1 Book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.
2 Abraham begat Isaac, Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat Judah and his brothers.
3 Judah begat of Tamar Perez and Zara, Perez begat Esrom, and Esrom begat Aram.
4 Aram begat Aminadab, Aminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon.
5 Salmon begat Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begat Obed by Ruth, and Obed begat Isa.
6 Jesse begat King David, and King David begat Solomon, by whom she became the wife of Uriah.
7 Solomon begat Rehoboam, Rehoboam begat Abijah, and Abijah begat Asa.
8 Asa begat Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begat Jehoram, and Joram begat Uzziah.
9 Uzziah begat Jotham, Jotham begat Ahaz, and Ahaz begat Hezekiah.
10 Hezekiah begat Manasseh, Manasseh begat Ammon, and Ammon begat Josiah.
11 Josiah became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
12 After the exile to Babylon, Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel.
13 Zerubbabel begat Abiud, Abiud begat Eliakim, and Eliakim begat Azor.
14 Azor begat Zadok, Zadok begat Akim, and Akim begat Eliud.
15 Eliud begat Eleazar, Eleazar begat Mattan, Mattan begat Jacob;
16 And Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, called the Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen; and from the deportation to Babylon until Christ, fourteen.

Birth of Jesus Christ

18 The birth of Jesus Christ was like this: While his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to have conceived by the Holy Spirit.
19 Joseph, her husband, because he was just and did not want to disgrace her, wanted to leave her secretly.
20 And as he thought about this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 And she will give birth to a son, and you will call his name JESUS, because he will save his people from their sins.
22 All this happened to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
23 Behold, a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call his name Immanuel, which is translated: God with us.
24 And when Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and received his wife.
25 But he did not know her until she gave birth to her firstborn son; and he named him JESUS.

Matthew Chapter 2

The visit of the magicians

1 When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,
2 saying, Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and we have come to worship him.
3 When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when all the chief priests and the scribes of the people were summoned, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.
5 They said to him: In Bethlehem of Judea; for thus it is written by the prophet:
6 And you, Bethlehem, of the land of Judah, are not the least among the princes of Judah; For out of you will come a guide, Who will shepherd my people Israel.
7 Then Herod, secretly calling the wise men, diligently inquired from them the time of the appearance of the star;
8 And sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go there and inquire carefully about the child; and when you find him, let me know, so that I also may go and worship him.
9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, until it came and stopped over where the child was.
10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with great joy.
11 And when they entered the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
12 But being warned by revelation in a dream not to return to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route.

Killing of children

13 After they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, Arise and take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for it will come to pass that Herod will look for the child to kill him.
14 And he, waking up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt,
15 and remained there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt I called my Son.
16 Herod then, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was very angry, and he ordered the killing of all the children under two years of age in Bethlehem and in all its surroundings, according to the time that he had inquired of the wise men.
17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, when he said:

18 A voice was heard in Ramah, Great lamentation, weeping and moaning; Rachel weeping for her children, and she did not want to be consoled, because they perished.
19 But after Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in Egypt in a dream,
20 saying, “Arise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the death of the child are dead.” .
21 Then he arose, and took the child and his mother, and came to the land of Israel.
22 But hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea instead of Herod his father, he was afraid to go there; But warned by revelation in a dream, he went to the region of Galilee,
23 and came and lived in the city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he should be called a Nazarene.

Matthew Chapter 3

Preaching of John the Baptist

1 In those days came John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
2 and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 For this is he of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke, when he said: The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, Make straight his paths.
4 And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and had a leather belt around his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 And Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the province around the Jordan came out to him,
6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 When he saw that many of the Pharisees and Sadducees were coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You generation of vipers!” Who has shown you how to run away from the coming rage?
8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,
9 and do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father; For I tell you that God is able to raise children to Abraham even from these stones.
10 And now the ax is also placed at the root of the trees; Therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 I truly baptize you with water for repentance; but he who comes after me, whose shoes I am not worthy to wear, he is mightier than I; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
12 His fan is in his hand, and it will cleanse his threshing floor; and he will gather his wheat into the barn, and he will burn the chaff with fire that will never be quenched.

The baptism of Jesus

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.
14 But John opposed him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?
15 But Jesus answered him, Let it be now, for thus it is fitting that we fulfill all righteousness. Then he left him.
16 And Jesus, after he was baptized, immediately came up out of the water; and behold, heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and coming upon him.
17 And there was a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Matthew Chapter 4

Temptation of Jesus

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And after he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
3 And the tempter came to him and said, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.
4 He answered and said, It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and said to him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down; for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, and, In his hands they will uphold you, so that you do not dash your foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said to him: It is also written: You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.
8 Again the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory,
9 and said to him: All this I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.
10 Then Jesus said to him, Go away, Satan, for it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only you shall serve.
11 The devil then left him; and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

Jesus begins his ministry

12 When Jesus heard that John was in prison, he returned to Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum, a maritime city, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
14 so that what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying:
15 Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 The people sitting in darkness saw great light; And to those who sat in the region of the shadow of death, Light shone.
17 From then on Jesus began to preach and say: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
18 As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; because they were fishermen.
19 And he said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.

20 They immediately left their nets and followed him.
21 Passing on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee his father, mending his nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the boat and their father and followed him.
23 And Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and disease among the people.
24 And the fame of him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to him all those who had ailments, those afflicted with various diseases and torments, those possessed by demons, lunatics and paralytics; and he healed them.
25 And he followed him with many people from Galilee, from the Decapolis, from Jerusalem, from Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

Matthew Chapter 5

The Sermon on the Mount: The Beatitudes

1 Seeing the crowd, he went up the mountain; and sitting down, his disciples came to him.
2 And opening his mouth he taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you for my sake, and say all kinds of evil against you, lying.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven; for thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The salt of the earth

13 You are the salt of the earth; But if the salt vanishes, with what will it be salted? It is no longer good for anything, except to be cast out and trampled by men.

The light of the world

14 You are the light of the world; A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do you light a light and put it under a bushel, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
16 Let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Jesus and the law

17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abrogate, but to fulfill.
18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle will pass from the law, until everything is fulfilled.
19 Therefore whoever breaks one of these least commandments and teaches men so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them, he will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness is greater than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus and anger

21 You have heard that it was said to the ancients: You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ to his brother, will be guilty before the council; and whoever says to him, ‘You fool,’ will be exposed to hell fire.
23 Therefore, if you bring your offering to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24 leave your offering there before the altar, and go, first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.
25 Come to an agreement with your adversary quickly, while you are with him on the way, lest the adversary hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
26 Truly I tell you, you will not leave there until you pay the last farthing.

Jesus and adultery

27 You have heard that it was said: You shall not commit adultery.
28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in her heart.
29 Therefore, if your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it away from you; For it is better for you that one of your members perish, and not for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
30 And if your right hand causes you to fall, cut it off and throw it away from you; For it is better for you that one of your members perish, and not for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

Jesus and divorce

31 It was also said: Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.
32 But I say to you that whoever divorces her wife, except for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery; and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Jesus and the oaths

33 Furthermore you have heard that it was said to the ancients: You shall not perswear, but you shall fulfill your oaths to the Lord.
34 But I say to you: Do not swear at all; nor by heaven, because it is the throne of God;
35 nor by the earth, because it is his footstool; nor for Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.
36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black.
37 But let it be your speech: Yes, yes; no no; because what is more than this comes from evil.

love towards enemies

38 You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
39 But I say to you: Do not resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also;
40 And whoever wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him also have your cloak;
41 And whoever forces you to carry a load for one mile, go with him two.
42 Give to anyone who asks you; and whoever wants to borrow from you, do not refuse.
43 You have heard that it was said: You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
44 But I say to you: Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you;
45 that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven, who makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t publicans also do the same?
47 And if you greet only your brothers, what do you do more? Do not the Gentiles also do so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Matthew Chapter 6

Jesus and alms

1 Beware of doing your righteousness before men, to be seen by them; Otherwise you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 Therefore when you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, to be praised by men; I swear you that the have already got their reward.
3 But when you give alms, let your left hand not know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you in public.

Jesus and prayer

5 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, to be seen by men; I swear you that the have already got their reward.
6 But when you pray, go into your room, and having closed the door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you in public.
7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions, like the Gentiles, who think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 Therefore do not become like them; because your Father knows what things you need before you ask him.
9 Therefore you will pray like this: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done, as it is in heaven, so on earth.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you;
15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses.

