making the wicked man not reign For the vexations of the people.
31 Surely it is fitting that one should say to God: I have already borne punishment, I will offend no more;
32 Teach me what I do not see; If I did wrong, I won’t do it again.
33 Should that be according to your opinion? He will reward you, now you refuse, now you accept, and not me; If not, say what you know.
34 The intelligent men will say with me, And the wise man who hears me:
35 That Job does not speak with wisdom, And that his words are not with understanding.
36 I desire that Job be thoroughly tested, Because of his responses similar to those of wicked men.
37 For he added rebellion to his sin; He claps his hands against us, And against God he multiplies his words.
1 Elihu continued his reasoning and said,
2 Do you think that what you said is right, ‘I am more righteous than God?’
3 For you said: What advantage will I get from it? Or what benefit will I have if I have not sinned?
4 I will answer you reasons, And your companions with you.
5 Look to the heavens, and see, And consider that the clouds are higher than you.
6 If you sin, what will you have achieved against him? And if your rebellions multiply, what will you do to them?
7 If you are righteous, what will you give him? Or what will he receive from your hand?
8 Your wickedness will harm a man like you, and your righteousness will profit the son of man.
9 Because of the multitude of violence they cry out, And they mourn for the might of the great.
10 And no one says, Where is God my Maker, Who gives songs in the night,
11 Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, And makes us wiser than the birds of the air?
12 There they will cry, and he will not hear, Because of the pride of the wicked.
13 Surely God will not listen to vanity, Nor will the Almighty regard it.
14 How much less when you say you don’t pay attention to him? The cause is before him; therefore wait for him.
15 But now, because in his anger he does not punish, Nor inquire rigorously,
16 Therefore Job opens his mouth in vain, And multiplies words without wisdom.
1 Elihu added and said,
2 Wait a little while, and I will teach you; Because I still have reasons in defense of God.
3 I will take my knowledge from afar, And I will attribute justice to my Maker.
4 For truly my words are not a lie; With you is he who is complete in his concepts.
5 Behold, God is great, but he does not reject anyone; He is mighty in strength of wisdom.
6 He will not grant life to the wicked, But to the afflicted he will give his right.
7 He will not turn his eyes away from the righteous; But with kings he will enthrone them forever, And they will be exalted.
8 And if they be caught in fetters, And bound in the cords of affliction,
9 He will make known to them their work, And that their transgressions prevailed.
10 He also awakens their ears to correction, And he tells them to turn from iniquity.
11 If they listen and serve him, their days will end in prosperity, and their years in happiness.
12 But if they do not listen, they will be put to the sword, And they will perish without wisdom.
13 But the hypocrites in heart store up wrath for themselves, And will not cry out when he binds them.
14 Their soul will perish in their youth, and his life among the Sodomites.
15 He will deliver the poor from his poverty, And in affliction he will awaken his ear.
16 He also will remove you from the mouth of trouble To a spacious place, free from all trouble, And he will prepare a table full of fat for you.
17 But you have filled the judgment of the wicked, Instead of upholding judgment and righteousness.
18 Therefore he fears, lest in his wrath he take you away with a blow, whom you cannot take away from you with a great ransom.
