Joshua Chapter 1

Preparations for the conquest

1 It came to pass after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying,
2 My servant Moses is dead; Now therefore arise and cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land that I am giving to the children of Israel.
3 I have given you, as I had told Moses, every place where the sole of your foot will tread.
4 From the desert and Lebanon to the great river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the great sea where the sun sets, will be your territory.
5 No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life; As I was with Moses, I will be with you; I will not leave you, nor forsake you.
6 Be strong and brave; for you will distribute to this people as an inheritance the land of which I swore to their fathers that I would give to them.
7 Only be strong and very courageous, to take care to do according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may prosper in all the things you undertake.
8 This book of the law shall never depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and everything will turn out well for you.
9 See, I command you to be strong and courageous; Do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
10 And Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
11 Go through the midst of the camp and command the people, saying, Prepare yourselves food, for within three days you will cross the Jordan to go in to possess the land that the Lord your God is giving you. possession.
12 Joshua also spoke to the Reubenites and Gadites and to the half tribe of Manasseh, saying:
13 Remember the word that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, “The LORD your God has given you rest, and has given you this land.”

14 Your women, your children, and your livestock will remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan; but you, all the mighty and strong, will go over armed before your brothers, and you will help them,
15 until the Lord has given rest to your brothers as well as to you, and until they also possess the land that the Lord your God is giving them; and then you will return to the land of your inheritance, which Moses the servant of the Lord has given you, on this side of the Jordan toward where the sun rises; and you will enter into possession of it.
16 Then they answered Joshua, saying, We will do all that you have commanded us, and we will go wherever you command us.
17 As we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you; only may the Lord your God be with you, as he was with Moses.
18 Whoever rebels against your command and does not obey your words in all that you command him, let him die; Just make an effort and be brave.

Joshua Chapter 2

Joshua sends spies to Jericho

1 Joshua son of Nun sent two spies secretly from Shittim, saying to them, Go, explore the land, and Jericho. And they went and entered the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lodged there.
2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, men of the children of Israel have come hither this night to spy out the land.
3 Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, Bring out the men who have come to you and entered your house; because they have come to spy on the entire earth.
4 But the woman had taken the two men and she had hidden them; and she said: It is true that some men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.
5 And when the door was about to be closed, when it was already dark, those men left, and I don’t know where they have gone; Follow them quickly, and you will overtake them.
6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and she had hidden them among the bundles of linen that she had placed on the roof.
7 And the men followed them along the way of the Jordan, to the fords; and the door was closed after the pursuers left.
8 Before they fell asleep, she went up to the roof and said to them,
9 I know that the Lord has given you this land; for the fear of you has fallen on us, and all the inhabitants of the land have already fainted because of you.
10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, to whom you destroyed.
11 Hearing this, he has made our heart faint; nor is there any more breath left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and in the earth beneath.
12 Now therefore I beseech you to swear to me by the Lord, that as I have shown mercy to you, so you will do to my father’s house, of which you will give me a sure sign;
13 and that you will save the lives of my father and my mother, my brothers and sisters, and all that is theirs; and that you will free our lives from death.
14 They answered him: Our life will answer for yours, if you do not denounce this matter of ours; and when the Lord has given us the land, we will show you mercy and truth.
15 Then she let them down with a rope through the window; for her house was on the wall of the city, and she lived on the wall.
16 And she said to them, Go to the mountain, so that those who came after you will not find you; and remain hidden there three days, until those who follow you have returned; and then you will go on your way.

17 And they said to him: We will be released from this oath with which you have sworn to us.
18 Behold, when we enter the land, you will tie this scarlet cord to the window through which you let us down; and you will gather into your house your father and your mother, your brothers and all your father’s family.
19 Whoever goes out of the doors of your house, his blood will be on his head, and we will be blameless. But whoever stays in your house, his blood will be on our head if a hand touches him.
20 And if you denounce this matter of ours, we will be free from this your oath with which you have sworn to us.
21 She answered, Let it be as you have said. Then she dismissed them, and they went away; and she tied the scarlet cord to the window.
22 And as they walked, they came to the mountain and remained there three days, until those who were pursuing them returned; and those who pursued them searched all along the road, but they did not find them.
23 Then the two men returned; They came down from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all the things that had happened to them.
24 And they said to Joshua, The Lord has given the whole land into our hands; and all the inhabitants of the country also faint before us.

Joshua Chapter 3

The crossing of the Jordan

1 Joshua arose early in the morning, and he and all the children of Israel set out from Shittim and came to the Jordan, and rested there before crossing it.
2 And after three days, the officers went around the camp,
3 and commanded the people, saying, When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you will go out from your place and go after her,
4 so that you may know the way you should go; because you have not passed this way before now. But between you and it there is a distance of about two thousand cubits; you will not approach it.
5 And Joshua said to the people, Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.
6 And Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass before the people. And they took the ark of the covenant and went before the people.
7 Then the LORD said to Joshua, From this day I will begin to magnify you in the eyes of all Israel, so that they may understand that as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.
8 You shall therefore command the priests who carry the ark of the covenant, saying, When you have entered to the edge of the water of the Jordan, you shall stop at the Jordan.
9 And Joshua said to the children of Israel, Draw near, and hear the words of the Lord your God.
10 And Joshua added, By this you will know that the living God is in your midst, and that he will drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittite, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites.
11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will pass before you in the middle of the Jordan.
12 So take now twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.
13 And when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD, Lord of all the earth, settle in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be divided; for the waters that come from above will stop in a heap.
14 And it came to pass, when the people left their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests before the people carrying the ark of the covenant,

15 When those who were carrying the ark entered the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who were carrying the ark were wet at the edge of the water (for the Jordan usually overflows on all its banks all the time of the harvest),
16 the waters Those that came from above stopped as if in a heap far from the city of Adam, which is next to Zarethan, and those that went down to the Sea of ā€‹ā€‹Arabah, to the Salt Sea, ended and were divided; and the people passed in the direction of Jericho.
17 But the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until all the people had finished crossing the Jordan; and all Israel passed over on dry ground.

Joshua Chapter 4

The twelve stones taken from Jordan

1 When all the people had crossed the Jordan, the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,
2 Take twelve men from the people, one from each tribe,
3 and command them, saying, Take from here from the middle of the Jordan, from the place where they are. firm the feet of the priests, twelve stones, which you will carry with you, and set them up in the place where you will spend the night.
4 Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from among the children of Israel, one from each tribe.
5 And Joshua said to them, Go before the ark of the Lord your God to the middle of the Jordan, and let each of you take a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel,
6 so that this may be a sign. between you; and when your children ask their parents tomorrow, saying: What do these stones mean?
7 You will answer them: That the waters of the Jordan were divided before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; When she crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were divided; and these stones will serve as a memorial to the children of Israel forever.
8 And the children of Israel did as Joshua commanded them: they took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, as the Lord had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over to the place where they camped. , and they lifted them up there.
9 Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests were who carried the ark of the covenant; and they have been there until today.
10 And the priests who carried the ark stood in the middle of the Jordan until everything was done that the Lord had commanded Joshua to say to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua; and the people hastened and passed on.
11 And when all the people had passed over, the ark of the Lord also passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.
12 Also the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh passed armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had told them;
13 About forty thousand armed men, ready for war, crossed over to the plain of Jericho before the Lord.
14 On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life.
15 Then the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,
16 Command the priests who carry the ark of the testimony to come up from the Jordan.

17 And Joshua commanded the priests, saying, Come up from the Jordan.
18 And it came to pass, when the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were in a dry place, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, flowing as before over all its edges.
19 And the people came up from Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and camped at Gilgal, on the east side of Jericho.
20 And Joshua set up in Gilgal the twelve stones which he had brought from Jordan.
21 And he spoke to the children of Israel, saying, When tomorrow your children ask their parents, and say, What do these stones mean?
22 You will declare to your children, saying: Israel passed through this Jordan on dry land.
23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you, until you had passed over, just as the LORD your God had dried up the Red Sea, which he dried up before us until we passed over;
24 so that all the people of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is powerful; so that you may fear the Lord your God always.