Jesus and fasting

16 When you fast, do not be austere, like the hypocrites; because they change their faces to show men that they fast; I swear you that the have already got their reward.
17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
18 so that you do not show to men that you fast, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you in public.

Treasures in heaven

19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal;
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be

The body lamp

22 The lamp of the body is the eye; so, if your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light;
23 But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be in darkness. So, if the light that is in you is darkness, how much darkness will there be?

God and riches

24 No one can serve two masters; for he will either hate the one and love the other, or esteem the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and riches

The desire and anxiety

25 Therefore I say to you: Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, what you have to wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the air, for they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth much more than them?
27 And which of you, by working hard, can add one cubit to his stature?
28 And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;
29 But I tell you, not even Solomon with all his glory was dressed like one of them.
30 And if God clothes the grass of the field that is today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not do much more to you, O you of little faith?
31 Therefore do not worry, saying, What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear?
32 For the Gentiles seek all these things; but your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and the righteousness thereof, and all these things will be added to you.
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day is enough for its own evil.

Matthew Chapter 7

Judging others

1 Do not judge, lest you be judged.
2 For with the judgment with which you judge, you will be judged, and with the measure with which you measure, it will be measured to you.
3 And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
4 Or how will you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, and behold, the plank is in your eye?
5 Hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
6 Do not give what is holy to dogs, nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Prayer, and the golden rule

7 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.
9 What man is there among you, that if his son asks him for bread, he will give her a stone?
10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a snake?
11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him?
12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do so to them; because this is the law and the prophets.

The narrow door

13 Enter through the narrow gate; for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it;
14 For narrow is the gate, and difficult is the way that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

By their fruits you will know them

15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
16 By their fruits you will know them. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles?
17 Thus every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20 Therefore, by their fruits you will know them.

I never met you

21 Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many miracles in your name?
23 And then I will declare to them: I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of iniquity.

The two foundations

24 Therefore, whoever hears these words of mine and does them, I will compare him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 The rain came down, and the rivers came, and the winds blew, and beat against that house; and it did not fall, because it was founded on the rock.
26 But whoever hears these words of mine and does not do them, I will compare him to a foolish man, who built his house on the sand;
27 And the rain fell, and the rivers came, and the winds blew, and beat against that house; and he fell, and his ruin was great.
28 And when Jesus had finished these words, the people were amazed at his doctrine;
29 because he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.

Matthew Chapter 8

Jesus heals a leper

1 When Jesus came down from the mountain, many people followed him.
2 And behold, a leper came and fell down before him, saying, Lord, if you wish, you can cleanse me.
3 Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will; Be clean. And immediately his leprosy disappeared.
4 Then Jesus said to him, See, tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and present the offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.

Jesus heals a centurion's servant

5 As Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, beseeching him,
6 and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home, paralyzed, severely tormented.”
7 And Jesus said to him, I will go and heal him.
8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof; Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
9 For I also am a man under authority, and I have soldiers under me; and I say to this one: Go, and go; and to the other: Come, and it comes; and to my servant: Do this, and he does it.
10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled, and said to those who followed him: Truly I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.
11 And I tell you that many will come from the east and the west, and will sit with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven;
12 but the children of the kingdom will be cast into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, Go, and be it unto you as you believed. And his servant was healed in that same hour.

Jesus heals Peter's mother-in-law

14 Jesus came to Peter’s house and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
15 And she touched her hand, and her fever left her; and she arose, and she served them.
16 And when night came, they brought to him many demon-possessed people; and with the word he cast out the demons, and healed all the sick;
17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, saying, He himself took our infirmities, and bore our diseases.

Those who wanted to follow Jesus

18 Seeing Jesus surrounded by many people, he ordered them to go to the other side.
19 And a scribe came and said to him, Master, I will follow you wherever you go.
20 Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
21 Another of his disciples said to him, Lord, let me go first and bury my father.
22 Jesus said to him: Follow me; let the dead bury their dead.

Jesus calms the storm

23 And when he entered the boat, his disciples followed him.
24 And behold, a storm arose in the sea so great that the waves covered the boat; but he was sleeping.
25 And his disciples came and woke him up, saying, Lord, save us, for we are perishing!
26 He said to them: Why are you afraid, you of little faith? Then, rising, he rebuked the winds and the sea; and he became great prosperous.
27 And the men marveled, saying, What man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?

The demon-possessed Gadarenes

28 When he reached the other shore, to the land of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming out of the tombs came to meet him, extremely ferocious, so much so that no one could pass along that road.
29 And they cried out, saying, What have you with us, Jesus, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?
30 A herd of many pigs was grazing far from them.
31 And the demons besought him, saying, If you cast us out, let us go to that herd of swine.
32 He said to them, Go. And they went out and went to that herd of pigs; and, behold, the whole herd of swine fell into the sea over a cliff, and perished in the water.
33 And those who kept them fled, and coming to the city, they told all things, and what had happened to the demon-possessed.
34 And the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their vicinity.

Matthew Chapter 9

Jesus heals a paralytic

1 Then Jesus entered the boat, crossed over to the other side, and came to his city.
2 And it came to pass that they brought him a paralyzed man, lying on a bed; And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic: Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven you.
3 Then some of the scribes said within themselves, This man is blaspheming.
4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts, said, Why do you think evil in your hearts?
5 For which is easier, to say: Your sins are forgiven, or to say: Arise and walk?
6 For that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins (then he says to the paralytic): Get up, take up your bed, and go to your house.
7 Then he got up and went to his house.
8 And when the people saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.

Matthew's Call

9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax bench, and he said to him, Follow me. And he got up and followed him.
10 And it came to pass, as he sat at table in the house, that many tax collectors and sinners, who had come, sat down at table with Jesus and his disciples.
11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to the disciples, Why does your Master eat with tax collectors and sinners?
12 When Jesus heard this, he said to them: The healthy do not need a doctor, but the sick do.
13 Go therefore and learn what it means: I desire mercy, and not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.

The question about fasting

14 Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, and your disciples do not fast?
15 Jesus said to them, Can those who are at the wedding mourn while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the husband will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
16 No one puts a patch of new cloth on an old garment; because such a patch pulls on the garment, and the tear becomes worse.
17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins; Otherwise the skins break, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are lost; But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved together.

Jairus's daughter, and the woman who touched Jesus' cloak

18 While he was telling them these things, a prominent man came and worshiped him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.
19 And Jesus arose, and followed him with his disciples.
20 And behold, a woman had been sick with an issue of blood for twelve years; she came up behind her and touched the hem of her cloak;
21 because she said within herself: If I only touch her garment, I will be saved.
22 But Jesus, turning and looking at her, said, Take heart, daughter; your faith has saved you. And the woman was saved from that hour.
23 When Jesus entered the ruler’s house, seeing those who were playing flutes, and the people making a commotion,
He 24 said to them, Get away, because the girl is not dead, but is sleeping. And they made fun of him.
25 But when the people had been driven out, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she stood up.
26 And the report of this spread throughout all that land.

Two blind men receive sight

27 As Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying out and saying, Have mercy on us, Son of David!
28 And when he came to the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them: Do you believe that I can do this? They said: Yes, Lord.
29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus charged them strictly, saying: See that no one knows.
31 But when they went out, they spread his fame throughout all that land.

a mute speaks

32 As they were going out, behold, they brought to him a mute man possessed by a demon.
33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke; and the people marveled, and said, Such a thing has never been seen in Israel.
34 But the Pharisees said, By the prince of demons he casts out demons.

The harvest is much

35 Jesus went through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and disease among the people.
36 And when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them; because they were helpless and scattered like sheep without a shepherd.
37 Then he said to his disciples, The harvest indeed is great, but the workers are few.
38 Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send workers into his harvest.

Matthew Chapter 10

Election of the twelve apostles

1 Then calling his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every sickness and disease.
2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
3 Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the publican, James son of Alpheus, Lebeus, surnamed Thaddeus,
4 Simon the Cananist, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

Mission of the twelve

5 Jesus sent these twelve and gave them instructions, saying, Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans,
6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
7 And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons; you received freely, give freely.
9 Do not provide yourselves with gold, silver, or copper in your belts;
10 neither a bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor shoes, nor a staff; because the worker is worthy of his food.
11 But whatever city or village you enter, find out who is worthy there, and stay there until you leave.
12 And when you enter the house, greet her.
13 And if the house is worthy, your peace will come upon it; but if it is not worthy, your peace will return to you.
14 And if anyone does not receive you or listen to your words, leave that house or city and shake off the dust from your feet.
15 Truly I tell you, on the day of judgment, the punishment will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that city.