19 Will he value your riches, gold, or all the forces of power?
20 Do not long for the night, When people disappear from their place.
21 Beware, do not turn to iniquity; For this you chose rather than affliction.
22 Behold, God is exalted in his power; What teacher is like him?
23 Who has prescribed his way? And who will say to him: You have done wrong?
24 Remember to magnify his work, Which men behold.
25 All men see her; The man looks at her from afar.
26 Behold, God is great, and we do not know him, nor can we trace his years.
27 He attracts the drops of water, As the vapor is transformed into rain,
28 Which the clouds distill, Dripping abundantly on men.
29 Who can understand the extent of the clouds, And the loud noise of his dwelling?
30 Behold, his light spreads upon him, and covers the depths of the sea with it.
31 Although by these means he punishes the people, He gives sustenance to the multitude.
32 With the clouds he hides the light, And commands it not to shine, interposing them.
33 The thunder declares his indignation, And the tempest declares his wrath against iniquity.
1 Therefore my heart also trembles, And leaps from its place.
2 Listen carefully to the loud noise of his voice, and to the sound that comes out of his mouth.
3 He directs it under all the heavens, and the light from it to the ends of the earth.
4 After her the sound roars, He thunders with a majestic voice; And even if his voice is heard, he does not stop them.
5 God thunders marvelously with his voice; He does great things that we do not understand.
6 For to the snow he says: He descends to the earth; Also to the drizzle, and the torrential downpours.
7 Thus he makes every man withdraw, So that all men may recognize his work.
8 The beasts enter his hiding place, and remain in his dwellings.
9 From the south comes the whirlwind, And the cold of the north winds.
10 By the breath of God ice is given, And the wide waters freeze.
11 By watering he also dissipates the dense cloud, and with his light he scatters the fog.
12 Likewise by his plans the clouds are stirred around, To do on the face of the world, On the earth, what he commands them.
13 Sometimes for a scourge, sometimes for his land’s sake, sometimes for mercy he will make them come.
14 Listen to this, Job; Stop, and consider the wonders of God.
15 Do you know how God puts them in concert, And makes the light of his cloud shine?
16 Have you known the differences of the clouds, The wonders of the Perfect in wisdom?
17 Why are your clothes warm When he calms the earth with the south wind?
18 Did you stretch out the heavens with him, Firm as a molten mirror?
19 Show us what we are to say to him; Because we cannot organize our ideas because of the darkness.
20 Will it be necessary to tell him when I speak? No matter how much a man reasons, he will remain as if abyssed.
21 But now you can no longer look at the splendid light in the heavens, After the wind passes and cleanses them,
22 The golden light comes from the north. In God there is a terrible majesty.
23 He is Almighty, whom we cannot reach, great in power; And in judgment and in a multitude of righteousness he will not afflict.
24 Therefore men will fear him; He does not esteem anyone who believes in his own heart to be wise.
1 Then the LORD answered Job out of a whirlwind, and said,
2 Who is this that darkens counsel With words without wisdom?
3 Now gird your loins like a man; I will ask you, and you will answer me.
4 Where were you when I founded the earth? Let me know, if you have intelligence.
5 Who ordered his measurements, if you know? Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 On what are its bases founded? Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When all the morning stars praised, And all the children of God rejoiced?
8 Who enclosed the sea with doors, When it poured out of its bosom,
9 When I made clouds its garment, And darkness for its belt,
10 And I established my decree upon it, I set doors and bars for it,
11 And I said: You will come this far, and you will not go further, And there will the pride of your waves stop?
12 Have you commanded the morning in your days? Have you shown the dawn its place,
13 That it may occupy the ends of the earth, and that the wicked may be shaken out of it?
14 Then she changes her appearance like clay under her seal, And she becomes like a garment;
15 But the light of the wicked is taken away from them, and her exalted arm is broken.
16 Have you gone to the fountains of the sea, and searched the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you, And have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18 Have you considered the breadths of the earth? Declare if you know all this.
19 Where is the way to the habitation of light, And where is the place of darkness,
20 That you may lead them to their limits, And understand the paths of their house?
21 You know it! Well then you were already born, And the number of your days is great.
22 Have you entered into the treasures of the snow, Or have you seen the treasures of the hail,
23 Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of war and battle?
