1 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel.
2 To understand wisdom and doctrine, To know prudent reasons,
3 To receive the counsel of prudence, Justice, judgment and equity;
4 To give sagacity to the simple, And to the young intelligence and sanity.
5 The wise will hear, and increase knowledge, And the understanding will acquire counsel,
6 To understand proverb and declaration, Words of wise men, and their profound sayings.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; Fools despise wisdom and teaching.
8 Hear, my son, the instruction of your father, And do not despise the guidance of your mother;
9 For they will be a gracious adornment on your head, and necklaces on your neck.
10 My son, if sinners want to deceive you, do not consent.
11 If they say, Come with us; Let us lay snares to shed blood, Let us lie in wait for the innocent;
12 We will swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who fall into an abyss;
13 We will find riches of every kind, We will fill our houses with spoils;
14 Cast your lot among us; Let’s all have a bag, right?
15 My son, do not walk with them. Remove your foot from their paths,
16 For their feet run towards evil, And they are quick to shed blood.
17 For the net will be spread in vain before the eyes of every bird;
18 But they lay snares for their own blood, And they lay a snare for their souls.
19 Such are the paths of everyone who is given to covetousness, Which takes the lives of its possessors.
20 Wisdom cries in the streets, She lifts up her voice in the streets;
21 Cry out in the main meeting places; At the entrances to the city gates he says his reasons.
22 How long, O simple ones, will you love simplicity, And scoffers will desire to mock, And fools will hate knowledge?
23 Return to my rebuke; Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you, and I will make my words known to you.
24 Because I called, and you would not hear, I stretched out my hand, and there was no one to answer,
25 But you rejected all my advice, and my rebuke you did not want,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity, And I will mock when what you fear comes to you;
27 When what you fear comes like destruction, And your calamity comes like a whirlwind; When you come upon you distress and anguish.
28 Then they will call me, and I will not answer; They will look for me in the morning, and they will not find me.
29 Because they hated wisdom, And did not choose the fear of the Lord,
30 Nor did they desire my advice, And despised all my rebuke,
31 They will eat the fruit of their way, And will be satisfied with their own counsels.
32 For the wandering of the ignorant will kill them, And the prosperity of fools will ruin them;
33 But whoever hears me will live safely and live in peace, without fear of evil.
1 My son, if you will receive my words, and keep my commandments within you,
2 Let your ear be attentive to wisdom; If you incline your heart to prudence,
3 If you cry out to understanding, And give your voice to prudence;
4 If you search for it like silver, and search for it like treasures,
5 Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and you will find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
7 He provides sound wisdom to the upright; It is a shield to those who walk uprightly.
8 He is the one who keeps the paths of judgment, And preserves the path of his saints.
9 Then you will understand justice, justice, and equity, and every good way.
10 When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge pleases your soul,
11 Discretion will keep you; He will preserve your understanding,
12 To deliver you from the evil path, From men who speak perverse things,
13 Who leave straight paths, To walk in dark paths;
14 Who rejoice in doing evil, Who delight in the perversities of vice;
15 Whose paths are crooked, And their ways are crooked.
16 You will be delivered from the strange woman, From the strange woman who flatters with her words,
17 Who abandons the companion of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God.
18 Therefore her house is inclined to death, and her paths to the dead;
19 All who come to it will not return, Nor will they follow the paths of life again.
20 Thus you will walk in the path of the good, And you will follow the paths of the righteous;
21 For the upright will inhabit the land, And the perfect will remain in it,
22 But the wicked will be cut off from the land, And the transgressors will be uprooted from it.
1 My son, do not forget my law, And let your heart keep my commandments;
2 For length of days and years of life And peace will increase you.
3 Let mercy and truth never depart from you; Bind them to your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart;
4 And you will find favor and good opinion in the eyes of God and men.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own opinion; Fear the Lord, and depart from evil;
8 For it will be medicine for your body, and refreshment for your bones.
9 Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your fruits;
10 And your barns will be filled with abundance, And your winepresses will overflow with new wine.
11 Do not despise, my son, the punishment of the Lord, Nor be weary of his correction;
12 For the Lord punishes whom he loves, as a father punishes the son whom he loves.
13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, And who obtains understanding;
14 For the gain from it is better than the gain from silver, and the fruits of it are better than fine gold.
15 It is more precious than precious stones; And everything you could want, can’t compare to her.
16 Length of days is in his right hand; To his left, riches and honor.
17 His ways are pleasant ways, and all his paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and blessed are those who hold on to her.
19 The Lord founded the earth with wisdom; He established the heavens with intelligence.
20 By his knowledge the depths were divided, and the heavens dropped dew.
21 My son, do not let these things depart from your eyes; Keep the law and the counsel,
22 And they will be life to your soul, and grace to your neck.
23 Then you will walk your way confidently, And your foot will not stumble.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid, But you will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant.