Coming persecutions

16 Behold, I am sending you out like sheep in the midst of wolves; Be wise therefore as serpents, and simple as doves.
17 And beware of men, for they will hand you over to the councils, and they will flog you in their synagogues;
18 and you will even be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
19 But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you will speak; because in that hour it will be given to you what you will speak.
20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
21 Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father will hand over his son; and the children will rise up against the parents and put them to death.
22 And you will be hated by all because of my name; but he who endures to the end will be saved.
23 When they persecute you in this city, flee to the other; For truly I tell you, you will not finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24 The disciple is not more than his master, nor the servant more than his master.
25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his master, and for the servant to be like his master. If they called the father of the family Beelzeb, how much more did they call those of his house?

Who should be feared

26 So do not fear them; because there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed; nor hidden, that it should not be known.
27 What I say to you in darkness, say it in the light; and what you hear in the ear, proclaim from the housetops.
28 And do not fear those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy soul and body in hell.
29 Aren’t two sparrows sold for a quarter? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father.
30 For even your hairs are all numbered.
31 So do not fear; You are worth more than many sparrows.
32 Whoever therefore confesses me before men, I will also confess before my Father that he is in heaven.
33 And whoever denies me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven.

Jesus causes division

34 Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I have come to set a man at variance against his father, his daughter against his mother, and his daughter-in-law against his mother-in-law;
36 and the enemies of the man will be those of his house.
37 He who loves father or mother more than me, he is not worthy of me; He who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38 and whoever does not take up his cross and follow me, he is not worthy of me.
39 He who finds his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Rewards

40 He who receives you receives me; and he who receives me, he receives him who sent me.
41 He who receives a prophet because he is a prophet, he will receive a prophet’s reward; and he who receives a righteous man because he is righteous, he will receive a righteous man’s reward.
42 And whoever gives one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, because he is his disciple, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.

Matthew Chapter 11

The messengers of John the Baptist

1 When Jesus finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he left there to teach and preach in their cities.
2 And when John in prison heard the acts of Christ, he sent two of his disciples to him,
3 to ask him, Are you he who is to come, or shall we wait for another?
4 Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John the things which you hear and see.
5 The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the gospel is preached to the poor;
6 and blessed is he who finds no stumbling block in me.
7 While they were leaving, Jesus began to say to the people about John: What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
8 Or what did you go out to see? To a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear fine garments are in the houses of kings.
9 But what did you go out to see? To a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.
11 Truly I say to you, among those who are born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 And if you want to receive him, he is that Elijah who was to come.
15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But to what shall I compare this generation? He is like the boys who sit in the streets, and shout to their companions,
17 saying, We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; We mourned you, and you did not mourn.
18 For John came, neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon.
19 The Son of Man came, eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and a drinker of wine, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified by his children.

Woes upon the unrepentant cities

20 Then he began to rebuke the cities in which he had performed many of his miracles, because they had not repented, saying:
21 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tire and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 Therefore I tell you that on the day of judgment the punishment will be more tolerable for Tire and Sidon than for you.
23 And you, Capernaum, who are lifted up to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have continued to this day.
24 Therefore I tell you that on the day of judgment the punishment will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you.

Come to me and rest

25 At that time, Jesus answered and said: I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you hid these things from the wise and prudent, and revealed them to little children.
26 Yes, Father, because it pleased you so.
27 All things were given to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am meek and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls;
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew Chapter 12

The disciples gather ears of grain on the Sabbath

1 At that time Jesus was going through the fields on a Sabbath day; and his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck ears of grain and eat.
2 When the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, Behold, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.
3 But he said to them, Have you not read what David did, when he and those who were with him were hungry?
4 How did he enter the house of God and eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?
5 Or have you not read in the law, how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?
6 For I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.
7 And if you knew what it means: I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, you would not condemn the innocent;
8 because the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.

The man with the dry hand

9 Passing from there, he came to their synagogue.
10 And, behold, there was one there whose hand was withered; and they asked Jesus, in order to accuse him: Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?
11 He said to them, “What man is there among you who has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath day, he will not lay hold of it and lift it up?”
12 For how much more valuable is a man than a sheep? Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.
13 Then he said to that man, Stretch out your hand. And he stretched it out, and it was restored to him healthy as the other.
14 And the Pharisees came out and took counsel against Jesus to destroy him.

The chosen servant

15 Knowing this, Jesus departed from there; and many people followed him, and he healed them all,
16 and strictly charged them not to discover him;
17 that what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, when he said,
18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; My Beloved, in whom my soul delights; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will announce judgment to the Gentiles.
19 He will not contend, nor shout, Nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
20 He will not break the bruised reed, And he will not quench the smoking flax, Until he brings justice to victory.
21 And the Gentiles will hope in his name.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit

22 Then a demon-possessed man, blind and mute, was brought to him; and he healed him, so that the blind and dumb man could see and speak.
23 And all the people were astonished, and said, Could this be that Son of David?
24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This man does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the prince of demons.
25 Jesus knowing their thoughts, he said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; How then will his kingdom endure?
27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges.
28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29 For how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his possessions unless he first binds him? And then he can plunder his house.
30 He who is not with me is against me; and he who does not gather with me scatters.
31 Therefore I say to you: All sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men; but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven them.

32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, neither in this age nor in the age to come.
33 Either make the tree good, and its fruit good, or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; because the tree is known by the fruit.
34 Generation of vipers! How can you speak good things, being evil? Because of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
35 The good man, from the good treasure of the heart, draws good things; and the bad man, from the bad treasure, gets bad things.
36 But I tell you that for every idle word that men speak, they will give an account of it on the day of judgment.
37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

The evil generation demands a sign

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we desire to see a sign from you.
39 He answered and said to them: An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign; but no sign will be given to him, but the sign of the prophet Jonah.
40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.
41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, there is more than Jonah in this place.
42 The queen of the South will rise in judgment with this generation, and she will condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, there is more than Solomon in this place.

The unclean spirit that returns

43 When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it walks through dry places, seeking rest, and does not find it.
44 Then he says, I will return to my house from which I came; and when he arrives, he finds it unoccupied, swept and decorated.
45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits worse than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. As this may happen to this bad generation.

The mother and brothers of Jesus

46 While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers were outside, and wanted to speak to him.
47 And he said to him, Behold, your mother and your brothers are outside, and they want to speak to you.
48 He answered him who said this to him and said, Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?
49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, Behold my mother and my brothers.
50 For whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Matthew Chapter 13

Parable of the Sower

1 That day Jesus left the house and sat by the sea.
2 And many people gathered to him; And when he entered the boat, he sat down, and all the people were on the beach.
3 And he spoke many things to them in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went out to sow.
4 And while he was sowing, some of the seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and ate it.
5 Some fell on rocky ground, where there was not much soil; and it sprouted quickly, because it had no depth of soil;
6 But when the sun came up, it was burned; and because it had no root, it withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew and choked it.
8 But some fell on good ground and bore fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold.

9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Purpose of parablesPurpose of parables

10 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”
11 And he answered and said unto them, For it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven; but it is not given to them.
12 For to everyone who has, to him will be given, and he will have more; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
13 Therefore I speak to you in parables: because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor understand.
14 So that the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in them, which said: By hearing you will hear, and you will not understand; And seeing ye shall see, and not perceive.
15 For the heart of this people has become thick, And they hear hard with their ears, And they have closed their eyes; So that they do not see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And convert, And I heal them.
16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, because they hear.
17 For truly I say to you, many prophets and righteous people desired to see what you see, and they did not see it; and hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

Jesus explains the parable of the sower

18 Hear you therefore the parable of the sower:
19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the one that was planted by the road.
20 And he who was sown on rocky ground, this is he who hears the word, and immediately receives it with joy;
21 But it has no root in itself, but is of short duration, for when affliction or persecution comes because of the word, immediately it stumbles.
22 He who was sown among thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
23 But he who was sown on good ground, this is he who hears and understands the word, and bears fruit; and he produces a hundred, sixty, and thirty times one.