24 By what path is the light distributed, And the east wind spread over the earth?
25 Who gave way to the storm, And the way to lightning and thunder,
26 Making it rain on the uninhabited land, On the desert, where there is no man,
27 To satisfy the desert and uncultivated land, And to make the tender grass sprout?
28 Does the rain have a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
29 From which belly did the ice come? And the frost of heaven, who begat it?
30 The waters harden like stone, And the face of the deep freezes.
31 Can you bind the bonds of the Pleiades, Or will you loose the bonds of Orion?
32 Will you bring out the constellations of the heavens in due time, Or will you guide the Big Dipper with her children?
33 Did you know the ordinances of heaven? Will you have his power on earth?
34 Will you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that a multitude of waters may cover you?
35 Will you send the lightning so that they may go? And will they say to you: Here we are?
36 Who put wisdom in the heart? Or who gave intelligence to the spirit?
37 Who has set the heavens to account with wisdom? And the wineskins of heaven, who makes them bow,
38 When the dust has become hard, And the clods have stuck together?
39 Will you hunt the lion’s prey? Will you satisfy the hunger of the young lions,
40 When they lie in the caves, Or lie in wait in their dens?
41 Who prepares food for the raven, When its chicks cry to God, And wander for want of food?
1 Do you know the time when the mountain goats give birth? Or did you look at the deer when they are giving birth?
2 Did you count the months of her pregnancy, and do you know the time when she will give birth?
3 They bow down, they bring out their children, Their pains pass away.
4 His children are strengthened, they grow with the grass; They leave, and do not return to them.
5 Who set the wild donkey free, And who loosed its bonds?
6 Whom I made a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in barren places.
7 She mocks the crowd of the city; She does not hear the mule driver’s voices.
8 The hidden things of the mountains are his pasture, And he seeks every green thing.
9 Will the buffalo want to serve you, Or stay in your manger?
10 Will you tie the buffalo with a harness for the furrow? Will he plow the valleys after you?
11 Will you trust in him, because his strength is great, and will you trust him with your work?
12 Will you trust him to gather your seed and gather it on your threshing floor?
13 Did you give beautiful wings to the peacock, or wings and feathers to the ostrich?
14 Who abandons his eggs on the ground, And warms them in the dust,
15 And he forgets that the foot can tread them, And that the beast of the field can break them.
16 He hardens himself toward his children, as if they were not his, not fearing that their labor has been in vain;
17 For he deprived him of wisdom, and gave him no understanding.
18 After he rises high, he mocks the horse and his rider.
19 Did you give the horse strength? Have you clothed her neck with waving mane?
20 Will you intimidate him like a locust? The snort of his nose is formidable.
21 He digs up the earth, he rejoices in its strength, He goes out to meet the weapons;
22 He makes a mockery of fear, and does not fear, nor turns his face from the sword.
23 Against him the quiver rings, The iron of the spear and the javelin;
24 And he digs up the ground with might and fury, Heedless of the sound of the trumpet;
25 Rather, he says between the trumpets: Hey! And from afar you smell the battle, The shout of the captains, and the shouting.
26 Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, And does he spread his wings toward the south?
27 Does the eagle soar at your commandment, and lift up its nest?
28 She dwells and dwells in the rock, On the top of the rock and the rock.
29 From there she stalks the prey; Her eyes look from far away.
30 Her chicks suck the blood; And where there are corpses, there she is.
1 Moreover the Jehovah answered Job, and said,
2 Is it wisdom to contend with the Almighty? He who disputes with God, let him answer this.
3 Then Job answered the Lord, and said,
4 Behold, I am vile; what will I answer you? I put my hand over my mouth.
5 Once I spoke, but I will not answer; Even twice, but I will not speak again. Manifestations of the Power of God
6 The LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
7 Now gird your loins like a man; I will ask you, and you will answer me.
8 Will you also invalidate my judgment? Will you condemn me, to justify yourself?
9 Do you have an arm like God’s? And you crack with a voice like hers?
10 Adorn yourself now with majesty and highness, And clothe yourself with honor and beauty.
11 Pour out the fierceness of your anger; Look at every haughty person, and bring him down.
12 Look upon every proud man, and humble him, And break the wicked in their place.
13 Cover them all in dust, Confine their faces in darkness;
14 And I will also confess to you that your right hand can save you.
15 Behold now behemoth, which I made like you; Grass eats like an ox.
16 Behold, now his strength is in his loins, and his strength is in the muscles of his belly.
17 His tail moves like a cedar, And the sinews of his thighs are woven together.
18 His bones are strong as bronze, and his members are like bars of iron.
19 He is the beginning of the ways of God; He who did it can bring the sword from him to him.
20 Surely the mountains produce grass for him; And every beast of the field frolics there.
21 He will lie down under the shadows, In the secret places of the reeds and the damp places.
22 The dark trees cover him with their shadow; The willows of the stream surround it.
23 Behold, the river flows out of its mother, but it does not change; He is calm, even though an entire Jordan crashes against his mouth.