Joshua Chapter 5

Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

1 When all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were near the sea, heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the children of Israel until they had passed over , their heart failed, and there was no more encouragement in them before the children of Israel.
2 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, Make yourself sharp knives, and circumcise the children of Israel the second time.
3 And Joshua made himself sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel on the hill of Aralot.
4 This is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: All the people who had left Egypt, the men, all the men of war, had died in the desert, on the way, after they left Egypt.
5 For all the people who had gone out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the desert, along the way, after they had left Egypt, were not circumcised.
6 For the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for forty years, until all the men of war that came out of Egypt were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; Therefore Jehovah swore to them that he would not let them see the land of which Jehovah had sworn to his parents that he would give it to us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
7 Joshua circumcised their sons, whom he had succeeded in his place; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised along the way.
8 And when they had finished circumcising all the people, they stayed in the same place in the camp until they were healed.
9 And the LORD said to Joshua, Today I have taken away from you the reproach of Egypt; therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, until today.
10 And the children of Israel camped at Gilgal, and celebrated the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, on the plains of Jericho.
11 On the next day after the Passover they ate of the fruit of the land, unleavened bread, and on the same day new ears of wheat toasted.
12 And the manna ceased the next day, since they began to eat of the fruit of the ground; and the children of Israel had no more manna, but ate of the fruits of the land of Canaan that year.

Joshua and the man with the drawn sword

13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and saw a man standing before him, who had a drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua, going up to him, said to him, Are you one of us, or are you one of our enemies?
14 He answered: No; but as a Prince of the army of the Lord I have come now. Then Joshua, falling on his face to the ground, worshiped him; and he said to her, What does my Lord say to his servant?
15 And the Prince of the army of the LORD said to Joshua, Take off your shoes from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.

Joshua Chapter 6

The taking of Jericho

1 Now Jericho was closed, very closed, because of the children of Israel; Nobody entered or left.
2 But the LORD said to Joshua, See, I have given Jericho and its king, with its men of war, into your hand.
3 Therefore all the men of war shall surround the city, going around the city once; and this you will do for six days.
4 And seven priests will carry seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark; And on the seventh day you will circle the city seven times, and the priests will blow the trumpets.
5 And when they blow the ram’s horn for a long time, so that you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people will shout with a loud voice, and the wall of the city will fall; then the people will go up, each one straight forward.
6 So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry ram’s horn trumpets before the ark of the Lord.
7 And he said to the people, Go over, and surround the city; and those who are armed will pass before the ark of the Lord.
8 And when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests, carrying the seven ram’s horn trumpets, passed before the ark of the Lord, and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them.
9 And the armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed after the ark, while the trumpets sounded continually.
10 And Joshua commanded the people, saying, You shall not shout, nor shall your voice be heard, nor shall a word come out of your mouth, until the day that I say to you, Shout; then you will scream.
11 So he made the ark of the Lord go around the city, and they returned to the camp and spent the night there.
12 And Joshua arose early in the morning, and the priests took the ark of the Lord.
13 And the seven priests, carrying the seven ram’s horn trumpets, went before the ark of the Lord, walking always and blowing the trumpets; and the armed men went before them, and the rear guard followed after the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets sounded continually.
14 So they circled the city again on the second day, and returned to the camp; and they did this for six days.
15 On the seventh day they got up at dawn, and went around the city in the same way seven times; This day alone they circled around it seven times.
16 And when the priests blew the trumpets the seventh time, Joshua said to the people, Shout, for the Lord has given you the city.
17And the city will be accursed to the Lord, with all the things that are in it; Only Rahab the harlot will live, with all who are in the house with her, because he hid the messengers we sent.
18 But you beware of the accursed thing; neither touch nor take anything that is accursed, lest you make the camp of Israel accursed and disturb it.

19 But all the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and iron, let them be consecrated to the Lord, and let them enter the treasury of the Lord.
20 Then the people shouted, and the priests blew their trumpets; And it came to pass, when the people had heard the sound of the trumpet, that they shouted with a loud voice, and the wall fell down. The people then went up to the city, each one straight ahead, and took it.
21 And they destroyed with the edge of the sword everything that was in the city; men and women, young and old, even the oxen, the sheep, and the donkeys.
22 But Joshua said to the two men who had scouted the land, Go into the house of the harlot woman, and bring out the woman and all that was hers from there, as you swore.
23 And the spies went in and brought out Rahab, his father, his mother, his brothers, and all that was his; And they also brought out all his kindred, and put them outside the camp of Israel.
24 And they consumed the city with fire, and all that was in it; They only put into the treasury of the house of the Lord the silver and the gold, and the vessels of bronze and iron.
25 But Joshua saved the life of Rahab the harlot, and her father’s house, and all that she had; and she dwelt among the Israelites to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua had sent to spy out Jericho.
26 At that time Joshua swore an oath, saying, Cursed before the Lord is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city of Jericho. On her firstborn I laid her foundation, and on her youngest son I laid her gates.
27 So the LORD was with Joshua, and his name went out throughout the whole earth.

Joshua Chapter 7

the sin of achan

1 But the children of Israel committed a transgression concerning the accursed thing; for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed; and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
2 Then Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which was near Beth-aven toward the east of Beth-el; and he spoke to them, saying: Go up and explore the land. And they went up and recognized Ai.
3 And returning to Joshua, they said to him, Let not all the people go up, but let them go up about two thousand or three thousand men, and they will take Ai; Do not tire out all the people by going there, because they are few.
4 And about three thousand men went up from the town, and fled before the men of Ai.
5 And those of Ai killed about thirty-six men of them, and followed them from the gate to Sebarim, and defeated them on the way down; Therefore the heart of the people failed and became like water.
6 Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell on his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
7 And Joshua said, Ah, Lord Jehovah! Why did you make this people cross the Jordan, to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites, so that they might destroy us? I wish we had stayed on the other side of the Jordan!
8 Oh, Lord! What shall I say, since Israel has turned its back on its enemies?
9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear, and will surround us, and will blot out our name from the land; and then what will you do to your great name?
10 And the LORD said to Joshua, Arise; Why do you prostrate yourself like this on your face?
11 Israel has sinned, and they have even broken my covenant that I commanded them; and they have also taken from the accursed, and have even stolen, they have lied, and they have even kept it among their belongings.
12 Therefore the children of Israel will not be able to stand against their enemies, but will turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become anathema; nor will I be with you any more, except you destroy the accursed thing from among you.
13 Arise, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow; For thus says the Lord God of Israel: There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; You will not be able to confront your enemies until you have removed the accursed thing from your midst.
14 Therefore you will approach tomorrow by your tribes; and the tribe that the Lord will take will draw near by their families; and the family that Jehovah takes will approach their houses; and the house that the Lord takes will be approached by the men;
fifteenand whoever is caught in the accursed thing will be burned, he and all he has, because he has broken the covenant of the Lord, and has committed evil in Israel.
16 So Joshua, rising early in the morning, brought Israel near by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken.
17 And bringing the tribe of Judah near, the family of Zerah was taken; and then bringing the men of Zerah to the family, Zabdi was taken.

18 He brought men to his house, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
19 Then Joshua said to Achan, My son, give glory to the LORD God of Israel, and give him praise, and tell me now what you have done; don’t hide it from me.
20 And Achan answered Joshua, saying, Truly I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done.
21 For I saw among the spoils a very good Babylonian cloak, and two hundred shekels of silver, and an ingot of gold weighing fifty shekels, which I coveted and took; and behold, it is hidden under the ground in the middle of my tent, and the money under it.
22 Joshua then sent messengers, who ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent, and the money under it.
23 And they took it from the middle of the tent, and brought it to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid it before the Lord.
24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took from Achan the son of Zerah, the money, the cloak, the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they took everything to the Valley of Achor.
25 And Joshua said to him, Why have you troubled us? May Jehovah be troubled on this day. And all the Israelites stoned them, and burned them after stoning them.
26 And they raised upon it a great heap of stones, which remains to this day. And the LORD turned from his fierce anger. And for this reason that place is called the Valley of Achor, until today.