Parable of the wheat and the tares

24 He told them another parable, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field;
25 But while the men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away.
26 And when the grass came out and bore fruit, then the tares also appeared.
27 Then the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Lord, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where then do you have tares?
28 He said to them: An enemy has done this. And the servants said to him, Do you want us to go and pluck it up?
29 He said to them, No, lest when you uproot the tares, you also uproot the wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest; and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.

Parable of the mustard seed

31 He told them another parable, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field;
32 which indeed is the smallest of all seeds; but when it has grown, it is the largest of the vegetables, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and make nests in its branches.

Parable of the leaven

33 Another parable he told them: The kingdom of heaven is like unto yeast that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until everything was leavened.

Jesus' use of parables

34 Jesus spoke all this in parables to the people, and without parables he did not speak to them;
35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will declare things hidden from the foundation of the world.

Jesus explains the parable of the tares

36 Then, when the crowd had been dismissed, Jesus entered the house; And his disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.”
37 He answered and said to them, He who sows good seed is the Son of Man.
38 The field is the world; The good seed are the children of the kingdom, and the tares are the children of the evil one.
39 The enemy who sowed it is the devil; The harvest is the end of the century; and the reapers are the angels.
40 So as the tares are plucked up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.
41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all those who cause stumbling blocks and those who do iniquity,
42 and they will cast them into the furnace of fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s kingdom. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

The hidden treasure

44 Furthermore, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man finds and hides again; and rejoicing at this, he goes and sells everything he has, and buys that field.

The pearl of great price

45 Also the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking good pearls,
46 who having found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Network

47 Likewise the kingdom of heaven is like a net, which is cast into the sea and gathers all kinds of fish;
48 and once it is full, they take it to the shore; and sitting down, they gather the good in baskets, and the bad they cast out.
49 Thus it will be at the end of the age: the angels will come out and separate the wicked from among the righteous,
50 and throw them into the fiery furnace; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Treasures new and old

51 Jesus said to them: Have you understood all these things? They answered: Yes, Lord.
52 He said to them: Therefore every scribe learned in the kingdom of heaven is like a householder, who brings out of his treasury new things and old things.

Jesus in Nazareth

53 It came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that he departed from there.
54 And when he came to his land, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they marveled, and said, Where does this man have this wisdom and these miracles?
55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
57 And they were scandalized by him. But Jesus said to them: There is no prophet without honor, except in his own country and in his house.
58 And he did not perform many miracles there, because of their unbelief.

Matthew Chapter 14

Death of John the Baptist

1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus,
2 and said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; He has risen from the dead, and that is why these powers act on him.
3 For Herod had arrested John, and had bound him and put him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife;
4 because John said to him: It is not lawful for you to have it.
5 And Herod wanted to kill him, but he feared the people; because they had John as a prophet.
6 But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, Herodias’ daughter danced in her midst, and she pleased Herod,
7 so he promised her with an oath to give her everything she asked for.
8 She, instructed first by her mother, said: Give me here on a plate the head of John the Baptist.
9 Then the king was sad; but because of the oath, and because of those who were with him at table, he ordered that it be given to him,
10 and ordered John to be beheaded in prison.
11 And his head was brought on a plate, and given to the girl; and she introduced her to her mother.
12 Then his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.

Feeding of the five thousand

13 When Jesus heard this, he departed from there in a boat to a deserted and secluded place; and when the people heard it, he followed him on foot from the cities.
14 And Jesus went out, and saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.
15 When it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, The place is desert, and the hour is past; Dismiss the crowd, so that they may go through the villages and buy food.
16 Jesus said to them: You have no need to go; you feed them.
17 And they said, We have here only five loaves and two fish.
18 He said to them, Bring them to me here.
19 Then he commanded the people to lie down on the grass; And taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke, and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowd.
20 And they all ate, and were satisfied; And they picked up what was left of the pieces, twelve baskets full.
21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

Jesus walks on the sea

22 Immediately Jesus made his disciples enter the boat and go ahead of him to the other bank, while he dismissed the crowd.
23 After the crowd had dismissed him, he went up on the mountain to pray separately; and when night came, he was there alone.

24 And now the boat was in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves; because the wind was contrary.
25 But in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them walking on the sea.
26 And the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, A ghost! And they cried out in fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Take heart; I am, do not fear!
28 Then Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, command that I come to you on the water.
29 And he said, Come. And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me!
31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and took hold of him and said to him, “O man of little faith! Why did you hesitate?
32 And when they got into the boat, the wind calmed down.
33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.

Jesus heals the sick in Gennesaret

34 And when the journey was finished, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
35 When the men of that place knew him, they sent word throughout the surrounding country, and brought all the sick to him;
36 and they begged him to let them touch only the hem of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

Matthew Chapter 15

What defiles man

1 Then certain scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,
2 Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? Because they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.
3 And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition?
4 For God commanded, saying: Honor your father and your mother; and: He who curses his father or mother, he must die irrevocably.
5 But you say: Anyone who says to his father or his mother: Everything with which I can help you is my offering to God,
6 he must no longer honor his father or his mother. Thus you have made void the commandment of God by your tradition.
7 Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
8 This people honors me with their lips; But, his heart is away from me.
9 For they honor me in vain, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
10 And calling the multitude to him, he said to them, Hear and understand:
11 Not what enters the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth defiles a man.
12 Then his disciples came and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this word?
13 But he answered and said, Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.
14 Leave them; They are blind guides of the blind; and if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit.
15 Peter answered and said to him, Explain this parable to us.
16 Jesus said: Are you also still without understanding?
17 Don’t you understand that everything that enters the mouth goes into the belly and is thrown into the latrine?
18 But what comes out of the mouth comes out of the heart; and this defiles man.
19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witnesses, blasphemies.
20 These are the things that defile a man; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man.

Faith the Canaanite woman

21 Jesus left there and went to the region of Tire and Sidon.
22 And behold, a Canaanite woman who had come out of that region cried out to him, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!” My daughter is seriously tormented by a demon.
23 But Jesus did not answer him a word. Then his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away, for she cries after us.
24 And he answered and said, I am not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

25 Then she came and bowed before him, saying, Lord, help me!
26 And he answering, she said, It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.
27 And she said, Yes, Lord; But even the little dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.
28 Then Jesus answered and said, O woman, great is your faith; be done with you as you wish. And her daughter was healed from that hour.
29 Jesus passed on from there and came to the Sea of Galilee; and going up on the mountain, he sat there.
30 And he came to him with many people, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the mute, the maimed, and many other sick people; and they laid them at the feet of Jesus, and he healed them;
31 So the crowd marveled, seeing the mute speaking, the maimed healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

Feeding of the four thousand

32 And Jesus, calling his disciples, said, I have compassion on the people, because they have been with me for three days now, and they have nothing to eat; And I do not want to send them fasting, lest they faint on the way.
33 Then his disciples said to him, “Where do we have so much bread in the desert to satisfy such a great crowd?”
34 Jesus said to them: How many loaves do you have? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
35 And he commanded the crowd to lie down on the ground.
36 And taking the seven loaves and the fish, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples, and the disciples to the crowd.
37 And they all ate, and were satisfied; And they picked up what was left of the pieces, seven baskets full.
38 And those who had eaten were four thousand men, not counting women and children.
39 So when he had dismissed the people, he entered the boat and came to the region of Magdala.

Matthew Chapter 16

The demand for a sign

1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to tempt him, and asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
2 But he answered and said to them, When it is evening, you say, Good weather; because the sky has red lights.
3 And in the morning: Today there will be a storm; because the cloudy sky has reds. Hypocrites! that you know how to distinguish the appearance of the sky, but the signs of the times you cannot!
4 The evil and adulterous generation demands a sign; but no sign will be given to him, but the sign of the prophet Jonah. And leaving them, he went away.

The leaven of the Pharisees

5 When his disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring bread.
6 And Jesus said to them, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
7 They thought within themselves, saying, This is because we did not bring bread.
8 And Jesus understanding it, he said to them: Why do you think within yourselves, you of little faith, that you have no bread?
9 Do you still not understand, nor remember the five loaves among five thousand men, and how many baskets you collected?
10 Nor of the seven loaves out of four thousand, and how many baskets did you pick up?
11 How is it that you do not understand that it was not because of the bread that I told you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?
12 Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the leaven of bread, but rather of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter's confession

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that the Son of Man is?
14 They said: Some, John the Baptist; others, Elías; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.
15 He said to them: And you, who do you say that I am?
16 Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 Then Jesus answered him, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
18 And I also tell you, that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
20 Then he commanded his disciples not to tell anyone that he was Jesus the Christ.