24 Will anyone take it when he is watching, And will he pierce his nose?
1 Will you draw out the leviathan with a hook, Or with a rope that you put on his tongue?
2 Will you put a rope on his nose, and pierce his jaw with a hook?
3 Will he multiply his prayers for you? Will he flatter you?
4 Will he make a covenant with you, that you may take him as your perpetual servant?
5 Will you play with him as with a bird, Or will you tie him for your girls?
6 Will the companions make a feast of it? Will they distribute it among the merchants?
7 Will you cut off his skin with a knife, or his head with a fisherman’s harpoon?
8 Put your hand on him; You will remember the battle, and you will never return.
9 Behold, the hope concerning him will be mocked, For even at the very sight of him they will faint.
10 There is no one so bold as to awaken him; Who, then, could be in front of me?
11 Who gave it to me first, that I may restore? Everything under heaven is mine.
12 I will not be silent about his members, Nor about his strength and the grace of his disposition.
13 Who will uncover the front of his garment? Who will approach him with the double bridle of him?
14 Who will open the doors of his face? The rows of his teeth are frightening.
15 The glory of his clothing are strong shields, Closed together closely.
16 One joins another, No wind enters between them.
17 They are attached to each other; They stick together, that can not be sundered.
18 With his sneezing he kindles a fire, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn.
19 Out of his mouth come hatchets of fire; Sparks of fire proceed.
20 Smoke comes out of his nostrils, as from a boiling pot or cauldron.
21 His breath kindles the coals, And a flame comes out of his mouth.
22 Strength is in his neck, and discouragement spreads before him.
23 The looser parts of his flesh are hardened; They are firm in it, and do not move.
24 His heart is firm as a stone, and strong as the bottom tooth.
25 The strong are afraid of his greatness, And because of their weakness they try to purify themselves.
26 When someone overtakes him, neither sword, nor spear, nor dart, nor corselet will last.
27 Consider iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
28 Arrow does not make him flee; The sling stones are like straw to him.
29 He considers every weapon to be stubble, And he mocks the brandishing of the javelin.
30 Below it has sharp shells; He imprints the sharpness of it on the ground.
31 She makes the deep sea boil like a pot, And she makes it like a pot of ointment.
32 Following her she makes the path shine, That the abyss seems to be white.
33 There is no one on earth like him; Animal made free of fear.
34 He despises every high thing; He is king over all the proud.
1 Job answered the Lord and said,
2 I know that you can do all things, and that no thought can be hidden from you.
3 Who is he who darkens counsel without understanding? Therefore, I spoke what I did not understand; Things too wonderful for me, which I did not understand.
4 Hear, I pray you, and I will speak; I will ask you, and you will teach me.
5 I had heard you by hearsay; But now my eyes see you.
6 Therefore I hate myself, And I repent in dust and ashes.
7 And it came to pass, after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said unto Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath was kindled against thee and thy two companions; because you have not spoken of me what is right, like my servant Job.
8 Now therefore take seven calves and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer a burnt offering for yourselves, and my servant Job will pray for you; For I will certainly attend to him so as not to treat you disgracefully, because you have not spoken of me righteously, like my servant Job.
9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD had told them; and Jehovah accepted Job’s prayer. Restoration of Job’s prosperity
10 And the Jehovah removed Job’s affliction, when he had prayed for his friends; and he increased double all the things that had been Job’s.
11 And all his brothers and all his sisters, and all those who had known him before, came to him, and ate bread with him in his house, and sympathized with him, and comforted him for all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money and a gold ring.
12 And the Jehovah blessed the last state of Job more than the first; for he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys,
13 and he had seven sons and three daughters.
14 He called the name of the first Jemima, the name of the second Cesia, and the name of the third Keren-hapuc.
15 And there were no women as beautiful as Job’s daughters in all the land; and he gave them an inheritance among his brothers.
16 After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and he saw his children, and his children’s children, to the fourth generation.
17 And Job died old and full of days.