25 You will not be afraid of sudden fear, Nor of the ruin of the wicked when it comes,
26 For the Lord will be your confidence, and he will preserve your foot from being taken.
27 Do not refuse to do good to whom it is due, When you have the power to do it.
28 Do not say to your neighbor: Go, and he will return, And tomorrow I will give it to you, When you have something with you to give him.
29 Do not intend evil against your neighbor Who lives safely near you.
30 Do not quarrel with anyone without reason, Unless they have wronged you.
31 Do not envy an unjust man, Nor choose any of his ways.
32 For the Lord abhors the wicked; But his intimate communion is with the righteous.
33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked, But he will bless the dwelling of the righteous.
34 Surely he will mock the mockers, And to the humble he will give grace.
35 The wise will inherit honor, But the fools will bear ignominy.
1 Hear, children, the teaching of a father, And pay attention, so that you may know sanity.
2 For I give you good teaching; Do not forsake my law.
3 Because I was also my father’s son, Delicate and unique before my mother.
4 And he taught me, and he said to me: Let your heart hold my reasons, Keep my commandments, and you will live.
5 Acquire wisdom, acquire intelligence; Do not forget or depart from the reasons of my mouth;
6 Do not leave her, and she will keep you; She loves her, and she will keep you.
7 Wisdom above all; acquire wisdom; And over all your possessions acquire intelligence.
8 Magnify her, and she will magnify you; She will honor you, when you have hugged her.
9 She will give an ornament of grace to your head; He will give you a crown of beauty.
10 Hear, my son, and receive my reasons, And the years of your life will be multiplied.
11 In the path of wisdom I have guided you, And in straight paths I have made you walk.
12 When you walk, your steps will not be narrowed, And if you run, you will not stumble.
13 Hold fast the counsel, do not leave it; Save it, because that’s your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, Nor go in the path of the wicked.
15 Leave it, do not pass by it; Get away from her, come in.
16 Because they do not sleep unless they have done evil, and they lose sleep unless they have caused someone to fall.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink wine of theft;
18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of the dawn, increasing until the day is perfect.
19 The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what they stumble.
20 My son, he is attentive to my words; He inclines your ear to my reasons.
21 Do not depart from your eyes; Keep them in the middle of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them, and medicine to their whole body.
23 Above all things guarded, guard your heart; Because life flows from it.
24 He removes from you the perversity of the mouth, And removes from you the iniquity of the lips.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, And let your eyelids direct toward what is before you.
26 Examine the path of your feet, And all your ways be straight.
27 Do not turn to the right or to the left; Remove your foot from evil.
1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, And incline your ear to my understanding,
2 So that you may keep counsel, And your lips may preserve knowledge.
3 For the lips of a strange woman drip with honey, and her palate is softer than oil;
4 But the end of it is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet descend to death; His steps lead to Sheol.
6 His ways are unstable; You will not know them, If you do not consider the way of life.
7 Now therefore, children, hear me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
8 Keep your path far from her, and do not approach the door of her house;
9 Lest you give your honor to strangers, And your years to the cruel;
10 Lest strangers be satisfied with your strength, And your labors are in a stranger’s house;
11 And you groan at the end, When your flesh and your body are consumed,
12 And you say: How I hated counsel, And my heart despised rebuke;
13 I did not hear the voice of those who taught me, And I did not incline my ear to those who taught me!
14 I have been in almost every evil, In the midst of society and the congregation.
15 Drink the water from your own cistern, and the streams from your own well.
16 Will your fountains flow in the streets, and your streams of water in the squares?
17 Let them be for you alone, and not for strangers with you.
18 May your spring be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth,
19 Like a beloved deer and a graceful gazelle. May her caresses satisfy you at all times, And in her love always recreate yourself.
20 And why, my son, will you walk blindly with a stranger’s wife, And embrace the bosom of a stranger?
21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he considers all his paths.
22 His own iniquities will catch the wicked, And he will be held fast with the cords of his sin.
23 He will die for want of correction, And he will err because of the immensity of his folly.
1 My son, if you are a surety for your friend, If you have pledged your word to a stranger,
2 You have become bound by the words of your mouth, And you have been trapped in the sayings of your lips.
3 Do this now, my son, and be delivered, Since you have fallen into the hand of your neighbor; Go, humble yourself, and be sure of your friend.