Jesus announces his death

21 From then on Jesus began to declare to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes; and be killed, and rise again on the third day.
22 Then Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him, saying, Lord, have mercy on you; In no way will this happen to you.
23 But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because you do not set your sights on the things of God, but on those of men.
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples: If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will find it.
26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul? Or what reward shall a man give for his soul?
27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will repay each one according to his works.
28 Truly I tell you, there are some who stand here who will not taste death until they have seen the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.

Matthew Chapter 17

The transfiguration

1 Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart;
2 and he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, speaking with him.
4 Then Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us that we are here; If you want, let’s make three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
5 While he was still speaking, a cloud of light covered them; and behold, a voice from the cloud said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to him.
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on his face and were greatly afraid.
7 Then Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and do not be afraid.
8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus alone.
9 When they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man rises from the dead.
10 Then his disciples asked him, saying, Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
11 Jesus answered and said to them, Indeed, Elijah is coming first, and he will restore all things.
12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but they did with him whatever they wanted; so also the Son of Man will suffer from them.
13 Then the disciples realized that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

Jesus heals a lunatic boy

14 When they came to the crowd, a man came to him and knelt before him, saying,
15 Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and suffers greatly; because he often falls into the fire, and many times into the water.
16 And I have brought him to your disciples, but they have not been able to heal him.
17 Jesus answered and said, O unbelieving and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring me here.
18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that hour.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus apart, and said, Why could we not cast him out?
20 Jesus said to them: Because of your little faith; For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
21 But this kind does not come out except with prayer and fasting.

Jesus announces his death again

22 While they were in Galilee, Jesus said to them: The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men,
23 and they will kill him; but on the third day he will rise again. And they were very sad.

Temple tax payment

24 When they came to Capernaum, those who received the two drachmas came to Peter and said to him, Does not your Master pay the two drachmas?
25 He said, Yes. And as he entered the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, What do you think, Simon? The kings of the earth, from whom do they collect tributes or taxes? From their sons, or from strangers?
26 Peter answered him, From strangers. Jesus said to him: Therefore the children are exempt.
27 However, so as not to offend them, go to the sea, and cast the hook, and the first fish you catch, take it, and when you open its mouth, you will find a stater; take it, and give it to him for me and for you.

Matthew Chapter 18

Who is the oldest?

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child, and set him among them,
3 and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye turn and become as little children, ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.
4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 And whoever welcomes a child like this in my name welcomes me.

Chances of falling

6 And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a donkey’s millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depths of the sea.
7 Woe to the world because of its stumbles! for stumbling blocks must come, but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!
8 Therefore, if your hand or your foot causes you to offend, cut it off and throw it away from you; It is better for you to enter life lame or maimed than having two hands or two feet to be cast into eternal fire.
9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it away from you; It is better for you to enter life with one eye than having two eyes to be thrown into hell fire.

Parable of the lost sheep

10 Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones; For I tell you that his angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
11 For the Son of Man has come to save what was lost.
12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go into the mountains to look for the one that had gone astray?
13 And if it happens that he finds her, truly I tell you that he rejoices more over her than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.
14 So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

How to forgive your brother

15 Therefore, if your brother sins against you, go and rebuke him while you and he are alone; If I listen to you, you have won your brother.
16 But if he does not listen to you, he still takes one or two with you, so that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be confirmed.
17 If he does not listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he does not listen to the church, consider him a Gentile and a publican.
18 Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
19 Again I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.
20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I among them.
21 Then Peter came to him and said, Lord, how many times will I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven?
22 Jesus said to him: I do not say to you up to seven, but even up to seventy times seven.

The two debtors

23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
24 And beginning to do the accounts, a man was presented to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
25 As he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife and children, and everything he had, so that the debt could be paid. .
26 Then that servant, prostrate, besought him, saying, Lord, be patient with me, and I will repay you in full.
27 The master of that servant, moved with mercy, released him and forgave him the debt.
28 But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants, who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him, he choked him, saying: Pay me what you owe me.
29 Then his fellow servant fell down at his feet and besought him, saying, Be patient with me, and I will repay you in full.
30 But he would not, but went and cast him into prison, until he should pay the debt.
31 When his fellow servants saw what was happening, they were very sad, and they went and told his master everything that had happened.
32 Then, calling him his lord, he said to him: Wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt, because you besought me.
33 Shouldn’t you also have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?
34 Then his master, angry, handed him over to the executioners, until he paid all that he owed her.
35 So also my heavenly Father will do to you if each of you does not forgive his brother with all his heart for his trespasses.

Matthew Chapter 19

Jesus teaches about divorce

1 It came to pass, when Jesus had finished these words, that he left Galilee and went to the regions of Judea beyond the Jordan.
2 And great crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
3 Then the Pharisees came to him, testing him and saying, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?
4 He answered and said to them, Have you not read that he who made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 and said, For this reason a man will leave father and mother, and will cleave to his wife, and the two will be one meat?
6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh; Therefore, what God has joined together, let no man put asunder.
7 They said to him: Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put her away?
8 He said to them: Because of the hardness of your heart, Moses allowed you to divorce your wives; but at first it was not like that.
9 And I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for the cause of fornication, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
10 His disciples said to him, If this is the condition of a man with his wife, it is not advisable to marry.
11 Then he said to them: Not everyone is able to receive this, but only those to whom it is given.
12 For there are eunuchs who were thus born from his mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who are made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it.

Jesus blesses the children

13 Then some children were presented to him, so that he could lay his hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said, Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
15 And having laid his hands on them, he departed from there.

The rich young man

16 Then one came and said to him, Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do to have eternal life?
17 He said to him: Why do you call me good? There is none good but one: God. But if you want to enter life, keep the commandments.

18 He said to him: Which ones? And Jesus said: Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. You shall not bear false witness.
19 Honor your father and your mother; and, You will love your neighbor as yourself.
20 The young man said to him: All these I have kept from my youth. What else am I missing?
21 Jesus said to him: If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me.
22 When the young man heard this word, he went away sad, because he had many possessions.
23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, Truly I say to you, it will be difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.
25 When his disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, Who then can be saved?
26 And Jesus looking at them, said to them: With men this is impossible; but with God everything is possible.
27 Then Peter answered and said unto him, Behold, we have left all, and followed thee; What then will we have?
28 And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And whoever has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.
30 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

Matthew Chapter 20

The vineyard workers

1 For the kingdom of heaven is like a man, a householder, who went out in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
2 And having agreed with the workers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
3 Going out about the third hour of the day, he saw others standing idle in the square;
4 And he said to them, Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what is right. And they went.
5 He went out again about the sixth and ninth hours, and did the same thing.
6 And going out about the eleventh hour, he found others standing idle; And he said to them: Why do you sit here idle all day?
7 They said to him: Because no one has hired us. He said to them: Go you also to the vineyard, and you will receive what is right.
8 When night came, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward: Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.
9 And when those who had gone came about the eleventh hour, each one received a denarius.
10 When the first also came, they thought that they would receive more; but they also each received a denarius.
11 And when they received it, they murmured against the head of the house,
12 saying, These last ones have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.
13 He answered and said to one of them, Friend, I do you no wrong; Did you not agree with me for a denarius?
14 Take what is yours, and go; but I want to give to this last one, as to you.
15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with what is mine? Or are you envious because I am generous?
16 Thus, the first will be last, and the last will be first; For many are called, but few are chosen.

Again Jesus announces his death

17 When Jesus went up to Jerusalem, he took his twelve disciples aside on the way, and said to them,
18 Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death;
19 and they will hand him over to the Gentiles to mock him, scourge him, and crucify him; but on the third day he will rise again.