Joshua Chapter 8

Capture and destruction of Hai

1 The Lord said to Joshua: Do not be afraid or dismayed; Take with you all the people of war, and arise and go up to Ai. See, I have delivered into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land.
2 And you will make Ai and his king as you made Jericho and his king; only their spoil and their beasts you will take for yourselves. You will therefore lay ambushes for the city behind it.
3 Then Joshua and all the men of war arose to go up against Ai; and Joshua chose thirty thousand strong men, whom he sent by night.
4 And he commanded them, saying, Take heed, you shall lie in ambush for the city behind it; You will not go far from the city, and you will all be ready.
5 And I and all the people that are with me will approach the city; and when they come out against us, as they did before, we will flee before them.
6 And they will go out after us, until we remove them from the city; because they will say: They flee from us like the first time. We will run away, in front of them.
7 Then you will arise from the ambush and take the city; for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hands.
8 And when you have taken it, you will set it on fire. You will do according to the word of the Lord; Look, I have sent it to you.
9 Then Joshua sent them; and they went into ambush, and stood between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai; and Joshua stayed that night in the midst of the people.
10 Joshua got up early in the morning and inspected the people, and he and the elders of Israel went up before the people against Ai.
11 And all the men of war that were with him went up and approached, and came before the city, and camped north of Ai; and the valley was between him and Ai.
12 And he took about five thousand men, and laid them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city.
13 Thus they arranged the people: the whole camp on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city, and Joshua advanced that night to the middle of the valley.
14 And it came to pass, that when the king of Ai saw it, he and his people hurried and rose early; And at the appointed time, the men of the city went out to meet Israel to fight, in front of the Arabah, not knowing that she was in ambush behind the city.
15 Then Joshua and all Israel pretended to be defeated and fled before them along the road to the desert.
16 And all the people that were in Ai gathered together to follow them; and they followed Joshua, being thus removed from the city.
17 And there was not a man left in Ai or in Bethel, who did not go out after Israel; and to follow Israel they left the city open.
18 Then the LORD said to Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that was in his hand toward the city.
19 And those who were in ambush quickly arose from his place, and ran as soon as he lifted up his hand, and came to the city, and took it, and hastened to set it on fire.
20 And the men of Ai turned their faces, and when they looked, behold, the smoke of the city ascended to heaven, and they could not flee either way, because the people who were fleeing into the desert turned against them. those who followed them.
21 Joshua and all Israel, seeing that those in ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke was rising from the city, turned and attacked those of Ai.
22 And the rest went out of the city to meet him, and so they were shut up in the midst of Israel, some on one side, and the others on the other. And they wounded them until there was none of them left to escape.
23 But they took the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.
24 And when the Israelites had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field and in the desert where they had pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, all the Israelites returned to Ai, and they also smote it. on the edge of the sword.

25 And the number of those who fell that day, men and women, was twelve thousand, all of Ai.
26 For Joshua did not withdraw his hand from him, which he had stretched out with the spear, until he had completely destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
27 But the Israelites took the beasts and the spoils of the city for themselves, according to the word of the Lord which he had commanded Joshua.
28 And Joshua burned Ai and reduced it to a heap of rubble, desolate forever to this day.
29 And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until nightfall; And when the sun had set, Joshua commanded that his body should be taken from the tree and thrown into the gate of the city; and they raised upon it a great heap of stones, which remains to this day.

Reading of the law on Mount Ebal

30 Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel on Mount Ebal,
31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones on the which no one raised iron; and they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.
32 He also wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote before the children of Israel.
33 And all Israel, with their elders, officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark, in the presence of the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, both foreigners and natives. Half of them were toward Mount Gerizim, and the other half toward Mount Ebal, just as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had commanded before, so that they should first bless the people of Israel.
34 After this, he read all the words of the law, the blessings and the curses, according to everything that is written in the book of the law.
35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, that Joshua did not have read before the whole congregation of Israel, and the women, the children, and the foreigners who lived among them.

Joshua Chapter 9

Cunning of the Gibeonites

1 When all the kings who were on this side of the Jordan heard these things, both in the mountains and in the plains, and on all the coast of the Great Sea before Lebanon, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites,
2 they gathered together to fight against Joshua and Israel.
3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
4 they used cunning; So they went and pretended to be ambassadors, and they took old sacks on their donkeys, and old wineskins, torn and mended,
5 and old and sewn shoes on their feet, with old clothes on them; and all the bread they brought for the journey was dry and moldy.
6 And they came to Joshua into the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him and to them of Israel, We come from a very far land; So now make an alliance with us.
7 And the people of Israel said to the Hivites, Perhaps you dwell among us. How then can we make a covenant with you?
8 They answered Joshua: We are your servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are you, and where do you come from?
9 And they answered, Your servants have come from a very far land, for the name of the Lord your God; for we have heard his fame, and all that he did in Egypt,
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan: to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth.
11 Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our land said to us: Take in your hands provisions for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them: We are your servants; make an alliance with us now.
12 We took this bread of ours hot from our houses for the journey on the day we left to come to you; and here it is now dry and moldy.
13 We also filled new skins with wine; here they are already broken; Also these our clothes and our shoes are already old because of the long journey.
14 And the men of Israel took of their provisions, and did not inquire of the Lord.
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and celebrated an alliance with them, granting them life; and the princes of the congregation also swore it.
16 After three days had passed after they had made an alliance with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.
17 And the children of Israel went out, and on the third day they came to their cities; and their cities were Gibeon, Capphira, Beeroth, and Kiriathjearim.
18And the children of Israel did not kill them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19 But all the princes answered the whole congregation: We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel; Therefore, we cannot touch them now.
20 This is what we will do to them: we will let them live, so that wrath will not come on us because of the oath we swore to them.

21 So the princes said of them, Let them live; and they were appointed hewers of wood and bearers of water for the entire congregation, granting them life, as the princes had promised them.
22 And Joshua called them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have you deceived us, saying, We live far away from you, while you dwell among us?
23 Now therefore you are cursed, and there will not cease to be servants among you, and he who cuts wood and draws water for the house of my God.
24 And they answered Joshua and said, As it was made known to your servants that the Lord your God had commanded Moses his servant to give you the whole land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before him. you, therefore we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and we did this.
25 Now, therefore, here we are in your hand; Whatever seems good and right to you to do with us, do it.
26 And he did so to them; for he delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they did not kill them.
27 And Joshua appointed them that day to be hewers of wood and bearers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord in the place that the Lord chose, which they are to this day.

Joshua Chapter 10

Defeat of the Amorites

1 When Adonizedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and devastated it (as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he did to Ai and its king), and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with the Israelites , and they were among them,
2 he was greatly afraid; for Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and larger than Ai, and all its men were strong.
3 Therefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piream king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,
4 Come up to me and help me, and let us fight against Gibeon; for he has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.
5 And five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they with all their armies, and camped near Gibeon, and they fought against her.
6 Then the inhabitants of Gibeon sent to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, saying, Do not withhold help from your servants; come up to us quickly to defend us and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites who live in the mountains have banded together against us.
7 And Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men.
8 And the LORD said to Joshua, Do not be afraid of them; for I have delivered them into your hand, and none of them will prevail before you.
9 And Joshua came to them suddenly, having gone up all night from Gilgal.
10 And the LORD filled them with consternation before Israel, and smote them with a great slaughter in Gibeon; and he followed them on the road that goes up to Beth-horon, and smote them as far as Azekah and Maceda.
11 And while they were fleeing from the Israelites, at the descent of Beth-horon, the LORD threw great stones from heaven upon them as far as Azekah, and they died; and there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the children of Israel killed with the sword.
12 Then Joshua spoke to the LORD on the day that the LORD handed over the Amorites before the children of Israel, and said in the presence of the Israelites, Sol, stay at Gibeon; And you, moon, in the valley of AjalĆ³n.
13 And the sun stood still and the moon stood still, Until the people had taken revenge on their enemies. Is this not written in the book of Jasher? And the sun stood still in the middle of the sky, and did not hasten to set for almost a whole day.
14 And there was no day like that, neither before it nor after it, when the LORD heard the voice of a man; because Jehovah fought for Israel.
15 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, returned to the camp at Gilgal.
16 And the five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Maceda.
17 And it was reported to Joshua that the five kings had been found hiding in a cave at Maceda.
18 Then Joshua said, Roll large stones at the entrance of the cave, and place men by it to guard them;
19 And you do not stop, but follow your enemies, and strike their rear, without allowing them to enter their cities; for the Lord your God has delivered them into your hand.
20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had finished smiting them with a great slaughter to the point of destroying them, that those who remained of them went into the fortified cities.
21 All the people returned safely to Joshua, to the camp at Maceda; There was no one who moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
22 Then Joshua said, Open the entrance to the cave, and bring out those five kings.
23 And they did so, and brought out those five kings out of the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 And when they had brought them to Joshua, Joshua called all the men of Israel, and said to the chief men of the war that had come with him, Come near, and place your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came near and put their feet on their necks.