4 Do not give sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids;
5 Escape like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and like a bird from the hand of him who makes snares.
6 Go to the ant, O lazy one, Look at his ways, and be wise;
7 Which having no captain, nor governor, nor lord,
8 Prepares its food in the summer, And gathers its food in the time of harvest.
9 Sloth, how long must you sleep? When will you wake up?
10 A little sleep, a little dozing, And cross your hands for a little rest;
11 Thus will come your need as a traveler, And your poverty as an armed man.
12 The evil man, the depraved man, he is the one who walks in perversity of mouth;
13 That he winks his eyes, that he speaks with his feet, that he signs with his fingers.
14 Perversities are in his heart; He is thinking evil at all times; He sows discord.
15 Therefore his calamity will come suddenly; He will suddenly be broken, and there will be no remedy.
16 Six things the Lord hates, And seven things abhor his soul:
17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked thoughts, Feet that are quick to run to evil,
19 A false witness that He speaks lies, and he who sows discord between brothers. Warning against adultery
20 Keep, my son, the commandment of your father, And do not forsake the teaching of your mother;
21 Always bind them in your heart, Bind them to your neck.
22 They will guide you when you walk; when you sleep they will keep you; They will talk to you when you wake up.
23 For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light, And reproofs that instruct you are the way of life,
24 That they may keep you from the evil woman, From the softness of the tongue of the strange woman.
25 Do not covet her beauty in your heart, Nor do she captivate you with her eyes;
26 For because of the harlot woman a man is reduced to a morsel of bread; And the woman hunts the man’s beautiful soul.
27 Can a man take fire into his bosom without his clothes burning?
28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet burning?
29 This is how he goes to his neighbor’s wife; No one who touches her will go unpunished.
30 They do not despise a thief if he steals To satisfy his appetite when he is hungry;
31 But if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold; He will hand over all the assets of his house.
32 But he who commits adultery lacks understanding; He corrupts the soul of him who does such.
33 He will find wounds and shame, And his shame will never be erased.
34 For jealousy is the anger of a man, And he will not forgive on the day of vengeance.
35 He will not accept any ransom, Nor will he forgive, even if you multiply the gifts.
1 My son, keep my reasons, and treasure up my commandments with you.
2 Keep my commandments and you will live, and my law as the apple of your eye.
3 Tie them to your fingers; Write them on the chart of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom: You are my sister, And call intelligence a relative;
5 So that they may protect you from another’s wife, And from the strange woman who softens her words.
6 For as I looked out of the window of my house, Through my lattice,
7 I saw among the simple, I considered among the young, A young man lacking understanding,
8 Who was passing by in the street, at the corner, And was on his way to her house,
9 In the evening of the day, when it was already dark, In the darkness and gloom of the night.
10 And behold, a woman comes out to meet him, dressed like a harlot and crafty in heart.
11 Brawling and quarrelsome, her feet cannot be at home;
12 Sometimes she is in the street, other times in the squares, Lurking around every corner.
13 She took hold of him and kissed him. With a cheeky countenance she told him:
14 Peace sacrifices she had promised, Today I have paid my vows;
15 Therefore I have gone out to meet you, searching diligently for your face, and I have found you.
16 I have adorned my bed with quilts embroidered with Egyptian cord;
17 I have perfumed my chamber With myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us get drunk with love until the morning; Let us rejoice in love.
19 Because the husband is not at home; He has gone on a long journey.
20 The bag of money she carried in her hand; On the appointed day she will return to her house.
21 She yielded him with the softness of her many words, She forced him with the flattery of her lips.
22 Immediately he went after her, As an ox goes to the slaughterhouse, And as a fool goes to prison to be punished;
23 Like a bird that rushes to the net, And does not know that it is against its life, Until the arrow pierces its heart.
24 Now therefore, children, hear me, and pay attention to the words of my mouth.
25 Let not your heart turn away from his ways; Do not err on their paths.
26 For she has caused many of her to fall wounded, And even the strongest have been killed by her.
27 The road to Sheol is her house, Which leads to the chambers of death.
1 Does not wisdom cry out, and understanding give its voice?
2 On the heights by the way, At the crossroads of the paths he stands;
3 In the place of the gates, at the entrance of the city, At the entrance of the gates he cries:
4 O men, I cry to you; My voice is to the children of the man.
5 Understand, O simple ones, discretion; And you fools, come to your senses.
6 Hear, for I will speak excellent things, And I will open my lips to right things.
7 For my mouth will speak truth, And ungodliness abhors my lips.
8 All the words of my mouth are right; There is nothing perverse or crooked in them.
9 All of them are right to him who understands, And reasonable to those who have found wisdom.
10 Receive my teaching, and not money; And science before the choosen gold.
11 For wisdom is better than precious stones; And everything you can wish for cannot be compared with her.
12 I, wisdom, dwell with reason, And find the knowledge of counsels.
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance, the evil way, And the perverse mouth, I hate.
14 With me is counsel and good judgment; I am the intelligence; mine is the power.
15 By me kings reign, And princes determine justice.
16 Through me princes rule, and all rulers judge the earth.
17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me early find me.