Request of James and John

20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to him with her sons, bowing down before him and asking him for something.
21 He said to him: What do you want? She said to him: Order that these two sons of mine sit in your kingdom, one on your right, and the other on your left.
22 Then Jesus answering said, You do not know what you ask. Can you drink of the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized? And they said to him: We can.
23 He said to them: Indeed, you will drink from my cup, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; But to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to give, but to those for whom it is prepared by my Father.
24 When the ten heard this, they were angry with the two brothers.
25 Then Jesus called them and said, You know that the rulers of the nations lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them.
26 But it will not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant,
27 and whoever wants to be first among you will be your servant;
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Two blind men receive sight

29 As they left Jericho, a large crowd followed them.
30 And two blind men sitting by the way, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
31 And the people rebuked them to keep quiet; but they cried out more, saying, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!
32 And Jesus stopping, called them, and said to them, What do you want me to do to you?
33 They said to him, Lord, let our eyes be opened.
34 Then Jesus, having compassion, touched their eyes, and immediately they received their sight; and they followed him.

Matthew Chapter 21

The triumphal entry into Jerusalem

1 When they approached Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,
2 saying to them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie her, and bring them to me.
3 And if anyone says anything to you, say, The Lord needs them; and then he will send them.
4 All this happened to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying:
5 Tell the daughter of Zion: Behold, your King is coming to you, Meek, and sitting on a donkey, On a colt, the foal of an animal. burden.
6 And the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them;
7 And they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them; and he sat on it.
8 And the crowd, which was very numerous, spread their cloaks on the road; and others cut branches from the trees, and spread them on the road.
9 And the people who went before and those who followed shouted, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the high!
10 When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was moved, saying, Who is this?
11 And the people said, This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth of Galilee.

Temple purification

12 And Jesus entered the temple of God, and drove out all those who sold and bought in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers, and the chairs of those who sold doves;
13 And he said to them, It is written: My house will be called a house of prayer; But you have made it a den of thieves.
14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.
15 But the chief priests and the scribes, seeing the wonders that he did, and the boys shouting in the temple and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David! They were indignant,
16 and said to him, Do you hear what these say? And Jesus said to them: Yes; Did you never read: From the mouths of children and sucklings did you perfect praise?
17 And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany, and lodged there.

Curse of the barren fig tree

18 In the morning, returning to the city, he was hungry.
19 And seeing a fig tree near the road, he came to it, and found nothing on it, but only leaves; and he said to him: Never again may fruit be born from you. And then she withered the fig tree.
20 When the disciples saw this, they said in wonder: How is it that the fig tree withered away immediately?
21 Jesus answered and said to them, Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do this to the fig tree, but if you say to this mountain, Be taken up and cast into the sea, it will be done.
22 And whatever you ask for in prayer, believing, you will receive.

The authority of Jesus

23 When he came to the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him while he was teaching, and said to him, By what authority do you do these things? and who gave you this authority?
24 Jesus answered and said to them, I also will ask you a question, and if you answer it, I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.
25 John’s baptism, where was he from? From heaven or from men? They then argued among themselves, saying: If we say, from heaven, he will say to us: Why then did you not believe him?
26 And if we say, of men, we fear the people; because everyone has John as a prophet.
27 And answering Jesus, they said, We do not know. And he also said to them: Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Parable of the two sons

28 But what do you think? A man had two sons, and approaching the first, he said to him: Son, go work today in my vineyard.
29 And he answered and said, I will not; but later, repentant, he went.
30 And coming to the other, he said to him in the same way; And he answered and said, Yes, sir, I am going. And it wasn’t.
31 Which of the two did the will of his father? They said: The first. Jesus said to them: Truly I say to you, publicans and harlots are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God.
32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but the publicans and the harlots believed him; and you, seeing this, did not repent afterwards to believe him.

The evil farmers

33 Hear another parable: There was a man, a householder, who planted a vineyard, fenced it, dug a winepress in it, built a tower, and rented it to tenants, and went far away.
34 And when the time of the fruits approached, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of him.
35 But the tenants, taking the servants, beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
36 He again sent other servants, more than the first; and they did to them in the same way.
37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying: They will respect my son.
38 But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; Come, let us kill him, and let us take possession of his inheritance.
39 And they took him, cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
40 So when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?
41 They said to him, “He will destroy the wicked without mercy, and will rent out his vineyard to other tenants, who will pay him the fruit at his own time.”
42 Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the head of the corner. The Lord has done this, and is it wonderful in our eyes?
43 Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and will be given to a people who will produce the fruits of it.
44 And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; and on whomever it falls, he will break it into pieces.
45 And when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they understood that he was speaking about them.
46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the people, because they considered him a prophet.

Matthew Chapter 22

parable of the wedding feast

1 Jesus answered and spoke to them again in parables, saying,
2 The kingdom of heaven is like a king who gave a wedding feast to his son;
3 and he sent his servants to call those invited to the wedding; but these did not want to come.
4 He again sent other servants, saying: Tell those who are invited: Behold, I have prepared my food; my bulls and fatted animals have been killed, and everything is ready; come to the weddings.
5 But they, heedless, went away, one to his farm, and another to his business;
6 and others, taking the servants, insulted them and killed them.
7 When the king heard it, he was angry; and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burned his city.
8 Then he said to his servants, The wedding is truly ready; but those who were invited were not worthy.
9 Go therefore to the exits of the highways, and call to the wedding as many as you find.
10 And the servants went out into the roads, and gathered together all they found, both bad and good; and the weddings were filled with guests.
11 And the king went in to see the guests, and he saw there a man who was not dressed for a wedding.
12 And he said to him, Friend, how did you come in here without being dressed as a wedding dress? But he was silent.
13 Then the king said to those who served, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

The question of tribute

15 Then the Pharisees went away and consulted how to surprise him in some word.
16 And their disciples sent him to the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that you are a lover of the truth, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that you care not for anyone, because you do not regard the appearance of men. .
17 So tell us what you think: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?
18 But Jesus, knowing their malice, said to them: Why do you tempt me, you hypocrites?
19 Show me the tribute coin. And they presented him with a denarius.
20 Then he said to them, Whose image is this, and the inscription?
21 They said to him: From Caesar. And he said to them, Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.
22 When they heard this, they were amazed, and leaving him, they went away.

The question about the resurrection

23 That day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him,
24 saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man dies without children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up offspring for his brother.
25 So there were seven brothers among us; the first married, and died; and having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother.
26 In the same way also the second, and the third, even to the seventh.
27 And after all the woman also died.
28 At her resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be, since they all had her by her?

29 Then Jesus answered and said to them, You are erring, ignoring the Scriptures and the power of God.
30 For at the resurrection they will neither marry nor be given in marriage, but will be like the angels of God in heaven.
31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, when he said:
32 I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not God of the dead, but of the living.
33 When the people heard this, they were amazed at his doctrine.

The great commandment

34 Then the Pharisees, hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered together.
35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked to tempt him, saying,
36 Teacher, what is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said to him: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is similar: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
40 All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.

Whose son is Christ?

41 And when the Pharisees were together, Jesus asked them,
42 saying, What do you think of the Christ? Who’s his father? They said to him: From David.
43 He said to them: How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying:
44 The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, Until I make your enemies your footstool?
45 If David calls him Lord, what is his son like?
46 And no one could answer him a word; Nor did anyone dare to ask him more from that day on.

Matthew Chapter 23

Jesus accuses scribes and Pharisees

1 Then Jesus spoke to the people and to his disciples, saying:
2 The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.
3 Therefore, whatever they tell you to observe, observe it and do it; but do not do according to their works, for they say, and do not do.
4 Because they bind heavy burdens that are difficult to carry, and put them on men’s shoulders; but they don’t even want to move them with a finger.
5 Rather, they do all their works to be seen by men. For they widen their phylacteries, and spread the fringes of their cloaks;
6 and they love the first seats at dinners, and the first seats in the synagogues,
7 and greetings in the marketplaces, and that men call them: Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But you do not want to be called Rabbi; for one is your Master, the Christ, and you are all brothers.
9 And do not call anyone on earth your father; for one is your Father, who is in heaven.
10 Nor be called teachers; because one is your Master, the Christ.
11 He who is greatest among you, let him be your servant.
12 For he who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you close the kingdom of heaven before men; Well, you do not enter yourself, nor do you allow those who are entering to enter.
14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretext you make long prayers; For this you will receive greater condemnation.
15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you travel sea and land to make a proselyte, and once made, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you.
16 Woe to you, blind guides! that you say: If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing; But if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor.
17 Fools and blind! because which is greater, gold, or the temple that sanctifies gold?
18 You also say: If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing; But if anyone swears by the offering that is on him, he is a debtor.
19 Fools and blind! for which is greater, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering?
20 For he who swears by the altar swears by it, and by everything that is on it;
21 And he who swears by the temple swears by it, and by him who lives in it;
22 and he who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.
23Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you tithe the mint and the dill and the cumin, and you leave the most important things in the law: justice, mercy and faith. This was necessary to do, without stopping doing that.
24 Blind guides, who strain the gnat and swallow the camel!