25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, neither be dismayed; Be strong and courageous, for this is what Jehovah will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.
26 And after this Joshua smote them and killed them, and hung them on five stakes; and they were left hanging on the wood until nightfall.
27 And when the sun was about to set, Joshua commanded that they should be taken from the trees, and thrown into the cave where they had hidden; and they placed large stones at the entrance of the cave, which remain to this day.
28 On that same day Joshua took Maceda, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and killed its king; He completely destroyed them, with everything that was alive in them, leaving nothing; and he made the king of Maceda as he had made the king of Jericho.
29 And Joshua and all Israel with him crossed from Maceda to Libnah; and he fought against Libna;
30 And the LORD also delivered her and her king into the hand of Israel; and he struck her with the edge of the sword, with all that was alive in her, leaving nothing; and he made her king as he had made the king of Jericho.
31 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, crossed from Libna to Lachish, and encamped near it, and fought against it;
32 And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, and took it the next day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, with all that was alive in it, just as he had done in Libna.
33 Then Horam king of Gezer went up to help Lachish; But Joshua destroyed him and his people until he left none of them.
34 Joshua and all Israel with him crossed from Lachish to Eglon; and they camped near it, and fought against it;
35 And they took her on the same day, and struck her with the edge of the sword; and that day he slew all that was alive in it, as he had done in Lachish.
36 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, went up from Eglon to Hebron, and fought against it.
37 And taking it, they struck it with the edge of the sword, its king and all its cities, with all that was alive in it, leaving nothing; As he had done to Eglon, so they destroyed it with all that was alive in it.
38 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it;
39 and he took it, and the king of it, and all the cities of it; and they wounded them with the edge of the sword, and destroyed everything that was alive there, leaving nothing; As he had done to Hebron, and as he had done to Libna and her king, so he did to Debir and her king.
40 So Joshua struck down the entire region of the mountains, the Negev, the plains, and the slopes, and all the kings of it, leaving nothing; He killed everything that was alive, just as Jehovah, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
41And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea unto Gaza, and all the land of Goshen unto Gibeon.
42 Joshua took all these kings and their lands at once; because Jehovah the God of Israel fought for Israel.
43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Joshua Chapter 11

Defeat of Jabin's alliance

1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard this, he sent a message to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Simron, to the king of Achshaph,
2 and to the kings who were in the northern region in the mountains, and in the Arabah south of Cinereth , in the plains, and in the regions of Dor to the west;
3 and to the Canaanite who were on the east and to the west, to the Amorite, to the Hittite, to the Perizzite, to the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
4 These went out, and with them all their armies, many people, like the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and war chariots.
5 All these kings joined together, and came and camped together by the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
6 But the LORD said to Joshua, Do not be afraid of them, for at this time tomorrow I will deliver them all dead before Israel; You will hamstring their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.
7 And Joshua, and all the men of war with him, suddenly came against them by the waters of Merom.
8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they smote them and followed them to Sidon the great and to Misrephothmaim, and to the plain of Mizpah on the east, smiting them until they left none.
9 And Joshua did to them as the Lord had commanded him: he hamstrung their horses, and his chariots he burned with fire.
10 And Joshua returned, and at the same time took Hazor, and slew his king with the sword; for Hazor had formerly been head of all these kingdoms.
11 And they killed with the sword everything that was alive in it, completely destroying it, leaving nothing that breathed; and Hazor set fire.
12 Joshua also took all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.
13 But all the cities that were on hills, Israel did not burn; Only Hazor was burned by Joshua.
14 And the children of Israel took for themselves all the spoil and the beasts of those cities; But they wounded all the men with the edge of the sword until they were destroyed, without leaving any alive.
15 As the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua; And so Joshua did it, without taking away a word from everything that Jehovah had commanded Moses.

Joshua takes over the entire land

16 So Joshua took all that land, the mountains, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the plains, the Arabah, the mountains of Israel and its valleys.

16 So Joshua took all that land, the mountains, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the plains, the Arabah, the mountains of Israel and its valleys.
17 From Mount Halak, which goes up to Seir, to Baal-gad in the plain of Lebanon, on the side of Mount Hermon; He also took all his kings, and smote them and killed them.
18 Joshua had war with these kings for a long time.
19 There was no city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites who lived in Gibeon; They took everything in war.
20 For this came from the LORD, who hardened their hearts so that they would resist Israel with war, to destroy them, so that no mercy would be shown to them, but that they would be uprooted, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
21 Also at that time Joshua came and destroyed the Anakim from the mountains of Hebron, Debir, Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua destroyed them and their cities.
22 None of the Anakim remained in the land of the children of Israel; They only remained in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod.
23 So Joshua took all the land, according to all that the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it to the Israelites for an inheritance according to their distribution according to their tribes; And the land rested from the war.

Joshua Chapter 12

Kings defeated by Moses

1 These are the kings of the land whom the children of Israel defeated and whose land they possessed on the other side of the Jordan toward the rising sun, from the Brook of Arnon to Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah eastward:
2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the bank of the brook Arnon, and from the middle of the valley, and half of Gilead, to the brook Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon;
3 and the Arabah to the sea of ā€‹ā€‹Cinereth on the east; and to the sea of ā€‹ā€‹the Arabah, the Salt Sea, to the east, by the road to Betjesimot, and from the south to the foot of the slopes of Pisgah.
4 And the territory of Og king of Bashan, which was left of the Rephaim, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei,
5 and ruled in Mount Hermon, in Salcah, in all Bashan to the borders of Geshur and Maacah, and half of Gilead, the territory of Sihon king of Heshbon.
6 Moses the servant of Jehovah and the children of Israel defeated these; and Moses the servant of the Lord gave that land as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.

Kings defeated by Joshua

And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel defeated, on this side of the Jordan toward the west, from Baal-gad in the plain of Lebanon to the mountain of Halak that goes up to Seir; and Joshua gave the land as a possession to the tribes of Israel, according to their distribution;
8 in the mountains, in the valleys, in the Arabah, on the slopes, in the desert and in the Negev; the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite.
9 The king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is next to Bethel, another;

10 the king of Jerusalem, another; the king of Hebron, another;
11 the king of Jarmuth, another; the king of Lachish, another;
12 the king of Eglon, another; the king of Gezer, another;
13 the king of Debir, another; the king of Geder, another;

14 the king of Horma, another; the king of Arad, another;
15 the king of Libnah, another; the king of Adullam, another;
16 the king of Maceda, another; the king of Bethel, another;
17 the king of TapĆŗa, another; the king of Hepher, another;
18 the king of Aphek, another; the king of Sharon, another;
19 the king of Madon, another; the king of Hazor, another;
20 the king of Shimron-meron, another; the king of Achsaph, another;
21 the king of Taanak, another; the king of Megiddo, another;
22 the king of Kedesh, another; the king of Jokneam of Carmel, another;
23 the king of Dor, of the province of Dor, another; the king of Goim in Gilgal, another;
24 the king of Tirzah, another; thirty-one kings for all.

Joshua Chapter 13

Land still unconquered

1 Now when Joshua was old, advanced in years, the LORD said to him: You are already old, of advanced years, and there is still much land left to possess.
2 This is the land that remains: all the territories of the Philistines, and all the territories of the Gesuretes;
3 from Sihor, which is in the east of Egypt, to the border of Ekron in the north, which is considered to be of the Canaanites; of the five princes of the Philistines, the Gaziite, the Ashdodean, the Ashkeloneite, the Gittite, and the Ekronitean; also the birds;
4 To the south all the land of the Canaanites, and Mehara, which is of the Sidonians, as far as Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites;
5 the land of the Ghiblites, and all Lebanon toward the place where the sun rises, from Baal-gad at the foot of Mount Hermon, to the entrance of Hamath;
6 all who live in the mountains from Lebanon to Misrephothmaim, all the Sidonians; I will destroy them before the children of Israel; You alone will distribute the land by lot to the Israelites as an inheritance, as I have commanded you.
7 Therefore now distribute this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes, and to the half tribe of Manasseh.
8 For the Reubenites and Gadites and the other half of Manasseh have now received their inheritance, which Moses gave to them on the other side of the Jordan to the east, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave it to them;
9 from Aroer, which is on the bank of the brook Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba, as far as Dibon;
10 all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the borders of the children of Ammon;
11 and Gilead, and the territories of the Gesureites and the Maacathetes, and all Mount Hermon, and all the land of Bashan as far as Salkah;
12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, which was left of the rest of the Rephaim; for Moses defeated them, and drove them out.
13 But the children of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites and the Maacathetes, but Geshur and Maacah lived among the Israelites to this day.