18 Riches and honor are with me; Lasting riches, and justice.
19 My fruit is better than gold, or refined gold; And my income is better than the chosen money.
20 In the path of righteousness I will lead, In the midst of paths of judgment,
21 That those who love me may have their inheritance, and that I may fill their treasures.
22 The Lord possessed me in the beginning, of old, before his works.
23 I had the government forever, from the beginning, Before the earth.
24 Before the depths I was begotten; When there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were formed, Before the hills, I was already begotten;
26 He had not yet made the earth, nor the fields, nor the beginning of the dust of the world.
27 When I formed the heavens, there I was; When he drew the circle on the face of the abyss;
28 When he established the heavens above, When he established the fountains of the deep;
29 When he gave the sea his commandment, so that the waters would not pass his commandment; When he laid the foundations of the earth,
30 I was with him in ordering everything, and it was his delight from day to day, having solace before him at all times.
31 I rejoice in the habitable part of his land; And my delights are with the sons of men.
32 Now therefore, children, hear me, and blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Heed advice, and be wise, And do not despise it.
34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching at my doors every day, Waiting at my doorposts.
35 For he who finds me will find life, and he will obtain favor from the Lord.
36 But he who sins against me defrauds his soul; All who hate me love death.
1 Wisdom built her house, He carved out its seven pillars.
2 He killed his victims, mixed his wine, and set his table.
3 He sent her maids; Upon the highest point of the city she cried.
4 He says to any simpleton: Come hither. To those lacking in sense he says:
5 Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine that I have mixed.
6 Leave simplicity, and live, And walk in the path of intelligence.
7 He who corrects a scorner brings disgrace upon himself; He who rebukes the wicked attracts stain for himself.
8 Do not rebuke a scorner, lest he hate you; He corrects the wise, and he will love you.
9 He gives to the wise, and he will be wiser; He teaches the righteous, and his knowledge will increase.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For through me your days will be increased, And years of life will be added to you.
12 If you are wise, you will be wise; And if you are a scorner, you will pay alone.
13 A foolish woman is a troublemaker; She is simple and ignorant.
14 She sits on a chair at the door of her house, In the high places of the city,
15 To call those who pass by the way, Who walk on the right paths to her.
16 She says to any simpleton: Come here. To those lacking in reason he said:
17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is delicious.
18 And they do not know that the dead are there; That his guests are in the depths of Sheol.
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes his father happy, But a foolish son brings sadness to his mother.
2 The treasures of wickedness will not be profitable; But justice delivers from death.
3 The Lord will not let the righteous go hungry; But iniquity will drive out the wicked.
4 A negligent hand impoverishes; But the hand of the diligent enriches.
5 He who gathers in the summer is a man of understanding; He who sleeps in the time of harvest is a son of shame.
6 There are blessings on the head of the righteous; But violence will cover the mouths of the wicked.
7 The memory of the righteous will be blessed; But the name of the wicked will rot.
8 The wise in heart will receive the commandments; But a prating fool shall fall.
9 He who walks in integrity walks confidently; But he who perverts his ways will be broken.
10 He who winks his eye brings sadness; And the foolish of lips will be punished.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a spring of life; But violence will cover the mouths of the wicked.
12 Hatred awakens strife; But love will cover all the fouls.
13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the prudent; But the rod is for the backs of the unwise.
14 The wise keep wisdom; But the mouth of the fool is near destruction.
15 The riches of the rich are his fortified city; And the fainting of the poor is his poverty.
16 The work of the righteous leads to life; But the fruit of the wicked is for sin.
17 The way to life is to keep instruction; But who rejects reproof goes astray.
18 He who conceals hatred has lying lips; And whoever spreads slander is a fool.
19 In the many words there is no lack of sin; But he who restrains his lips is wise.
20 Choice silver is the tongue of the righteous; But the heart of the wicked is as nothing.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding.
22 The blessing of the Lord is what enriches, And he does not add sadness with it.
23 Doing evil is like entertainment for a fool; But wisdom recreates the man of understanding.
24 What the wicked fears, that will come to him; But the righteous will be given what they desire.
25 As the whirlwind passes, so the evil one does not remain; But the righteous remain forever.
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.
27 The fear of the Lord will increase the days; But the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
28 The hope of the righteous is joy; But the expectation of the wicked will perish.
29 The way of the Lord is strength to the perfect; But it is destruction to those who do evil.
30 The righteous will never be removed; But the impious shall not dwell the land.
31 The mouth of the righteous will produce wisdom; But his perverse tongue will be cut off.
32 The lips of the righteous know how to speak what pleases; But the mouth of the wicked speaks evil things.
1 False weight is an abomination to Jehovah; But the full weight pleases him.
2 When pride comes, dishonor also comes; But with the humble there is wisdom.
3 The integrity of the upright will guide them; But he will destroy the wickedness of them.
4 They will not profit from riches in the day of wrath; But justice will deliver from death.
5 The righteousness of the perfect will direct his path; But the wicked will fall because of his wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright will deliver them; But sinners will be caught in their sin.