25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you clean the outside of the glass and the plate, but inside you are full of theft and injustice.
26 Blind Pharisee! First clean what is inside the glass and the plate, so that what is outside is also clean.

27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear beautiful, but on the inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all uncleanness.
28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the righteous,
30 and say, If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 So you bear witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who killed the prophets.
32 You also fill the measure of your fathers!
33 Serpents, generation of vipers! How will you escape the hell’s damnation?
34 Therefore, behold, I send you prophets and wise men and scribes; and of them you will kill some and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues, and you will persecute from city to city;
35 so that all the righteous blood that was shed on the earth may come upon you, from the blood of Abel the righteous to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you killed between the temple and the altar.
36 Truly I say to you, all this will come upon this generation.

Jesus' Lament over Jerusalem

37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to you! How many times I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing!
38 Behold, your house is left to you deserted.
39 For I tell you that from now on you will not see me until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Matthew Chapter 24

Jesus predicts the destruction of the temple

1 When Jesus left the temple and was leaving, his disciples came to show him the temple buildings.
2 He answered and said to them: Do you see all this? Truly I tell you, not one stone will remain here upon another that will not be thrown down.

Signs before the end

3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him apart, saying, Tell us, when will these things be, and what sign will there be of your coming, and of the end of the age?
4 Jesus answered and said to them, Take heed that no one deceive you.
5 For many will come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; many will deceive.
6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; Take care that you are not troubled, because all this must happen; but it’s not the end yet.
7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be pestilences, and famines, and earthquakes in different places.
8 And all this will be the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake.
10 Many will then stumble, and will betray one another, and will hate one another.
11 And many false prophets will arise, and will deceive many;
12 and because wickedness has multiplied, the love of many will grow cold.
13 But he who endures to the end will be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world, as a testimony to all nations; And then the end will come.
15 Therefore, when you see in the holy place the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand),
16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
17 Let him who is on the roof not come down to take anything from his house;
18 And whoever is in the field, let him not turn back to take his cloak.
19 But woe to those who are pregnant, and to those who give birth in those days!
20 Pray therefore that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath;
21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will be.
22 And if those days were not shortened, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect, those days will be shortened.
23 So if anyone says to you, Look, here is the Christ, or look, there he is, do not believe it.
24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
25 I have already told you before.
26 Therefore, if they say to you, Look, he is in the wilderness, do not go out; or look, he is in the chambers, do not believe it.
27For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man also be.
28 For wherever the dead body is, there the eagles will gather.

The coming of the Son of Man

29 And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven; and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.
31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet voice, and they will gather his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
32 From the fig tree learn the parable: When its branch is tender and its leaves sprout, you know that summer is near.
33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, at the doors.
34 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all this happens.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
36 But no one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, but only my Father.
37 But as in the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For as in the days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark,
39 and did not understand until the flood came and took them all away, so it will be the coming of the Son of Man.
40 Then there will be two in the field; one will be taken, and the other will be left.
41 Two women will be grinding at a mill; the one will be taken, and the other will be left.
42 Watch therefore, for you do not know at what hour your Lord will come.
43 But know this, that if the head of the family knew what time the thief would come, he would watch, and he would not let his house be destroyed.
44 Therefore you also be prepared; for the Son of Man will come at an hour that you do not think.
45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord set over his house to give them food in season?
46 Blessed is that servant whom, when his master comes, she finds doing thus.
47 Truly I say to you, he will put his possessions over all.
48 But if that evil servant says in his heart, My lord is slow to come;
49 and begin to beat his fellow servants, and even to eat and drink with drunkards,
50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect, and at an hour that he does not know,
51and he will punish him severely, and will take his part with the hypocrites; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew Chapter 25

Parable of the ten virgins

1 Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
2 Five of them were wise and five were foolish.
3 The foolish ones, taking their lamps, took no oil with them;
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels, along with their lamps.
5 And when the bridegroom was late, they all nodded off and fell asleep.
6 And at midnight there was a cry: Here comes the bridegroom; come out to receive him!
7 Then all those virgins got up and arranged their lamps.
8 And the foolish said to the wise, Give us some of your oil; because our lamps go out.
9 But the wise answered, saying, So that we and you may not lack, go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.
10 But while they were going to buy, the husband came; and those who were ready went with him to the wedding; and the door was closed.
11 Then the other virgins also came, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us!
12 But he answered and said, Truly I say to you, I do not know you.
13 Watch therefore, for you do not know the day or the hour in which the Son of Man will come.

Parable of the talents

14 For the kingdom of heaven is like a man who, going far away, called his servants and gave them his possessions.
15 To one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to each one according to his ability; and then he went away.
16 And he who had received five talents went and traded with them, and earned another five talents.
17 Likewise, he who had received two also earned two more.
18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid the money of his lord.
19 After a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20 And he who had received five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, Lord, you gave me five talents; Here you are, I have gained another five talents on them.
21 And his master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; You have been faithful over a few, I will make you ruler over many things; enter into the joy of your lord.
22 He who had received two talents also came and said, Lord, you gave me two talents; here you go, I have gained two more talents on them.
23 His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; You have been faithful over a few, I will make you ruler over many things; enter into the joy of your lord.
24 But he who had received a talent also came and said, Lord, I knew that you were a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter;
25 Therefore I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the earth; here you have what is yours.
26 His master answered and said to him, “You wicked and negligent servant, you knew that I reap where I did not sow, and that I gather where I did not scatter.
27 Therefore, you should have given my money to the bankers, and when I came, I would have received what is mine with interest.
28 Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
29 For to him who has, it will be given, and he will have more; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
30 And cast the useless servant into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The judgment of the nations

31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on his throne of glory,
32 and all nations will be gathered before him; and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
33 And he will put the sheep on the right hand of him, and the goats on the left of him.
34 Then the King will say to those on his right hand: Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
35 For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in;
36 I was naked, and you covered me; sick, and you visited me; in prison, and you came to me.
37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
38 And when did we see you a stranger and take you in, or naked and cover you?
39 Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?
40 And the King will answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, just as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.
41 Then he will also say to those on the left: Depart from me, you cursed, into eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
42 Because I was hungry, and you gave me no food; I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink;
43 I was a stranger, and you did not take me in; I was naked, and you did not cover me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit me.
44 Then they also will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick, or in prison, and did not serve you?
45 Then he will answer them and say, Truly I say to you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me either.
46 And these will go to eternal punishment, and the righteous to eternal life.

Matthew Chapter 26

The plot to arrest Jesus

1 When Jesus had finished all these words, he said to his disciples:
2 You know that in two days the Passover will be celebrated, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.
3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people gathered together in the courtyard of the high priest named Caiaphas,
4 and took counsel to take Jesus by deception and kill him.
5 But they said, Not during the festival, lest there be a commotion in the people.

Jesus is anointed in Bethany

6 And while Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of perfume of great price, and poured it on his head as he sat at table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were angry, saying, “Why this waste?”
9 For this could have been sold at a great price, and given to the poor.
10 And Jesus understanding it, he said to them, Why do you trouble this woman? Well, she has done a good work for me.
11 For you will always have poor people with you, but you will not always have me.
12 For by pouring this perfume on my body, she did so to prepare me for the grave.
13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told as a memorial to her.

Judas offers to hand over Jesus

14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests,
15 and said to them, What do you want to give me, and I will give it to you? And they assigned him thirty pieces of silver.
16 And from then on he looked for an opportunity to betray him.