The territory that Moses distributed

14 But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; The sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel are his inheritance, as he had told them.
15 So Moses gave to the tribe of the children of Reuben according to his families.
16 And their territory was from Aroer, which is on the bank of the brook Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain as far as Medeba;
17 Heshbon, with all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, Bamot-baal, Beth-baal-meon,
18 Jahaza, Kademoth, Mephaat,
19 Kiriathaim, Sibma, Zareth-sahar on the mountain of the valley,
20 Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth-jesimot,
21 all cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses defeated, and the princes of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, princes of Sihon who lived in that land .

22 The children of Israel also killed Balaam the soothsayer, the son of Beor, with the sword, among the others they killed.
23 And the Jordan was the border of the territory of the children of Reuben. This was the inheritance of the sons of Reuben according to their families, these cities with their villages.

24 Moses also gave to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad, according to their families.
25 Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half of the land of the children of Ammon as far as Aroer, which is opposite Rabbah.
26 And from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpah, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;
27 and in the valley, Beth-aram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon; the Jordan and its border to the end of the Sea of ā€‹ā€‹Cinereth on the other side of the Jordan, to the east.
28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad by their families, these cities with their villages.
29 Moses also gave an inheritance to the half tribe of Manasseh; and it was for the half tribe of the children of Manasseh, according to his families.
30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair that are in Bashan, sixty towns,
31 and half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, for the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the sons of Machir according to their families.
32 This is what Moses divided as an inheritance in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan from Jericho, eastward.
33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; The Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, as he had told them.

Joshua Chapter 14

Canaan divided by lot

1 This then is what the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel distributed to them.
2 By lot their inheritance was given to them, as the Lord had commanded Moses to give it to the nine tribes and the half tribe.
3 For to the two tribes and to the half tribe Moses had given an inheritance beyond the Jordan; but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.
4 For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; and they gave no part to the Levites in the land except cities in which they should dwell, with their common lands for their cattle and flocks.
5 As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did in dividing the land.

Caleb receives Hebron

6 And the children of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal; And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea concerning me and you.
7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him news as I felt it in my heart.
8 And my brothers, who had gone up with me, made the hearts of the people fail; but I complied by following Jehovah my God.
9 Then Moses swore, saying, Surely the land that your foot has trodden will be yours and your children’s for an everlasting inheritance, because you have done so in following the Lord my God.
10 Now the Lord has made me live, as he said, these forty-five years, from the time that the Lord spoke these words to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; and now, behold, today I am eighty-five years old.
11 I am still as strong as the day Moses sent me; What was my strength then, such is now my strength for war, and for going out and for entering.

12 Now therefore give me this mountain, of which the Lord spoke that day; for you heard on that day that the Anakim are there, and that there are great and fortified cities. Perhaps the Lord will be with me, and I will drive them out, as the Lord has said.
13 Joshua then blessed him, and gave Caleb the son of Jephunneh to Hebron for an inheritance.
14 Therefore Hebron became an inheritance to Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite until today, because he had faithfully followed the Lord God of Israel.
15 But the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba; for Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land rested from the war

Joshua Chapter 15

The territory of Judah

1 The portion that fell to the tribe of the children of Judah, according to their families, extended to the border of Edom, with the desert of Zin in the south as its southern end.
2 And its border on the south side was from the coast of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces south;
3 and went out to the south of the Ascent of Acrabim, passing as far as Zin; and going up to the south to Kadesh-barnea, it passed to Hezron, and going up through Adar it turned to Carca.
4 From there it passed to Asmon, and went out to the stream of Egypt, and ended in the sea. This, then, will be the southern limit for you.
5 The eastern limit is the Salt Sea to the mouth of the Jordan. And the border on the north side, from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan;
6 And go up this border by Beth-hogla, and pass to the north of Beth-araba, and from there go up to the stone of Bohan son of Reuben.
7 Then he goes up to Debir from the Valley of Achor; and to the north he looks upon Gilgal, which is opposite the rise of Adumin, which is to the south of the brook; and it passes to the waters of En-shemesh, and comes out to the fountain of Rogel.
8 And this border goes up through the valley of the son of Hinnom to the south side of the Jebusite, which is Jerusalem. Then he goes up to the top of the mountain that is opposite the valley of Hinnom towards the west, which is at the end of the valley of Rephaim, on the north side.
9 And it goes around this border from the top of the mountain to the source of the waters of Nephtoa, and goes out to the cities of the mountain of Ephron, then surrounding Baalah, which is Kiriath-jearim.
10 Then turn this boundary from Baalah westward to Mount Seir; and pass by the mountain of Jearim towards the north, which is Chesalon, and go down to Beth-shemesh, and pass to Timna.
11 Then he goes out next to Ekron towards the north; and it goes around Sicron, and passes through Mount Baalah, and goes out to Jabneel and ends at the sea.
12 The western limit is the Great Sea. This was the border of the children of Judah, all around, according to his families.

Caleb conquers Hebron and Debir

13 But to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave his portion among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua; the city of Kiriath-arba father of Anak, which is Hebron.
14 And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the sons of Anak.
15 From here he went up against those who lived in Debir; and the name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher.
16 And Caleb said, To him that attack Kiriath-sepher, and take it, to him I will give my daughter Achsah to wife.
17 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took her; and he gave him her daughter Achsah to wife.
18 And it came to pass, when he took her from her, that he persuaded her to ask her father for land of hers, that he might cultivate it. She then got off the donkey. And Caleb said to him, What have you got?
19 And she answered, Grant me a gift; Since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also fountains of water. He then gave him the sources above, and those below.

The cities of Judah

20 This then is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families.
21 And there were the cities of the tribe of the children of Judah in the extreme south, toward the border of Edom: Cabseel, Edar, Jagur,
22 Kina, Dimona, Adada,
23 Kedesh, Hazor, Itnan,
24 Ziph, Telem, Bealot ,

30 Eltolad, Chesil, Horma,
31 Ziklag, Madmanah, Sansana,
32 Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain and Rimmon; throughout twenty-nine cities with their villages.
33 In the plains, Eshtaol, Zora, Asena,
34 Zanoah, En-ganim, Tapua, Enam,
35 Jarmuth, Adullam, Soco, Azekah,

37 Zenan, Hadasa, Migdal-gad,
38 Dileam, Mizpah, Jokteel,
39 Lachish, Boshkath, Eglon,
40 Cabon, Lahmam, Chitlis,
41 Gederoth, Beth-dagon, Naama, and Maceda; sixteen cities with their villages.
42 Libna, Ether, Asan,
43 Jiphthah, Asena, Nezib,
44 Keila, Achzib and Mareshah; nine cities with their villages.
45 Ekron with its towns and its villages.
46 From Ekron to the sea, all those that are near Ashdod with their villages.
47 Ashdod with its towns and its villages; Gaza with its towns and villages to the river of Egypt, and the Great Sea with its coasts.
48 And in the mountains, Samir, Jatir, Soco,
49 Dana, Kiriath-sana (which is Debir);
50 Anab, Estemoa, Anim,
51 Goshen, Holon and Gilo; eleven cities with their villages.
52 Arab, Duma, Esan,
53 Hanum, Beth-tapua, Aphekah,
54 Humta, Kiriath-arba (which is Hebron) and Sior; nine cities with their villages.
55 Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juta,
56 Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah,
57 Cain, Gibeah and Timna; ten cities with their villages.
58 Halhul, Beth-zur, Gedor,
59 Maarath, Beth-anoth, and Eltecon; six cities with their villages.
60 Kiriath-baal (which is Kiriath-jearim) and Rabbah; two cities with their villages.
61 In the desert, Beth-arabah, Midin, Shecakah,
62 Nibshan, the City of Salt, and Engedi; six cities with their villages.
63 But the people of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; and the Jebusite has remained in Jerusalem with the children of Judah to this day.