7 When a wicked man dies, his hope perishes; And the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
8 The righteous are delivered from tribulation; But the wicked enters in his place.
9 A hypocrite harms his neighbor with his mouth; But the righteous are delivered with wisdom.
10 In the good of the righteous the city rejoices; But when the wicked perish there is a celebration.
11 By the blessing of the upright the city will be magnified; But through the mouth of the wicked it will be turned upside down.
12 He who lacks understanding despises his neighbor; But the prudent man is silent.
13 He who gossips discovers the secret; But he that is of a faithful spirit keepeth all things.
14 Where there is no wise guidance, the people will fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.
15 He who goes as surety for a stranger will be afflicted with anxiety; But he who hates sureties will live in safety.
16 The graceful woman will have honor, And the strong will have riches.
17 A merciful man does good to his soul; But the cruel torments himself.
18 The wicked does false work; But he that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.
19 As righteousness leads to life, so he who pursues evil does so to his death.
20 The perverse in heart are an abomination to the Lord; But the perfect ones on the way are pleasing to him.
21 Sooner or later, the wicked will be punished; And the descendents of the righteous will be realeased.
22 Like a golden earring in the snout of a pig, she is the woman who is beautiful and devoid of reason.
23 The desire of the righteous is only good; But the hope of the wicked is anger.
24 There are those who distribute, and more is added to them; And there are those who retain more than what is fair, but they come to poverty.
25 The generous soul will prosper; And whoever is satisfied, he will also be satisfied.
26 He who hoards grain, the people will curse; But a blessing will be on the head of the one who sells it.
27 He who seeks good will seek favor; But to him who seeks evil, it will come to him.
28 He who trusts in his riches will fall; But the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
29 He who disturbs his house will inherit the wind; And the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; And he who wins souls is wise.
31 Surely the righteous will be rewarded on earth; How much more the wicked and the sinner!
1 He who loves instruction loves wisdom; But he who hates rebuke is ignorant.
2 The good will obtain favor from Jehovah; But he will condemn the man of evil thoughts.
3 Man will not establish himself through ungodliness; But the root of the righteous will not be removed.
4 A virtuous woman is her husband’s crown; But the bad one, like woodworm in her bones.
5 The thoughts of the righteous are righteous; But the counsels of the wicked are deception.
6 The words of the wicked are plots to shed blood; But the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
7 God will overthrow the wicked, and they will be no more; But the house of the righteous will stand firm.
8 According to his wisdom a man is praised; But the wicked in heart shall be despised.
9 Better is the despised one who has servants than the one who boasts and lacks bread.
10 The righteous take care of the life of his beast; But the heart of the impious is cruel.
11 He who tills the land of it will be satisfied with bread; But he who follows wanderers lacks understanding.
12 The wicked covet the network of the wicked; But the root of the righteous will bear fruit.
13 The wicked is entangled in the transgression of his lips; But the righteous shall come out of the tribulation.
14 Man will be satisfied with good from the fruit of his mouth; And he will be rewarded according to the work of his hands.
15 The way of a fool is right in his opinion; But he who obeys advice is wise.
16 A fool immediately makes his anger known; But he who ignores injury is prudent.
17 He who speaks truth declares justice; But a lying witness deceives.
18 There are men whose words are like blows of a sword; The words of wise people are medicine.
19 A true lip will remain forever; Lying tongue just for a while.
20 There is deceit in the hearts of those who think evil; But joy in those who think good.
21 No adversity will befall the righteous; But the wicked will be filled with evil.
22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord; But those who do truth are his contentment.
23 A sane man conceals his knowledge; But the hearts of fools publish foolishness.
24 The hand of the diligent will rule; But negligence will be taxable.
25 The anguish in a man’s heart depresses him; But a good word makes him happy.
26 The righteous man serves as a guide to his neighbor; But the way of the wicked causes them to err.
27 The lazy man will not even roast what he has hunted; But man’s precious asset is diligence.
28 In the path of justice is life; And in his ways there is no death.
1 The wise son receives the father’s advice; But the scoffer does not listen to rebukes.
2 Of the fruit of his mouth man shall eat good; But the soul of the transgressors will find evil.
3 He who guards his mouth guards his soul; But he who opens his lips too much will have calamity.
4 The soul of the lazy desires, and achieves nothing; But the soul of the diligent will be prosperous.