Institution of the Lord's Supper

17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
18 And he said, Go into the city to a certain man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; In your house I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples.
19 And the disciples did as Jesus commanded them, and prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, he sat at table with the twelve.
21 And while they were eating, he said, Truly I say to you, one of you is going to betray me.
22 And being greatly saddened, each of them began to say to him, Is it I, Lord?
23 Then he answered and said, Whoever puts his hand in the dish with me, he will betray me.
24 The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Good were it for that man had not been born.
25 Then Judas, who betrayed him, answered and said, Is it I, Master? He said to him: You have said it.
26 And while they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27 And taking the cup, and having given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink it, all of you;
28 For this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29 And I tell you, from now on I will drink no more of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

Jesus announces Peter's denial

30 And when they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31 Then Jesus said to them: All of you will be scandalized by me tonight; for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.
32 But after he has risen, I will go before you to Galilee.
33 Peter answered and said to him, Even if all are offended by you, I will never be offended.
34 Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.
35 Peter said to him, Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you. And all the disciples said the same.

42 He went again and prayed a second time, saying, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass from me without my drinking it, your will be done.”
43 He came again and found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy with sleep.
44 And leaving them, he went away again, and prayed a third time, saying the same words.
45 Then he came to his disciples and said to them, Sleep now and rest. Behold, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
46 Get up, let’s go; See, he who betrays me is approaching.

Arrest of Jesus

47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him many people with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
48 And he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, Whom I kiss, he is it; catch him
49 And immediately he came to Jesus and said, Hail, Master! And he kissed him.
50 And Jesus said to him, Friend, why do you come? Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him.
51 But one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword from him, and striking a servant of the high priest, he took off his ear.
52 Then Jesus said to him, Return your sword to his place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.
53 Do you think that I cannot now pray to my Father, and that he would not give me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?
55 At that hour Jesus said to the people: Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me like a thief? Every day he sat with you teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me.
56 But all this happened, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Jesus before the council

57 Those who arrested Jesus brought him to the high priest Caiaphas, where the scribes and elders were gathered.
58 But Peter followed him at a distance to the court of the high priest; and entering, he sat down with the officers to see the end.
59 And the chief priests and the elders and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, to hand him over to death,
60 and they did not find it, although many false witnesses came forward. But at last two false witnesses came,
61 who said, This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and rebuild it in three days.
62 And the high priest stood up and said to him: Do you not answer anything? What do these testify against you?
63 But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him: I adjure you by the living God to tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.
64 Jesus said to him: You have said it; And furthermore I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, He has blasphemed! What more need do we have of witnesses? Behold, even now you have heard his blasphemy.
66 What do you think? And they answered and said: He is guilty of death!
67 Then they spat in his face, and beat him, and others slapped him,
68 saying, Prophesy to us, Christ, who it is that struck you.

Peter denies Jesus

69 Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard; and he came to him a maidservant, saying, Thou also was with Jesus the Galilean.
70 But he denied it before everyone, saying, I do not know what you say.
71 As he went out to the door, he saw another, and said to those who were there: This man also was with Jesus the Nazarene.
72 But he denied again with an oath: I do not know the man.
73 A little later, those who were standing there approached and said to Peter: Truly you also are one of them, because even your way of speaking reveals you.
74 Then he began to curse and swear: I do not know the man. And immediately he crowed.
75 Then Peter remembered the words of Jesus, who had said to him: Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times. And going out, he wept bitterly.

Matthew Chapter 27

Jesus before Pilate

1 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, to hand him over to death.
2 And they led him away bound, and handed him over to Pontius Pilate, the governor.

Death of Judas

3 Then Judas, who had betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repentantly returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 saying, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood. But they said: What is it to us? There you!
5 And throwing the pieces of silver into the temple, he went out and went and hanged himself.
6 The chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury of offerings, because it is the price of blood.
7 And after consulting, they bought with them the potter’s field, for the burial of the foreigners.
8 Therefore that field is called to this day: Field of Blood.
9 Thus was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, when he said: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the prize, according to the price set by the children of Israel;
10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.

Pilate questions Jesus

11 So Jesus stood before the governor; and he asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him: You say so.
12 And when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he answered nothing.
13 Pilate then said to him, Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?
14 But Jesus did not answer him a word; in such a way that the governor was greatly astonished.

Jesus sentenced to death

15 Now on the day of the festival the governor used to release one prisoner to the people, whomever they wanted.
16 And they had then a famous prisoner named Barabbas.
17 So when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them: Whom do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called the Christ?
18 For he knew that they had betrayed him because of envy.
19 And while he was sitting at the judgment seat, his wife commanded him to say, Have nothing to do with that righteous man; because today I have suffered much in dreams because of him.
20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be killed.
21 And the governor answered and said to them, Which of the two do you want me to release to you? And they said: To Barabbas.
22 Pilate said to them, What then shall I do with Jesus, who is called the Christ? They all told him: Let him be crucified!
23 And the governor said to them, What evil has he done? But they shouted even more, saying: Let him be crucified!
24 When Pilate saw that he was making no progress, but that he was becoming more agitated, he took water and washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; there you.
25 And all the people answered and said, His blood be upon us, and upon our children.
26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and having scourged Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.
27 Then the governor’s soldiers brought Jesus to the praetorium, and gathered the whole company around him;
28 And they stripped him, and they threw a scarlet cloak over him,
29 and they put on his head a crown woven of thorns, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed their knees before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30 And spitting on him, they took his reed and struck him on the head.
31 After they had mocked him, they took off his cloak, put his clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Crucifixion and death of Jesus

32 As they were going out, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon; They forced him to carry the cross.
33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means: Place of the Skull,
34 they gave him vinegar mixed with gall to drink; but after he had tasted it, he would not drink it.
35 When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves, casting lots, that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled: They divided my clothes among themselves, and cast lots for my clothes.
36 And they sat there guarding him.
37 And they placed upon his head the cause of him written: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38 Then they crucified with him two thieves, one on the right and one on the left.
39 And those who passed by reviled him, shaking their heads,
40 and saying, You who destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself; If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 In this way also the chief priests, mocking him with the scribes and the Pharisees and the elders, said:

42 He saved others, he cannot save himself; If he is the King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
43 He trusted in God; free him now if he wants you; for he has said: I am the Son of God.
44 The thieves who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.
45 And from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
46 About the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? This is: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
47 Some of those who were there said, when they heard it, “This man calls Elijah.”
48 And immediately, one of them ran, he took a sponge, and soaked it in vinegar, and putting it on a reed, gave him to drink.
49 But the others said, Let’s see if Elijah comes to deliver him.
50 But Jesus, having cried out again with a loud voice, gave up his spirit.
51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom; and the earth trembled, and the rocks split;
52 and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of saints who had fallen asleep rose up;
53 And coming out of the tombs, after his resurrection, they came to the holy city, and appeared to many.
54 The centurion and those who were with him guarding Jesus, seeing the earthquake and the things that had been done, were greatly afraid and said, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him,
56 among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus is buried

57 When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea came, named Joseph, who had also been a disciple of Jesus.
58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered that the body be given to him.
59 And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and laid it in his new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and after rolling a large stone at the entrance to the tomb, he left.
61 And Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting before the tomb.

The guard before the grave

62 On the next day, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate,
63 saying: Lord, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was still alive: After three days I will rise again.
64 Therefore command that the tomb be secured until the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal it, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead. And it will be worse than the first last error.
65 And Pilate said to them, There you have a guard; Go, secure it as you know.
66 So they went and secured the tomb, sealing the stone and setting the guard.

Matthew Chapter 28

The resurrection

1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.
2 And there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, coming down from heaven and coming, rolled away the stone, and sat on it.
3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was white as snow.
4 And the guards trembled for fear of him and became like dead men.
5 But the angel answered and said to the women, Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus, who was crucified.
6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was placed.
7 And go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Behold, I have told you.
8 Then they, leaving the tomb with fear and great joy, ran to tell the news to their disciples. And as they went to tell the disciples,
9 behold, Jesus met them, saying, Hail! And they came near and embraced his feet and worshiped him.
10 Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid; Go, tell my brothers the news, so that they may go to Galilee, and there they will see me.

The guard report

11 While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city, and told the chief priests of all things that had happened.
12 And when they were gathered together with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave much money to the soldiers,
13 saying, Say ye, his disciples came by night, and stole him, while we were asleep.
14 And if the governor hears this, we will persuade him and bring you to safety.
15 And they, taking the money, did as they had been instructed. This saying has spread among the Jews to this day.

The grand commision

16 But the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had commanded them.
17 And when they saw him, they worshiped him; but some were doubtful.
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit;
20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the world. Amen.
