Joel chapter 1

Devastation of the land by locusts

1 The word of the Lord came to Joel the son of Petuel.
2 Hear this, elders, and listen, all you who dwell on the earth. Has this happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?
3 You will tell your children about this, and your children to their children, and their children to the next generation.
4 What was left of the caterpillar the cankerworm ate, and what was left of the cankerworm the cankerworm ate; and the locust ate what was left of the cankerworm.
5 Wake up, drunks, and cry; Groan, all you who drink wine, because of the new wine, because it is taken away from your mouth.
6 For a strong and innumerable people came to my land; His teeth are lion’s teeth, and his molars are lion’s teeth.
7 He devastated my vine, and stripped my fig tree of bark; He completely stripped her naked and knocked her down; Its branches remained white.
8 Weep like a young woman dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
9 The offering and the drink offering have disappeared from the house of the LORD; Jehovah’s ministering priests are in mourning.
10 The field is desolate, the land mourns; because the wheat was destroyed, the wine dried up, the oil was lost.
11 Be confused, ye farmers; Groan, vineyard owners, for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field is lost.
12 The vine is withered, and the fig tree has perished; the pomegranate tree too, the palm tree and the apple tree; all the trees of the field withered, so the joy of the sons of men was extinguished.
13 Gird yourselves and mourn, priests; groan, ministers of the altar; Come, sleep in sackcloth, ministers of my God; for the offering and the libation are taken away from the house of your God.
14 Proclaim a fast, call an assembly; Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry to the Lord.
15 Woe to the day! for the day of the Lord is near, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.
16 Was not food taken from before our eyes, joy and pleasure from the house of our God?
17 The grain rotted under the clods, the granaries were laid waste, the storehouses were destroyed; because the wheat dried up.

18 How the beasts groaned! How troubled were the herds of oxen, because they had no pasture! The sheep flocks were devastated also.
19 To you, O Lord, I will cry; for fire consumed the pastures of the desert, and flame scorched all the trees of the field.
20 The beasts of the field will roar at you also, because the streams of water have dried up, and fire has consumed the pastures of the desert.

Joel Chapter 2

1 Blow the trumpet in Zion, and give alarm on my holy mountain; Let all the inhabitants of the earth tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming, for it is near.
2 Day of darkness and darkness, day of cloud and shadow; As the dawn spreads over the mountains, so will a great and strong people come; There was never one like him, nor will there be one after him in years of many generations.
3 Fire will consume before him, flame will burn behind him; The land before him will be like the garden of Eden, and behind him like a desolate desert; nor will there be anyone who escapes from it.
4 The appearance of it is like the appearance of horses, and they will run like horsemen.
5 They will leap like the roar of chariots on the tops of the mountains; like the sound of a flame of fire that consumes leaves, like a strong town ready for battle.
6 Before him the people will fear; all faces will turn pale.
7 They will run like mighty men, they will climb the wall like men of war; Each one will go his own way, and will not turn his way.
8 No one will embrace his companion, each one will follow his race; and even if they fall on the sword they will not be hurt.
9 They will go through the city, they will run along the wall, they will climb the houses, they will enter through the windows like thieves.
10 Before him the earth will tremble, the heavens will shake; The sun and the moon will be darkened, and the stars will shrink from it.
11 And the LORD will give his command before his army; because his camp is very large; Strong is he who executes his command; For great is the day of the Lord, and very terrible; who can bear it?

Jehovah's mercy

12 Therefore now, says the Lord, turn to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.
13 Rend your heart, and not your garments, and return to the Lord your God; for he is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy, and grieves at punishment.
14 Who knows whether he will return and repent and leave a blessing behind him, that is, an offering and drink offering to the Lord your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, proclaim a fast, call an assembly.
16 Gather the people, sanctify the meeting, gather the elders, gather the children and those who suck, let the bridegroom come out of his chamber, and his bride from his bedchamber.
17 Between the entrance and the altar let the priests who are ministers of Jehovah weep, and say: Spare your people, O Jehovah, and do not give your inheritance to reproach, so that the nations may have dominion over it. Why should they say among the people: Where is their God?
18 And the LORD, who cares for his land, will forgive his people.
19 The Lord will answer and say to his people: Behold, I am sending you bread, new wine, and oil, and you will be filled with them; and I will never again make you a disgrace among the nations.
20 And I will drive him from the north far from you, and I will cast him into a dry and desert land; Its face will be towards the eastern sea, and its end towards the western sea; and he will breathe out the stench of it, and the rot of it will rise, because he has done great things.

21 Earth, do not fear; rejoice and be glad, for the Lord will do great things.
22 Animals of the field, do not fear; because the pastures of the desert will be green, because the trees will bear their fruit, the fig tree and the vine will bear their fruit.
23 You also, children of Zion, rejoice and be glad in the Lord your God; for he has given you the first rain in his time, and he will send down on you the early and the latter rain as at the beginning.
24 The threshing floors will be filled with wheat, and the winepresses will overflow with wine and oil.
25 And I will restore to you the years that the caterpillar, the cankerworm, the cankerworm, and the locust ate, my great army that I sent against you.
26 You will eat until you are satisfied, and you will praise the name of the Lord your God, who has done wonders for you; and never again will my people be ashamed.
27 And you will know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and there is no other; and my people will never ever be ashamed.

Outpouring of the Spirit of God

28 And after this I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy; Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions.
29 And also on the male and female servants I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
30 And I will give wonders in heaven and on earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun will turn into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.
32 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; For there will be salvation on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, as the Lord has said, and among the remnant whom he has called.

Joel Chapter 3

Jehovah's judgment on the nations

1 For behold, in those days, and at that time, when I bring back the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 I will gather all the nations, and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat, and there I will enter into judgment with them because of my people, and of Israel my inheritance, whom they scattered among the nations, and divided my land;
3 And they cast lots for my people, and gave the boys for a harlot, and sold the girls for wine to drink.
4 And also, what have I to do with you, Tire and Sidon, and all the territory of Philistia? Do you want to take revenge on me? And if you take revenge on me, I will soon make the payment fall on your head.
5 Because you have taken my silver and my gold, and you have put my precious and beautiful things into your temples;
6 and you sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the children of the Greeks, to remove them from their land.
7 Behold, I will raise them up from the place where you sold them, and I will return your wages upon your heads;
8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters to the children of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans, a distant nation; for the Lord has spoken.
9 Proclaim this among the nations, proclaim war, awaken the mighty, draw near, let all men of war come.
10 Forge swords from your hoes, spears from your sickles; Say the strong weak I am.
11 Gather yourselves together and come, all nations around you, and gather together; Bring your strong ones there, O Lord.
12 Let the nations awake, and go up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the nations around.
13 Throw in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, go down, for the winepress is full, the vats are overflowing; because their wickedness is great.
14 Many towns in the valley of decision; for the day of Jehovah is near in the valley of decision.
15 The sun and the moon will be darkened, and the stars will shrink back.

Liberation of Judah

16 And the Lord will roar from Zion, and will give his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth will tremble; but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
17 And you will know that I am the Lord your God, who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain; and Jerusalem will be holy, and strangers will no longer pass through it.
18 At that time it will come to pass that the mountains will drip with new wine, and the hills will flow with milk, and water will flow through all the streams of Judah; and a fountain will come out of the house of the Lord, and water the valley of Shittim.
19 Egypt will be destroyed, and Edom will become a desolate wilderness, because of the insult done to the children of Judah; because they shed innocent blood in their land.
20 But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21 And I will cleanse the blood of those whom I had not cleansed; and the Lord will dwell in Zion.