17 When your enemy falls, do not rejoice, And when he stumbles, do not rejoice in your heart;
18 Lest the LORD look upon him and displease him, and turn his anger away from him.
19 Do not meddle with evildoers, Nor be envious of the wicked;
20 For there will be no good end for the wicked, And the lamp of the wicked will be extinguished.
21 Fear the Lord, my son, and the king; Don’t meddle with the fickle;
22 For his destruction will come suddenly; And the brokenness of both, who understands it?
23 These are also sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.
24 Whoever says to the wicked, ‘You are righteous’, will be cursed by the people, and will be detested by the nations;
25 But those who rebuke him will have happiness, And great blessing will come upon them.
26 Kissed will be the lips of him who answers right words.
27 Prepare your work outside, and arrange it in your fields, and then you will build your house.
28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause, and do not flatter with your lips.
29 Do not say, As he did to me, so I will do to him; I will repay the man according to his work.
30 I passed by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man lacking understanding;
31 And behold, thorns had grown all over it, nettles had already covered its face, and its stone fence was already destroyed.
32 I looked, and I put it in my heart; I saw it, and took advice.
33 A little sleep, nodding a little, Putting hand on hand a little to sleep;
34 Thus your need will come like a traveler, And your poverty like an armed man.
1 These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, copied:
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; But it is the honor of the king to scrutinize him.
3 To the height of the heavens, and to the depth of the earth, And to the hearts of kings, there is no investigation.
4 He removes the dross from the silver, And jewels will come out to the melter.
5 He removes the wicked from the presence of the king, And his throne will be established in righteousness.
6 Do not boast before the king, Nor be in the place of the great;
7 For it is better that it be said to you, Come up here, than that you should be humiliated before the prince whom your eyes have looked upon.
8 Do not enter into a dispute hastily, Lest you do not know what to do in the end, After your neighbor has shamed you.
9 Discuss your cause with your companion, And do not reveal the secret to another,
10 Lest he who hears it dishonor you, And your infamy cannot be repaired.
11 Apple of gold with figures of silver It is the word spoken as it should.
12 Like a golden earring and a jewel of fine gold, He is the one who rebukes the wise man who has a docile ear.
13 Like snow cold in harvest time, So is the faithful messenger to those who send him, For he gives refreshment to the soul of his master.
14 Like clouds and winds without rain, So is the man who boasts of false liberality.
15 With long patience a prince is appeased, And his soft tongue breaks his bones.
16 Did you find honey? Eat what is enough for you, lest you, tired of it, vomit it up.
17 Stay your foot from your neighbor’s house, lest he, bored with you, hate you.
18 Hammer and knife and sharp arrow It is the man who speaks against his neighbor false testimony of him.
19 Trust in a transgressor in time of trouble is like a broken tooth and a foot out of joint.
20 He who sings songs to the afflicted heart is like he who removes clothes in cold weather, or he who pours vinegar on soap.
21 If he who hates you is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 For you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will repay you.
23 The north wind drives away the rain, And his angry face the slanderous tongue.
24 It is better to be in a corner of the roof, than with a quarrelsome woman in a spacious house.
25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, So is the good news from distant lands.
26 Like a troubled fountain and a corrupted spring, the righteous man falls before the wicked.
27 Eating a lot of honey is not good, Nor is seeking one’s own glory glory.
28 Like a city torn down and without a wall Is the man whose spirit has no rein.
1 As snow is not suitable in the summer, nor rain in the harvest, so honor is not suitable for a fool.
2 Like the sparrow in its wandering, and like the swallow in its flight, So the curse will never come without a cause.
3 The whip for the horse, the halter for the donkey, And the rod for the back of the fool.
4 Never answer a fool according to his foolishness, Lest you also be like him.
5 Respond to a fool as he deserves his foolishness, so that he does not consider himself wise in his own opinion.
6 As he who cuts off his feet and drinks the damage from it, So is he who sends a message by the hand of a fool.
7 The legs of his lame man hang uselessly; Such is the proverb in the mouth of a fool.
8 As one binds a stone in a sling, so does he who gives honor to a fool.
9 Thorns stuck in the hand of the drunken man, Such is the proverb in the mouths of fools.
10 Like an archer who strikes everyone, he is the one who takes fools and vagabonds into hire.
11 Like a dog that returns to his vomit, So is the fool that repeats his folly.
12 Have you seen a man wise in his own opinion? There is more hope for a fool than of him.
13 The sluggard says: The lion is in the way; The lion is on the streets.
14 As the door turns on its hinges, so the sluggard turns on his bed.
15 The lazy man puts his hand into the plate; He gets tired of taking her into his mouth.
16 In his own opinion the lazy man is wiser than seven who know how to advise.
17 He who lets himself be carried away by anger in another’s dispute is like he who takes a dog by the ears.
18 Like one who goes mad, and sends forth flames and arrows and death,
19 Such is the man who deceives his friend, and says, Surely I did it as a joke.
20 Without wood the fire goes out, And where there is no gossip, strife ceases.
21 Charcoal for coals, and wood for the fire; And the quarrelsome man to kindle strife.
22 The words of a gossip are like soft morsels, And they penetrate to the bowels.
23 Like silver dross thrown on the potsherd Are flattering lips and an evil heart.
24 He who hates hides with his lips; But inside him there is a machine of deception.
25 When he speaks friendly, do not believe him; For there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Even if his hatred is covered with dissimulation, his wickedness will be revealed in the congregation.