Joshua Chapter 16

Territory of Ephraim and Manasseh

1 The lot was for the sons of Joseph from the Jordan of Jericho to the waters of Jericho toward the east, toward the desert that goes up from Jericho through the mountains of Bethel.
2 And from Bethel it goes out to Luz, and passes along the territory of the Archites to Ataroth,
3 and goes down westward to the territory of the Japhlethites, to the border of Beth Horon the lower one, and to Gezer; and goes out to sea.
4 So Joseph’s sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, received his inheritance.
5 And as for the territory of the children of Ephraim by their families, the border of his inheritance on the east side was from Ataroth-adar to Beth-horon above.
6 He continues the border to the sea, and to Micmetath in the north, and turns eastward to Taanath-silo, and from there he passes to Janoah.
7 From Janoah he goes down to Atarot and Naarat, and touches Jericho and comes out to the Jordan.
8 And from Tapua he turns toward the sea, to the brook of Cana, and goes out to the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by his families.
9 There were also cities that were set apart for the children of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all cities with their villages.
10 But they did not drive out the Canaanite who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanite remained in the midst of Ephraim, until today, and was a tributary.

Joshua Chapter 17

1 Lots were also cast for the tribe of Manasseh, because he was Joseph’s firstborn. Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh and father of Gilead, who was a man of war, had Gilead and Bashan.
2 Lots were also cast for the other sons of Manasseh according to his families: the sons of Abiezer, the sons of Helech, the sons of Asriel, the sons of Shechem, the sons of Hepher, and the sons of Shemida; These were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph, by his family.
3 But Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but daughters, whose names are these: Maala, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
4 These came before Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the princes, and said, The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers. And he gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, according to the word of the Lord.
5 And Manasseh received ten shares in addition to the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan,
6 because Manasseh’s daughters had an inheritance among his sons; and the land of Gilead belonged to the other sons of Manasseh.
7 And the territory of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmetath, which is opposite Shechem; and goes south, to those who live in TapĆŗa.
8 The land of Tapua was Manasseh’s; But Tapua itself, which is by the border of Manasseh, is of the sons of Ephraim.
9 This boundary descends to the brook of Cana, towards the south of the brook. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh; and the border of Manasseh is from the north of the same brook, and the outlet from it is to the sea.
10 Ephraim to the south, and Manasseh to the north, and the sea is its border; and it meets Asher to the north, and Issachar to the east.
11 Manasseh also had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and to the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; three provinces.
12 But the sons of Manasseh could not drive out those from those cities; and the Canaanite persisted in living in that land.
13 But when the children of Israel were strong enough, they made the Canaanites tributary, but they did not drive them out.

14 And the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, Why have you given us one lot and one portion for an inheritance, since we are so great a people, and the Lord has blessed us until now?
15 And Joshua answered them, If you are such a great people, go up to the forest and settle there in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaim, since Mount Ephraim is too narrow for you.
16 And the sons of Joseph said, This mountain will not be enough for us; and all the Canaanites who inhabit the land of the plain have iron chariots; those who are in Bethshean and in its villages, and those who are in the valley of Jezreel.
17 Then Joshua answered the house of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, You are a great people, and have great power; You will not have a single part,
18 but that mountain will be yours; for although it is a forest, you will clear it and possess it to its furthest limits; for you will drive out the Canaanite, even though he has ironed chariots, and even though he is strong.

Joshua Chapter 18

Territories of other tribes

1 The whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered together at Shiloh, and there they set up the tabernacle of the congregation, after the land was subdued to them.
2 But there were seven tribes left of the children of Israel, to whom they had not yet divided their possession.
3 And Joshua said to the children of Israel, How long will you neglect to come to possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers has given you?
4 Appoint three men from each tribe, that I may send them, and that they may arise and travel through the land, and describe it according to their inheritances, and return to me.
5 And they will divide it into seven parts; and Judah will remain in his territory to the south, and those of the house of Joseph in their territory to the north.
6 You therefore shall divide the land into seven parts, and bring the description to me here, and I will cast lots for you here before the Lord our God.
7 But the Levites have no share among you, for the priesthood of the Lord is their inheritance; Gad also and Reuben, and the half tribe of Manasseh, have already received their inheritance beyond the Jordan to the east, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave them.
8 So the men arose and went; And Joshua commanded those who were going to mark out the land, saying to them, Go, go about the land and mark it out, and return to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the Lord in Shiloh.
9 So those men went and traveled through the land, marking it by cities in seven parts in a book, and they returned to Joshua to the camp in Shiloh.
10 And Joshua cast lots for them before the LORD in Shiloh; and there Joshua divided the land to the children of Israel by their portions.
11 And the lot was determined for the tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families; and the territory allotted to it remained between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.
12 Their border was on the north side from the Jordan, and went up to the side of Jericho on the north; Then he goes up the mountain towards the west, and comes out into the desert of Beth-aven.
13 From there he passes in the direction of Luz, to the south side of Luz (which is Bethel), and descends from Atarot-adar to the mountain that is south of Beth-horon the lower one.
14 And it turns westward on the south side of the mountain that is before Beth-horon on the south; and he comes to go out to Kiriath-baal (which is Kiriath-jearim), a city of the children of Judah. This is the west side.
15 The south side is from the end of Kiriathjearim, and goes out to the west, to the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah;
16and this border descends to the end of the mountain that is before the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is on the north in the valley of Rephaim; Then it descends into the valley of Hinnom, on the south side of the Jebusite, and from there descends to the spring of Rogel.

17 Then he turns towards the north and goes out to En-shemesh, and from there to Geliloth, which is before the Ascent of Adumim, and goes down to the stone of Bohan son of Reuben,
18 and passes over to the side that is opposite the Arabah , and descends to the Arabah.
19 And the border passes to the north side of Beth-hogla, and ends in the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan; This is the southern limit.
20 And the Jordan was the border on the east side. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, according to their families, according to their families.
21 The cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, by their families, were Jericho, Beth-hogla, the valley of Cassis,
22 Beth-araba, Zemaraim, Bethel,
23 Avim, Parah, Ophrah,
24 Kefar-haamoni , Hophni and Geba; twelve cities with their villages;
25 Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth,
26 Mizpah, Capphira, Mozah,
27 Rekem, Irpeel, Tarala,
28 Zelah, Eleph, Jebus (which is Jerusalem), Gibeah and Kiriath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin according to his families.

Joshua Chapter 19

1 The second lot fell to Simeon, for the tribe of Simeon’s children according to their families; and his inheritance was among the inheritance of the children of Judah.
2 And they had in their inheritance Beersheba, Sheba, Molada,
3 Hazar-sual, Bala, Ezem,
4 Eltolad, Bethul, Horma,
5 Ziklag, Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susha,
6 Beth-lebaoth and Sharuhen; thirteen cities with their villages;
7 Ain, Rimmon, Ether and Asan; four cities with their villages;
8 and all the villages that were around these cities as far as Baalath-beer, which is Ramat of the Negev. This is the inheritance of the tribe of Simeon’s children according to his families.
9 From the lot of the children of Judah was taken the inheritance of the children of Simeon, because the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them; so the sons of Simeon had their inheritance in the midst of Judah.
10 The third lot fell to the sons of Zebulun according to their families; and the territory of his inheritance was as far as Sarid.
11 And its border goes up toward the west to Maralah, and reaches to Dabesheth, and from there to the brook that is before Jokneam;
12 and turns from Sarid towards the east, towards where the sun rises, to the border of Chislot-tabor, goes out to Daberat, and goes up to Japhia.
13 Passing from there to the east side to Gath-hepher and Ithacazin, he goes out to Rimmon, surrounding Nea.
14 Then, to the north, the border turns towards Hanaton, coming out into the valley of Jephteel;
15 and covers Catath, Naalal, Simron, Idala and Bethlehem; twelve cities with their villages.
16 This is the inheritance of the sons of Zebulun according to his families; these cities with their villages.
17 The fourth lot belonged to Issachar, to the sons of Issachar according to his families.
18 And their territory was Jezreel, Chesulot, Shunem,
19 Hafaraim, Sihon, Anaharath,
20 Rabit, Chision, Abez,
21 Remeth, En-ganim, En-hada and Beth-pases.
22 And this border reaches to Tabor, Sahazima and Beth-shemesh, and ends at the Jordan; sixteen cities with their villages.
23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to his families; these cities with their villages.
24 The fifth lot went to the tribe of the sons of Asher according to his families.
25 And their territory included Helkath, Hali, Bethen, Acshaph,
26 Alamelech, Amad, and Misheal; and reaches Carmel in the west, and Sihorlibnat.
27Then it turns east to Beth-dagon and reaches Zebulun, to the valley of Jephteel to the north, to Beth-emech and Neiel, and goes out to Cabul to the north.
28 And it encompasses Hebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Cana, even to great Sidon.
29 From there this border turns towards Ramah, and to the fortified city of Tyre, and turns towards Hosa, and goes out to the sea from the territory of Achzib.
30 It also includes Umma, Aphek and Rehob; twenty-two cities with their villages.
31 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Asher according to his families; these cities with their villages.
32 The sixth lot went to the sons of Naphtali according to his families.
33 And he covered his territory from Heleph, Alon-saananim, Adaminekeb, and Jabneel, to Lacum, and out to the Jordan.
34 And the border turned towards the west to Aznot-tabor, and from there it passed to Hucok, and reached to Zebulun in the south, and to the west it bordered with Asher, and with Judah by the Jordan towards where the sun rises. .