27 He who digs a pit will fall into it; And whoever turns over the stone, it will return to him.
28 A false tongue torments him who has hurt, And his flattering mouth causes him to slip.

4 Anger is cruel, and fury is impetuous; But who can stand before envy?
5 Open rebuke is better than hidden love.
6 Faithful are the wounds of him who loves; But the kisses of those who hate are importunate.
7 The full man despises the honeycomb; But to the hungry all the bitter is sweet.
8 Like a bird that leaves its nest, such is the man that leaves its place.
9 Ointment and perfume gladden the heart, And the cordial advice of a friend gladdens a man.
10 Do not leave your friend, nor your father’s friend; Nor go to your brother’s house in the day of your affliction. Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far off.
11 Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart, and I will have to answer him who wrongs me.
12 The warned one sees evil and hides; But the simple pass and bear the damage.
13 Take away his clothes from him who was surety for the stranger; And whoever trusts a stranger, take him as a pledge.
14 He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, will be counted a curse.
15 Continuous leak in time of rain And the quarrelsome woman are alike;
16 Trying to restrain it is like restraining the wind, Or holding oil in the right hand.
17 Iron sharpens iron; And so the man sharpens the face of his friend.
18 He who tends the fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who looks after the interests of his lord will have honor.
19 As in water the face corresponds to his face, so the heart of man to that of man.
20 Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied; Thus the eyes of man are never satisfied.
21 The crucible tests the silver, and the furnace tests the gold, And man the mouth of him that praises him.
22 Even if you pound a fool in a mortar between grains of wheat pounded with a pestle, his foolishness will not depart from him.
23 Be diligent to know the condition of your sheep, And look carefully over your flocks;
24 Because riches do not last forever; And doth the crown endure to every generation?
25 The grass will emerge, the grass will appear, And the herbs of the mountains will be harvested.
26 The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats for the price of the field;
27 And plenty of milk from the goats for your maintenance, for the maintenance of your house, and for the sustenance of your maids.
1 The wicked flees without anyone pursuing him; But the righteous are bold as a lion.
2 Because of the rebellion of the land his princes are many; But through the understanding and wise man he remains stable.

4 Those who forsake the law praise the wicked; But those who keep it will contend with them.
5 Evil men do not understand judgment; But those who seek the Lord understand all things.
6 Better is the poor man who walks in his integrity than he who is wicked in his ways and rich.
7 He who keeps the law is a prudent son; But he who is a companion of gluttons shames his father.
8 He who increases his wealth with usury and increased interest, For him who has compassion on the poor he increases it.

18 He who walks uprightly will be saved; But he who has perverse ways will fall into some.
19 He who tills the land of it will be satisfied with bread; But he who follows the idle will be filled with poverty.
20 The true man will have many blessings; But he who hastens to become rich will not be blameless.
21 Being a respecter of persons is not good; For even a morsel of bread shall the man trespass.
22 The miser hastens to be rich, and does not know that poverty will come upon him.
23 He who rebukes a man will later find greater favor than he who flatters with his tongue.
24 He who steals from his father or his mother, and says it is not evil, is a companion of the destroying man.
25 The haughty in spirit stirs up strife; But he who trusts in Jehovah will prosper.
26 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool; But he who walks in wisdom shall be delivered.
27 He who gives to the poor will not have poverty; But he who turns his eyes away from him will have many curses.

10 Bloody men hate the perfect, But the upright seek his contentment.
11 The fool gives vent to all his anger, But the wise man calms it at last.
12 If a ruler listens to a lying word, all his servants will be wicked.
13 The poor and the usurer meet; Jehovah lights their eyes.
14 Of the king who judges the poor with truth, The throne will be established forever.
15 The rod and correction give wisdom; But a spoiled boy will put his mother to shame.
16 When the wicked are many, the transgression is great; But the righteous will see their ruin.
17 Correct your son, and he will give you rest, And he will give joy to your soul.
18 Without prophecy the people run riot; But he who keeps the law is blessed.
19 A servant is not corrected with words; Because he understands, but he doesn’t pay attention.
20 Have you seen a light man in his words? There is more hope for a fool than of him.
21 The servant pampered from childhood by his master will ultimately be his heir.
22 An angry man raises strife, And a furious man often sins.

26 Many seek the favor of the prince; But from Jehovah comes the judgment of each one.
27 A wicked man is an abomination to the righteous; And the wicked is an abomination of righteous ways.
1 Words of Agur, son of Jaque; the prophecy that the man spoke to Itiel, Itiel and Ucal.
2 Surely I am ruder than any man, Nor have I the understanding of a man.
3 I neither learned wisdom, Nor do I know the knowledge of the Holy One.
4 Who ascended to heaven and came down? Who enclosed the winds in his fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son, if you know?