35 And the fortified cities are Siddim, Zer, Hamath, Rakath, Cinereth,
36 Adama, Ramah, Hazor,
37 Kedesh, Edrei, En-hazor,
38 Iron, Migdal-el, Horem, Beth-anath and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages.
39 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to his families; these cities with their villages.
40 The seventh lot fell to the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families.
41 And the territory of his inheritance was Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir-shemesh,
42 Shaalabim, Aijalon, Jethlah,
43 Elon, Timnath, Ekron,
44 Eltek, Gibbethon, Baalath,
45 Jehud, Bene-berach, Gath-rimmon,
46 MejarcĆ³n and RacĆ³n, with the territory in front of Joppa.
47 And the children of Dan lacked territory; And the sons of Dan went up and fought against Lesem, and taking it, they smote it with the edge of the sword, and took possession of it and lived in it; and they called Lesem Dan, after the name of Dan his father.
48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families; these cities with their villages.
49 And when they had finished dividing the land as an inheritance throughout their territories, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun in their midst;
50 According to the word of the Lord, they gave him the city he asked for, Timnath-sera, in Mount Ephraim; and he rebuilt the city and lived in it.
51 These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers, gave by lot for possession to the tribes of the children of Israel in Shiloh, before the Lord, at the entrance of the tabernacle of the congregation. ; and they finished dividing the land

Joshua Chapter 20

Joshua points out cities of refuge

1 The LORD spoke to Joshua, saying:
2 Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: Appoint for yourselves the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses,
3 so that the murderer who kills someone by accident may take shelter there and not knowingly; and they will serve as your refuge against the avenger of blood.
4 And whoever takes refuge in one of those cities, he will appear at the gate of the city, and will explain his reasons in the ears of the elders of that city; and they will take him into the city and give him a place to live with them.
5 If the avenger of blood follows him, they will not deliver the murderer into his hand, because he wounded his neighbor by accident, and had no enmity with him before.
6 And he will remain in that city until he appears in judgment before the congregation, and until the death of him who was high priest at that time; then the murderer will be able to return to his city and to his house and to the city from which he fled.
7 Then they appointed Kedesh in Galilee, in mount Naphtali, Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (which is Hebron) in mount Judah.
8 And on the other side of the Jordan east of Jericho, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain of the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan of the tribe of Manasseh.
9 These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the foreigner who lived among them, so that anyone who hurt anyone by accident might shelter in them, so that he would not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he appeared before the congregation.

Joshua Chapter 21

Cities of the Levites

1 The leaders of the fathers of the Levites came to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel,
2 and spoke to them in Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The Lord commanded Through Moses, cities were given to us to live in, with their common lands for our livestock.
3 Then the children of Israel gave of their own inheritance to the Levites, according to the commandment of the Lord, these cities with their common lands.
4 And the lot fell on the families of the Kohathites; And the sons of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, obtained by lot from the tribe of Judah, from the tribe of Simeon, and from the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.
5 And the other sons of Kohath obtained by lot ten cities from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half tribe of Manasseh.
6 The sons of Gershom obtained by lot, from the families of the tribe of Issachar, of the tribe of Asher, of the tribe of Naphtali, and of the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.
7 The sons of Merari according to their families obtained twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun.
8 So the children of Israel gave these cities with their suburbs to the Levites by lot, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.
9 From the tribe of the children of Judah, and from the tribe of the children of Simeon, they gave these cities that were named,
10 which the children of Aaron obtained from the families of Kohath, from the children of Levi; because for them it was luck in the first place.
11 They gave them Kiriath-arba of the father of Anak, which is Hebron, in mount Judah, with its common lands around it.
12 But they gave the countryside of the city and its villages to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
13 And to the sons of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its suburbs as a city of refuge for murderers; Furthermore, Libna with its common lands,
14 Jathir with its common lands, Estemoah with its common lands,
15 Holon with its common lands, Debir with its common lands,
16 Ain with its common lands, Juthah with its common lands, and Beth-shemesh with its common lands; nine cities of these two tribes;
17 And of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with his suburbs, Geba with his suburbs,
18 Anathoth with his suburbs, Almon with his suburbs; four cities.
19 All the cities of the priests, Aaron’s sons, are thirteen with their suburbs.
20 But the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites, those who remained of the children of Kohath, received by lot cities from the tribe of Ephraim.
twenty-oneThey gave them Shechem with its suburbs, in Mount Ephraim, as a city of refuge for murderers; also Gezer with its suburbs,
22 Kibsaim with its suburbs, and Beth-horon with its suburbs; four cities.
23 Of the tribe of Dan, Eltek with his suburbs, Gibbethon with his suburbs,
24 Aijalon with his suburbs, and Gathrimmon with his suburbs; four cities.
25 And of the half tribe of Manasseh, Taanak with his suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with his suburbs; two cities.
26 All the cities for the rest of the families of the children of Kohath were ten with their suburbs.
27 To the sons of Gershom of the families of the Levites, they gave from the half tribe of Manasseh Golan in Bashan with its suburbs as a city of refuge for murderers, and also Beestera with its suburbs; two cities.
28 Of the tribe of Issachar, Kishon with his suburbs, Daberath with his suburbs,

29 Jarmuth with its suburbs, and En-ganim with its suburbs; four cities.
30 Of the tribe of Asher, Misheal with his suburbs, Abdon with his suburbs,
31 Helkath with his suburbs, and Rehob with his suburbs; four cities.
32 And from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its suburbs as a city of refuge for murderers, and also Hamothdor with its suburbs and Cartan with its suburbs; three cities.
33 All the cities of the Gershonites by their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs.

34 And to the families of the sons of Merari, the Levites that remained, were given out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its suburbs, Carthah with its suburbs,
35 Dimnah with its suburbs, and Naalal with its suburbs; four cities.
36 And of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with his suburbs, Jahaza with his suburbs,
37 Kademoth with his suburbs, and Mephaat with his suburbs; four cities.
38 Of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth Gilead with its suburbs as a city of refuge for murderers; also, Mahanaim with its suburbs,
39 Heshbon with its suburbs, and Jazer with its suburbs; four cities.
40 All the cities of the children of Merari by their families, which remained of the families of the Levites, became by their lot twelve cities.
41 And all the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their suburbs.
42 And these cities were separated one from another, each with its suburbs around it; so it was with all these cities.

Israel occupies the land

43 Thus the LORD gave to Israel all the land which he had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and dwelt in it.
44 And the LORD gave them rest all around, according to all that he had sworn to his parents; and none of all his enemies could stand against them, because the Lord gave all his enemies into his hands.
45 There was no lack of word of all the good promises that Jehovah had made to the house of Israel; everything was fulfilled.

Joshua Chapter 22

The altar by the Jordan

1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh,
2 and said to them, “You have kept everything that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in everything that I have commanded you.” .
3 You have not left your brothers in this long time until this day, but you have been careful to keep the commandments of the Lord your God.
4 Now therefore, that the LORD your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised, return, return to your tents, to the land of your possessions, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan.
5 Only be diligent to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: that you love the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways; that you keep his commandments, and follow him, and serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
6 And having blessed them, Joshua sent them away, and they went to his tents.
7 Moses had also given possession in Bashan to the half tribe of Manasseh; But to the other half Joshua gave an inheritance among his brothers on this side of the Jordan, to the west; and these also Joshua sent to his tents, after he had blessed them.
8 And he spoke to them, saying: Return to your tents with great riches, with much livestock, with silver, with gold, and bronze, and many garments; Share with your brothers the spoils of your enemies.
9 So the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, separating themselves from the children of Israel, from Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possessions, which they had taken possession of according to the commandment of Jehovah through Moses.
10 And when they came to the borders of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of great appearance.
11 And the children of Israel heard that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh had built an altar in front of the land of Canaan, on the border of the Jordan, on the side of the children of Israel.
12 When the children of Israel heard this, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered together at Shiloh to go up to fight against them.
13 And the children of Israel sent the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh to the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,
14 and ten princes with him: one prince for each father’s house of all the tribes of Israel, each of whom was head of his father’s house among the thousands of Israel.
15 And they went to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and spoke to them, saying,
16 Thus saith the whole congregation of the Lord, What transgression is this, whereby ye transgress against the God of Israel to turn you away today from following Jehovah, building you an altar to rebel against Jehovah?
17 Has not the iniquity of Peor, from which we are not yet cleansed to this day, by which mortality came in the congregation of Jehovah, been sufficient
for you to turn away today from following Jehovah? You rebel today against Jehovah, and tomorrow he will be angry against the entire congregation of Israel.
19 If you think that the land of your possession is unclean, move to the land of the Lord’s possession, where the tabernacle of the Lord is, and take possession among us; But do not rebel against the Lord, nor rebel against us, building yourselves an altar besides the altar of the Lord our God.
20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit transgression in the accursed thing, and wrath come upon the whole congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.

21 Then the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered and said to the leaders of the thousands of Israel,
22 The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, he knows, and he makes known to Israel : If it was because of rebellion or transgression against Jehovah, do not save us today.
23 If we have built ourselves an altar to turn from Jehovah, or to sacrifice a burnt offering or an offering, or to offer peace offerings on it, may Jehovah himself require it of us.
24 We did it rather for fear that tomorrow your children will say to our children, What have you to do with the Lord God of Israel?
25 The Lord has set the Jordan as a boundary between us and you, O children of Reuben and children of Gad; you have no part in Jehovah; and thus your children would make our children stop fearing Jehovah.
26 Therefore we said, Let us now build an altar, not for a burnt offering nor for a sacrifice,
27 but that it may be a testimony between us and you, and among those who will come after us, that we can do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices and with our peace offerings; and let not your children say to ours tomorrow, ‘You have no part in Jehovah.’
28 We therefore said: If it happens that such will be said to us, or to our generations in the future, then we will answer: Look at the simile of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but that it might be testimony between us and you.
29 Never shall it come to pass that we rebel against Jehovah, or that we depart today from following Jehovah, building an altar for burnt offerings, for offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Jehovah our God that is before his tabernacle.
30 When Phinehas the priest and the princes of the congregation, and the leaders of the thousands of Israel who were with him, heard the words spoken by the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh, it seemed good to them.
31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, Today we have understood that the Lord is among us, since you have not attempted this treachery against the Lord. Now you have delivered the children of Israel from the hand of the Lord.
32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, left the children of Reuben and the children of Gad, and returned from the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, to whom they gave the answer.
33And the matter seemed good to the children of Israel, and the children of Israel blessed God; and they spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land where the children of Reuben and the children of Gad dwelt.
34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad named the altar Ed; for it is a testimony among us that Jehovah is God.

Joshua Chapter 23

Joshua's Exhortation to the People

1 It came to pass, many days after the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their enemies around, that Joshua, being now old and advanced in years,
2 called all Israel, its elders, its princes, its judges, and its officials, and He said: I am already old and advanced in years.
3 And you have seen everything that the Lord your God has done to all these nations because of you; for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you.
4 Behold, I have distributed to you by lot, as an inheritance for your tribes, these nations, both those destroyed and those that remain, from the Jordan to the Great Sea, toward where the sun sets.
5 And the Lord your God will drive them out from before you, and drive them out from before you; and you will possess their lands, as the Lord your God has told you.
6 Therefore be very diligent to observe and do everything that is written in the book of the law of Moses, not turning from it to the right or to the left;
7 so that you do not mix with these nations that are left with you, nor mention or swear by the name of their gods, nor serve them, nor bow down to them.
8 But you will follow the Lord your God, as you have done until today.
9 For the Lord has cast out great and strong nations before you, and until today no one has been able to stand before your face.
10 One man of you will pursue a thousand; for it is the Lord your God who fights for you, as he told you.

11 Therefore guard your souls diligently, that you may love the Lord your God.
12 For if you separate yourself, and join yourself to the remnant of these nations that are left with you, and if you make marriages with them, mixing yourselves with them, and they with you,
13 know that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they will be a snare to you, a stumbling block, a scourge to your sides and thorns to your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the Lord your God has given you.

14 And behold, I am about to enter today into the way of the whole earth; Acknowledge, therefore, with all your heart and with all your soul, that not a word has been missing of all the good words that Jehovah your God had spoken about you; They have all happened to you, not one of them has been missing.
15 But just as every good word that Jehovah your God spoke to you has come upon you, so Jehovah will bring every evil word upon you until he destroys you from the good land that Jehovah your God has given you,
16 if you transgress the covenant of Jehovah. your God who has commanded you, going and honoring other gods, and bowing down to them. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land that he has given you.

Joshua Chapter 24

Joshua's Farewell Speech

1 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called the elders of Israel, their princes, their judges, and their officials; and they appeared before God.
2 And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Your ancestors dwelt of old on the other side of the river, that is, Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor; and they served strange gods.
3 And I took your father Abraham from beyond the river, and brought him throughout all the land of Canaan, and increased his descendants, and gave him Isaac.
4 To Isaac, Jacob and Esau. And to Esau I gave mount Seir, that he might possess it; but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and smote Egypt, according to what I did in the midst of it, and then I brought you out.
6 I brought your fathers out of Egypt; and when they came to the sea, the Egyptians followed your fathers to the Red Sea with chariots and cavalry.
7 And when they cried to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and caused the sea to come upon them, and it covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. Afterwards you were many days in the desert.
8 I brought you into the land of the Amorites, who lived beyond the Jordan, who fought against you; but I delivered them into your hands, and you possessed their land, and I destroyed them from before you.
9 Then Balak son of Zippor, king of the Moabites, arose and fought against Israel; and he sent for Balaam the son of Beor, that he might curse you.
10 But I would not listen to Balaam, so I blessed you repeatedly, and delivered you from his hands.
11 You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, and the inhabitants of Jericho fought against you: the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I delivered them into your hands.
12 And I sent gadflies before you, and they drove them out from before you, that is, the two kings of the Amorites; not with your sword, nor with your bow.
13 And I gave you the land for which you worked nothing, and the cities which you did not build, in which you dwell; and of the vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant, you eat.
14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him with integrity and truth; and put away from among you the gods whom your fathers served on the other side of the river, and in Egypt; and serve the Lord.
15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourself today whom you will serve; whether to the gods whom your fathers served, when they were on the other side of the river, or to the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live; but I and my house will serve the Lord.
16Then the people answered and said, Never such a thing come to pass, that we leave Jehovah to serve other gods;
17 For the LORD our God is the one who brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; who has done these great signs, and who has kept us all along the way where we have walked, and in all the towns through which we passed.
18 And the LORD drove out from before us all the people, and the Amorites that dwelt in the land; We therefore also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.
19 Then Joshua said to the people, You cannot serve the Lord, for he is a holy God and a jealous God; He will not suffer your rebellions and your sins.
20 If you forsake the LORD and serve other gods, he will turn and do you evil, and he will consume you, after he has done good to you.
21 The people then said to Joshua, No, but we will serve the Lord.
22 And Joshua answered the people, You are witnesses against yourselves, that you have chosen the Lord to serve him. And they answered: We are witnesses.

23 Now therefore put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord God of Israel.

24 And the people said to Joshua, We will serve the Lord our God, and obey his voice.
25 Then Joshua made a covenant with the people on the same day, and he gave them statutes and laws in Shechem.
26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and taking a large stone, he lifted it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord.
27 And Joshua said to all the people, Behold, this stone will serve as a witness for us, because it has heard all the words that the Lord has spoken to us; He will therefore be a witness against you, so that you do not lie against your God.
28 And Joshua sent to the people, each one to possess it.

Death of Joshua

29 After these things Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old.
30 And they buried him in his field at Timnath-sera, which is in mount Ephraim, north of mount Gaash.
31 And Israel served the LORD all the time of Joshua, and all the time of the elders who survived Joshua and who knew all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.

Burial of Joseph's bones at Shechem

32 And they buried in Shechem the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel had brought from Egypt, in the part of the field which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money; and it was the possession of the sons of Joseph.

Death of Eleazar

33 Eleazar son of Aaron also died, and they buried him on the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given to him on Mount Ephraim.