5 Every word of God is clean; He is a shield to those who hope in him.
6 Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
7 I have demanded two things from you; Do not deny them to me before he dies:
8 Vanity and lying words depart from me; Don’t give me poverty or riches; Keep me from the necessary bread;
9 Lest I be satisfied, and deny you, and say, Who is Jehovah? Or that, being poor, I steal, and blaspheme the name of my God.
10 Do not accuse the servant before his master, lest she curse you, and you will bear the punishment.
11 There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother.
12 There is a clean generation in his own opinion, although it has not been cleansed from his filth.
13 There is a generation whose eyes are haughty And whose eyelids are lifted high.
14 There is a generation whose teeth are swords, and whose teeth are knives, To devour the poor of the land, and the needy from among men.
15 The leech has two daughters who say: Give me! give to me! There are three things that are never satisfied; Even the fourth never says: Enough!
16 Sheol, the barren womb, The earth that is not satisfied with water, And the fire that never says: Enough!
17 The eye that mocks his father And despises his mother’s teaching, Let the ravens of the glen take him away, And the sons of the eagle devour him.
18 Three things are hidden from me; I still don’t know the fourth:
19 The trail of the eagle in the air; The trail of the snake on the rock; The trace of the ship in the middle of the sea; And the way of a man with a maid.
20 The way of an adulterous woman is like this: she eats, and she wipes her mouth and says, I have done no wrong.
21 For three things the earth is troubled, And the fourth she cannot bear:
22 For the servant when she reigns; For the fool when she is satisfied with bread;
23 For the hated woman when she marries; And for the servant when he inherits her mistress.
24 Four things are among the smallest on earth, And the same are wiser than the wise:
25 The ants, a people not strong, And in the summer they prepare their food;
26 The rabbits, a people without effort, And they put their house in the stone;
27 The locusts, which have no king, And they all come out in bands;
28 The spider that you catch with your hand, And it is in king’s palaces.
29 There are three things that walk beautifully, And the fourth walks very well:
30 The lion, strong among all animals, Who does not turn back for anything;
31 The girding of the loins; likewise the goat; And the king, whom no one resists.
32 If you have foolishly sought to exalt yourself, Or if you have planned to do evil, Put your finger over your mouth.
33 Surely he who churns milk will draw butter, And he who blows his nose will draw blood; And he who provokes anger will cause strife.
1 Words of King Lemuel; the prophecy with which his mother taught him.
2 What, my son? and what, son of my womb? And what, son of my desires?
3 Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to what destroys kings.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor strong drink for princes;
5 Lest by drinking they forget the law, And pervert the right of all the afflicted.
6 Give strong drink to the faint, And wine to the bitter in spirit.
7 Drink, and forget his need, And remember his misery no more.
8 Open your mouth for the mute In the judgment of all the helpless.
9 Open your mouth, judge justly, and defend the cause of the poor and needy. Praise of the virtuous woman
10 Virtuous woman, who will find her? Because its esteem far surpasses that of precious stones.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And she will not lack gain.
12 From her she gives him good and not evil All the days of her life.
13 She looks for wool and linen, And she works with her hands with her will.
14 She is like a merchant’s ship; She brings her bread from afar.
15 She gets up even at night And gives food to her family And ration to her maids.
16 She considers her inheritance, and buys it, And plants a vineyard of the fruit of her hands.
17 She girds her loins with strength, And strengthens her arms.
18 He sees that her business is going well; Her lamp doesn’t go out at night.
19 She applies her hand to the spindle, And her hands to the spinning wheel.
20 She stretches out her hand to the poor, And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her family, For all her family is clothed in double garments.
22 She makes herself tapestries; Her dress is made of fine purple linen.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits with the elders of the land.
24 She makes cloth, and sells, And gives ribbons to the merchant.
25 Strength and honor are her clothing; And she laughs at what is to come.
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, And the law of mercy is on her tongue.
27 She considers the ways of her house, And she does not eat bread for nothing.
28 Her children rise up from her and call her blessed; And her husband also praises her:
29 Many women did good; But you surpass them all.
30 Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; The woman who fears the Lord, she will be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let them praise her in her gates.
